Chem professor asks "what's the melting point of water"...

Class is legitimately silent for 5 seconds. A few whispers emerge trying to work out the answer.

This is Chem I, guys... Step up to the plate.

I heard a couple of Ti-84's come out. That's all I will say.

Actually, someone responded with a questionable "zero celsius" and the professor went "no, come on, it's not a trick question".

    ?

Judging by what was written, no one said anything..

Humanity needs a strong generation to lead its charge.

Unfortunately, this generation was stopped by the "melting point of water".

Water doesn't melt, but ice does...

Thank you for giving an idea what to ask my incoming students this summer for their exam.

I don't think it translates well as a written question though.

apparently i've been away from chemistry for too long, I'm not getting the problem with the question

It forces you to think about water differently. "Ice" in chemistry is just solid water. There's no point in saying "ice" since only the state changes.

Freezing point of a liquid is the melting point of the solid. The problem wasn't the answer itself, but how it was answered. If you have an answer that you're unsure of, you aren't researching or thinking enough.

ah ok so it was the wording, got it now
