  1. Tried it off my laptop wireless and got 75mbps, I'll try reinstalling the drivers and see if that makes a difference. As for powerline I have considered this before but doesn't it only work when the power is all linked onto the same mains line? I've no idea how my home is setup so if so it could work, but also could not.
  2. Sorry to not quote replies but I'm out the house atm so on my phone. In order of replies I usually get 2 occasionally 3 networks showing. I live in a semi detached with little interference usually. As for using a long Ethernet it's not really viable due to the layout of my home And I definitely had full 4 bar when I conducted the test. It is intermittent between 3 and 4 but mostly full connection. Unsure of the speed however so will check again once home. Once there I will also try @Broseephus suggestion. Only other thing I can think of but as far as I'm aware they are separate frequencies is on my pc I use a vengeance 2100 wireless headset. Could that cause network interference? I would of thought they are operating on completely different channels.
  3. So my current internet speed is 150mbps down, 10mbps upload, now for weeks I thought the connection was faulty because I have had no more than 20 down on the same PC/ Wireless dongle that I used to get 50mbps down with my old provider. So I tested the speed via ethernet today with my laptop connected straight to the router and I got 100mbps. It's not 150 but it will do, however when I still tried the same speed test to the same server less than 2 mins later back over my wireless PC, I only get 14mbps. The PC is situated 1 floor above the router, ignoring the fact there is a solid floor in the way its a bout 14-16 feet away. I used the same router and dongle with my old connection which was 50 down, 3 up and that got 45-50mbps consistently. I've checked the specs of my USB dongle and it shouldn't have an issue handling such speeds. If anyone has any solution or possible causes for this then I'd love to hear them. Below i've linked a couple images from the speed test to show the variance and also a link to the USB I use for my wireless. Thank you for your help Speedtest 1 Speed test 2 USB Dongle
  4. sorry I mentioned 4k in the original post but I think it sounded like i was looking for something that would support 4k. This is by no means the case. There is zero intent to use this card for 4k.
  5. I've been reading through all of the arguments and for 1080p the 970 is minuscule margins better and more power efficient. However due to the price drops and potential 4k lifespan, 290x are apparently the recommended choice. But I have also seen people saying "only this 290x because the others have heat issues.." or only "X" branded 290x because the others suck. So now I'm looking for help on picking for example, the top 5 290x's because from the little research I have done, you pick them up as cheap as £265 or as expensive as £300 (apparently £400 original? lol) thanks for any help and clarity you can provide between a good and bad 290x. EDIT: Sorry I should have been more clear, I am not looking for future proof and have no intention of going 4k with the card I buy. I'm basically just asking what should I be looking for when buying a 290x.
  6. Im stuck in this debate myself. I currently have a 660 and with no intention of going above 1080p I was even tempted by a 960. However whilst I feel the futurproof of that card is drastically dim, I upped my expectations to a 970 and just before dropping the the bomb on the buy button, RAMgate and now I have no idea. I like the look of the 970 for DSR and MFAA however despite knowing the 3.5gb will more than likely be enough for 1080, I feel like the price difference should push me towards a 290x. I have no intention to OC really and whilst my heart lies with nvidia (only ever bought nvid, my head says 290X.."
  7. I am from the UK so the provider I'll be going with is Vodafone which I may be wrong in saying is closely linked but not owned by Verizon so in terms of what does the carrier offer, it's a pretty full collection of current smart phones. As for what I aim to get out of a phone, I would class myself a power user but im by no means a basic emails and text kinda guy either. The rails iphone has put me on over last 2 years ultimately just turned me into a basic user as there is not much more that can be done with them without burning through the battery within an hour. So I'd want my new phone for all the basics, games, email, net browsing and music with good looking design, not overly huge, I know the originally mentioned S5 is quite large so I wouldn't want to go anything above that kind of form factor. Ideally I would also like a micro SD expansion, 1080p screen and a high spec camera. Hope this is enough extra info and thank you for your reply. Im working until so that will be the next opportunity I get to go and upgrade so I got few days to look over all the options. Thank you for your reply and for going into so much depth with the explanation. With your help and also the other comments I have ultimately decided the S5 is now off the table seen as I don't think it had one positive reply in its favour haha so now I still have few days to look over the alternatives that have been listed. As I live in the UK i'm not sure that the oneplusone can be a suitable option due to the whole invite process but also if it can only be obtained on T-mobile then thats off the table too because T-mobile sucks over here. But I'll go away now and review my options and get back to you with any more questions seen as yourself (and everyone else here) seems much more upto scratch on smartphones than me but again thanks for the time taken on your response and I'm sure I'll check back in with my decision to see if that forum approves or maybe with a final 3 options that you guys can help me compare!
  8. So I've mainly been considering the galaxy S5, I've read reviews and it seems pretty hit and miss between people saying its good and people saying its bad and poor build quality, etc.. Now for effectively same price as what I'll end up paying for a S5 I could choose pretty much any other smartphone excluding the 6+. After using iOS now for 2 years I think it's time I said goodbye, as I am sure many of your are similar, as a PC user been locked into a basic OS with very little customization, very strict rails on what can or cannot be installed (emulators) and overall just catering the device to myself I think android is definitely the way to go. I have seen often on websites, reddit and tech vids of android users with completely overhauled mobile themes, the most common ones usually pipboy style from fallout. I was wondering how easy these things are to do as it is this kind of customization that really pushes me in the direction of android. Also has anyone had any personal issues with the S5 and if so a possible recommendation instead of? I really edge towards the S5 as prior to my iphone I had countless samsung phones before to the smartphone era that I absolutely adored and all worked fantastically. From the e250, g600, tocco and to this day the best looking phone ever IMO, the u600. So thanks for any replies and any light you can shed on my sitatuion
  9. So long story short, I'm currently running on Windows 8 as I got it for super cheap last year when I built my PC and the more I saved on OS meant the more I could spend on hardware, however I'm sure we now all know how awful W8 really is. So I recently took a spare HDD I had lying around from an old store bought PC I had that I wanted to fully format, unpartition and use for a completely fresh Windows 7 install that I can then mirror onto my SSD that I'll pick up in post xmas sales. So what do I need help with, well I need to find the best program for completely wiping the HDD I wish to use and also I Just need to know then the best way of moving all my needed files from my current windows 8 HDD to the new drive? As far as I am aware I think I'm planning all this in the simplest and most straightforward way or is there anything I have overlooked or could do to make things easier? I appreciate any help you can throw my way
  10. anyone know if either of these would be okay to use? its the only product that is available in my closest store despite im already traveling quite far to get them http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/servisol-electronic-cleaning-solvent-200ml-re70m or http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/isopropanol-cleaning-wipes-n08an thanks btw i read over the comments on the cleaning solvent and it apparently is safe to use for paste removal but always best to get second opinions
  11. Is a bit of white spirit on paper towel okay if it won't come off with just a paper towel/ cotton bud?
  12. In the UK isopropyl alcohol is not as easily available as other countries and requires a prescription to buy from a pharmacy. The only store I can find that stocks it is in aerosol form and also closest store to me is few towns over. Are there any other spirits that work just as well and can be purchased from normal hardware or supermarkets? Thanks!
