  1. I wouldn't upgrade from any i7 that is not a few generations old already, and chances are even as a multimedia processing user, you might not find much significant difference to be felt with the newest Ryzen, give it time and see how it all turns out... You already have a great CPU, now put it to use! haha
  2. I have a similar VPS setup and now I'm trying to better hide the OpenVPN traffic. According to this guide, port forwarding to port 443 is sufficient, since it makes it go through SSL: http://vpnpick.com/hide-openvpn-tunnels-traffic/ Is this a correct assumption? The only other options are using software, one of which needs to be installed on both ends, and since I don't have access to the VPS, I need a solution that only needs to be configured on the client.
  3. I'm not sure that this is the best forum to ask. I speak from experience, I have been mining profitably since 2016, and that was already 'very late to the game'. The truth is mining is bigger than ever, home mining has indeed made a resurgence, and home miners are currently on the edge waiting for vega 10 release to see how those gpus will perform. I'm happy to answer any of your questions and suggest some forums for you to visit and learn better, just PM me. But before even considering it, and I get you say it's just an experiment, but you should still be aware of your electrical costs, electrical circuit needs, space needs, investment required, and heat management in summer vs winter.
  4. This type of stuff does happen, I don't remember the last time I actually got a 'steal' or highly discounted deal on ebay but that's usually because of deman. Sellers can't constantly end auctions early and claim mistakes or the account eventually gets locked. I think there's also a time limit, if someone has bid on it and there are less than 12 hours left, the auction has to remain unless item is reported "lost or broken", So there are loop holes but if an account abuses of them, they eventually loose their ability to sell on that username, and still have to pay fees. One of the worst things sellers do is have multiple accounts to bid on their own junk, or have friends bid on their items so they don't go too low..
  5. This !! - Tunnelbear was going to be my suggestion as well. For very limited use, sure, but if you need a daily VPN, there are enough low cost options that are worth it.
  6. Coincidentally, I was watching Wallpaper Engine tutorials on youtube just last week! So yea, that's where you can find some. There's also some guides to be found under the Steam page. I never got around to it, but was for a simple birthday wallpaper idea I thought of doing..
  7. Pretty much but if you get no clicks on ads than something is wrong, no clicks on ads from 10k traffic = not real traffic.. even with adblock users. To check average PPC cost simply use google adsense tool for the terms on which you get highest traffic One last thing to keep in mind is the country of origin, for example US has high click payout prices vs many other places. Some places pay much lower per click such as India which can generate just pennies over the dollar when traffic is from a different country.
  8. Mining is not completely dead at all. More alive than ever like humbs just said, but at the same time it means it's larger than ever, but that's not a bad thing. The RX 460 can mine at a bit less than half the rate of an RX 470, that can equate to anywhere from .30 to .60 cents profit a day depending on what your electrical costs are. It's almost not worth it, but yes it can still be done in 2017. RX 470's and 480's are still currently the sweet spot GPUs for mining altcoins or selling hashrate for bitcoins. You also have to consider if you will hold onto the coins you mine or sell them right away. Value can appreciate, or depreciate just like any other market.
  9. I no longer really have a 'job' as much as I now do more jobs than I can count. I chose to start my own online business and succeeded for the most part. Similar but different to Linus, I run a small online media and content creation company. I've also recently started investing in both cryptocurrency and mining. As well as broadening my stock market portfolio with some supplemental day trading. I've worked many jobs, from hard labor and construction, to digital and online based companies. My last job was at a large telecommunications provider as a tech support agent for business internet and phone lines. I have a couple of uncompleted classes to get my full electromechanic diploma, but by now I have forgotten most of it.
  10. You have a few different fields worth of questions in there, I will try to answer some. I am not familiar with lower end 1080p webcams for video content creation, but I have been told many basic models do the job.. For streaming on Twitch, I chose to have a secondary PC with mid-range GPU handle it. It seems to be the go to solution vs. capture cards, but others might be able to chime in a bit more on this. For registering against not registering, this really depends on your current income, and how much income your new business will make. I highly suggest you speak to your accountant, explain what your plans are, and even without any possible income projections, the accountant should be able to advise you to register an LLC or operate as self-employed to start. Accountants and lawyers are also the only ones well placed to properly advise you on what registrations you need to file for your state, and business operations. Registering a business will have varied effects on how your income tax is reported. Since this is a side hustle, and you plan to keep your day job, eventually it is much better to keep the two split. Once you start making a good chunk of money with your online content, it's most certainly time to register and treat it as a separate entity. Tax numbers are usually used to get tax refunds on purchases made for your business. Say you buy computer parts for a build, you can get the tax refunded in most cases since you're an operating business. I can't give you more direct advice since I'm in Canada, and tax systems can vary greatly.
  11. It really depends on the targeted traffic. You can check what the average price per click is for all the terms you get traffic for to give you an idea, but it's much easier just to put it into practice and see what the site earns. Nowadays it is not much anymore, usually enough to cover the upkeep of a site, all depending on the amount of traffic, 10-15k daily unique organic visitors should cover all expenses and some, but beware, if you buy traffic you're likely to make nothing, and get banned from adsense
  12. So many, video games in general remind me of my childhood. Starting with a hand me down Atari 2600, classic titles assorted. Mario Bros. Contra Metroid Zelda Roger Rabbit Earthbound SNES Simicty 2000 Chrono trigger Top Gear series and Rock n Roll Racing
  13. I got one of the phantom glass protectors for my phone while Linus had them on sponsor spots. So far I'm happy, two cracks on the edges of the protector after a few drops, screen is fine. If your phone isn't cheap, I think it's a worthy investment.
  14. IMHO - Not worth trying to figure out how to migrate an image of Windows 8. PROBLEM #1: He needs to buy Windows 10 - The free upgrade period ended July 29, 2016: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/12435/windows-10-upgrade-faq Regardless if he decides to buy it or not, a fresh install on the SSD is still preferable vs. trying to troubleshoot whatever software is being used. Backup all important data, and re-install software and apps as needed. If he decides not to buy Windows 10, you can download the install disc image for Windows 8 directly from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows8 Once the system is fully setup with all updates applied, now is a good time to make an image of the SSD OS install, and in the future, it can easily be cloned onto another SSD or HDD without having to re-install everything again. A great way to start 2017 if you ask me
  15. As long as you don't overclock, an aftermarket cooler is not a necessity. Turbo mode on the FX6300 has two levelsif I remember correctly, and using the highest one will require a better cooler. If you can get an aftermarket cooler for $20-$40 USD max, I would go for it. I built an FX6300 for my nephew already a few years back, and my first complaint was noise That thing is loud. Plus a cheap aftermarket cooler will still perform considerably better than any stock cooling solution, But no need to go crazy.
