  1. Hello, I recently got a free dell OptiPlex 780 of my dad’s work. It currently runs a core 2 duo E8400, 4 GB of ram, an ATI 3450 GPU and two 320 GB 2,5inch Toshiba laptop hard drives in raid 0. I am planning to use this machine as a triple boot hackintosh, Windows and Linux rig, I will probably not do any gaming on the OptiPlex unless I decide to upgrade the GPU. I will probably upgrade the ram to something like 8 GB or 12 GB or even 16 GB if I can get some for free from my uncle (which seems to be the case). I found a few deals for core 2 quads, as I would like to upgrade the CPU on this machine. Q8200 for 300 NOK (39 USD) Q6600 for 350 NOK (45 USD) Q9500 for 420 NOK (54 USD) The OptiPlex currently has the dell stock aluminium 65watt cooler which stays at about 53-55 celcius at max load. Are these deals any good and will the CPUs even work with my OptiPlex? Will I need to upgrade my cooler to the dell copper cooler or will the aluminum cooler be fine? I live in Norway so I will only buy from sellers in Norway. The OptiPlex has the Q45 chipset. Dells technical guidebook
  2. You might also want to consider disabling CPU cores. You can do this by running msconfig, going to the startup tab (or something like that) and clicking advanced. There you will get options to disable cores and RAM. I wouldn't reccomend disabling RAM though, as it doesn't use a lot of power.
  3. Yes, i am using a theme in the screenshot and i have tried with the stock theme and in safe mode as well, without any luck. I know that the technical preview is going to be unstable, but I like taking risks. I have been running just fine without explorer.exe for two days now, without any problems. Ive found a backup that I'll try stealing a few system files to get explorer.exe up and running again.
  4. I have been running windows 10 technical preview on my Dell laptop just fine for quite a while now, but when this morning many things went wrong. I was restarting by pc as i was having some problems with the start menu not displaying by pinned tiles correctly. I restarted my pc and the start menu refused to open and the taskbar was dead (see-attached screen shot). The notifications area was also dead; with only the clock popping up if, I pressed an icon that was not there. Because of this, I have not been able to use explorer.exe, so I have been stuck to using CMD and 7-zip for file management, and multitasking without a taskbar has been a horrible mess. I installed a copy of windows 10 on a virtual machine, and the same problem occurred...? I have tried replacing explorer.exe with the explorer.exe from that VM, but with no luck, I reverted to the original one. I have tried using this guide: https://www.techmesto.com/fix-start-menu-broken-windows-10-technical-preview/ However, it did not provide any solution that worked for me. I have also noticed that explorer.exe is hogging about 50% of my CPU. General specs of the laptop: Dell Vostro 1510 Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 4GB DDR2 RAM 320 WD Scorpio black HDD Integrated Intel GMA X3100 Any help would be highly appreciated, as this laptop is my main workhorse at school.
