    what I don't get about this is it feels like he's doing more work making the fake piece than if he really made it...

    Making a tenon look like that is actually quite laborious. I estimate about seven cuts and angle adjustments needed per leg. And even then, it might not be perfect.

    fair enough, I've done woodworking but never gotten far enough to do things like that
