Hi,
i recently found this big flowchart for troubleshooting pc problems. Might be helpful for some of you

while i feel that this one is indeed quite edgy, if you think what searches this one is gonna pop up in, it may make some silly kind of sense:
every time someone goes to google for ways to save battery life, they're spammed with all kinds of articles and videos just saying shit without properly testing it, and then there's the LTT video with some *actual* results.
and in some way.. including his completely silly "baseline", he's not wrong about the tripling
"that dude" in class who always brings his shitpad pro and then hooks up his gaming peripherals to it to type obnoxiously loud in the middle of class.
and yes, i know several of those people.

This is probably the most realistic use case. As far as the title of the video goes, it probably makes sense to assume that this is intended for people who aren't smart with their battery usage enough to do this. IMO a shortened version of this could be made into a techquickie video instead.
Btw do you figure a wireless USB mouse would use more battery life than a wired (RGB) mouse?

it'd just be nice if more people would look at things other people do and think "why did this person do this" instead of thinking "how can i twist this to make it offensive to me" a tad more often.

if you are going to make a claim about tripling battery life, it should be compared to REAL WORLD usage, when you say cars get better gas mileage on the highway you assume reasonable driving not driving 100 MPH pedal to the metal the whole time. I get this is the "extreme scenario" of worst case to best case, but the fact is basically no one is doing the worst case scenario so it's not a good metric and skews the improvement results sorta like how when Paul's Hardware does a dollars per frame to show what is the best bang for the buck on video cards (comparing like a RX480 to a 1080ti) but then uses FPS numbers that are limited by the game engine on 1080p with a 1080ti, the frame limits of the game engines at lower resolutions skews the average FPS per dollar to be much lower then it would be played at ever, making the RX480 appear to be a better value when looked at from a frames per dollar number, when it could actually be much different if you eliminated any results that where frame limited by the game engine. Basically it's a questioning of the methodology of the tests leading to unrealistic results.

it is clickbait when the title or thumbnail is not what is in the video, did he or did he not (within margin) triple battery life, however unrealistic his "baseline" was?

Putting aside who uses a keyboard on battery or not, For me this is like the 4th video I'm not even going to bother clicking on, where I used to watch all of them and excited for a new one. and yes the title does have something to do with it but more so I just couldn't be bothered to have battery saving explained or other base level tech things, or hell see another how to build a computer, Where are the Case reviews, fun project builds or really cool ideas and making it work.
Really sad but hey at least we have jays2c, Bitwit and Canucks.
Say what you want about Jay but at least as his channel has grown he has actually gotten more personal and cares about his content.

I wish they'll discuss this topic on the WAN show and maybe do a strawpoll to see what most viewers actually think.

WAN show strawpoll isnt most viewers tho, strawpolls often end up being the most vocal (toxic?) minority.
and i'm sure that if people are actually that pissed off about this video as some make out to be, their unsubs and dislikes will drive that point in a more statistical way than a percentage on a strawpoll.

Must be a typo. Tesla P100 is actually only 5.3 TERAflops in DP. They might be referring to something like the DGX-1 boxes which have 8 P100s (42 Tflops DP). Maybe they have a unit with two P100s + a CPU which adds up to the 12.2 Tflops. If the whole computer is 47 petaflops then there is likely somewhere around 8,800 P100s (ignoring CPUs, probably less once you account for those).

squid4fl reacted to patrickjp93 in Zen Engineering Samples, Specs Spotted
http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/ams-zen-engineering-sample-specs-leaked.html
To start, keep in mind these are A0 engineering samples. Cache sizes, clock speed, and TDP can all change between now and retail launch.
Sample CPUs with 4, 8, 24, and 32 cores have been spotted making the rounds. Of these, only the 4 and 8C variants were made for the AM4 socket.
The 4-core variant is limited to 8MB of L3 cache and holds a 65W TDP at clock speeds of 2.8GHz base to 3.2GHz boost.
The 8-core has 16MB of L3 cache and holds a 95W TDP with the same clock speeds.
Further, AMD has chosen to double the size of its L2 cache over Intel's offerings, at 512KB. Knowing that cache timings get larger in proportion to the cache size, this is intriguing. We'll have to come up with some cache-thrashing benchmarks to see whose solution is better.
The most interesting part of the article imho states that the 4 and 8-core chips idle at 550MHz and consume just 2.5 and 5W respectively. This is in stark contrast to the FX series where, at idle, an 8350 still consumes almost 30W of power.
The 24 and 32-core chips have 160 and 180W TDPs at 2.75 and 2.9GHz boost, with a 2x32MB L3 cache configuration. Idle speed for these chips is even lower at 400MHz, not that it matters since big iron server chips should NEVER be idling. Remember this is a 2-die solution, so there will be a price to pay in terms of cache coherency, but it's still quite impressive. It's not stated if the boost clock is for all cores or just one, though based on the TDP scaling of the smaller counterparts, I'm going to guess it's single-core only.
Opinion:
I suspect AMD will be fudging its TDP just a bit or have lower cache clock speeds to keep its TDPs under Intel's, but so far this is right around what I expected for clock speeds. Had AMD been able to pull off the speeds Bulldozer and Vishera enjoyed AND stay inside a healthy 95W while being performance-competitive core for core with Intel, I must admit I'd have to give AMD very high praise.
Remember, these are A0 samples, so there's room for clocks to tick upward just a bit, which is why I say clock speeds will likely come right in line with Haswell-E.
Edit: You guys are getting slow or lazy. In 24 hours I'm the one posting all the Intel and AMD news even though the articles were up hours before I found them.

squid4fl reacted to PCgamer324 in Are Mac computers really that bad?
I have 10 systems (mostly linux) and I love my macbook for systems administration / programming.
Why?
1. I'm a CPU poweruser. Macbook Pro's have competitive CPU's that don't throttle like the older models did.
2. I hate plastic laptops. Laptops run hot. Plastic degrades under heat. I don't want to spend 2k on something that will crack and peal in 2 years. (I'm looking at you G@m3r laptops)
3. My battery won't die in 4 hours.
4. If OSX can't get the job done, multiboot will
