WaitForMeImOnDialUp got a reaction from aisle9 in Another one of these threads...Xeon or i7 for my needs? Sorry
if you dont care about overclocking get the xeon. they are server grade and made to run 24/7 for years. so if you are on your pc alot then its a good move. it could push two titan-x's  so its more than enough for your gtx 960. the single thread performance is still pretty high on those.

the xeon is awesome the only reason to get a 4790k over one is just for the ability to overclock later down the road when its needed(if its even needed) and epeen (bragging rights),but more than likely when that time comes there will be something way better available anyways and be a good time to upgrade

personally...i would get the 4790k, for peace of mind and the fact i have huge epeen

I just want to point out - AMD have roughly 50% more instructions per clock so 1MHz on an AMD card is about 1.5MHz on an Nvidia competitor - roughly.

Clock per clock they will perform similar but good luck getting the memory on the 290x to 1500mhz without an increase in voltage and temp. Higher memory clock in 390/390x is pretty important because it slightly decrease latency thus improve some overhead.

According to The Stilt, memory on 290s with Hynix/Elpida mostly won't go past 1450mhz without producing ECC error and it's not something you can monitor.

AMD already merged their 390s and 290s driver so there's no exclusivity in driver improvement.
Not really worth it to flash 390x BIOS into 290x.

I just like to add - 1 MHz for AMD means more than 1 MHz for Nvidia - so while Nvidia OC better - they gain less

if you liquid cool and overclock i say 290x as it performs exactly the same as 390x clock for clock.  i went thru this same thing going to buy either 390 or 290x but i did buy used so i saved over 100 bucks on the 290x and get better performance. if buying new id say 390 if they cost the same.

after driver 15.7 the tessalation difference between 200 series and 300 series was equaled...a 390 is a overclocked 290 with more vram..thats it.

lol i have the 4770K myself, and, to be brutaly honest if you're not on a workstation rendering 4K porn videos all day long there is ABSOLUTELY no reasons to get something better...even 980ti in SLI perform the same on a 4770K or 5820K. 8 threads is PLENTY for games, most of them code only make good use of 3 or 4 main heavy threads the rest is shit and giggles.

IMHO yes it is...get yourself a cheap X99 board, i7-5820K and some quad channel kit of cheap DDR4 ram...sell your uber expensive AMD KIT online...you will see your performance in games and what not being drasticaly improved...an overclocked FX will limit the performance of even a single 290X in games...let alone two of them in crossfire (don't believe me? monitor your GPU loads while gaming with GPU-Z or afterburner and see for yourself your current setup IS NOT adequate for such a powerful graphics solution.)

bargain X99 kit as of today's pricing:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
    CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($378.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Motherboard: ASRock X99 Extreme3 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($156.98 @ Newegg)
    Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($104.95 @ B&H)

You can probably get 200$+ for your FX + expensive board + DDR3 ram...place an add and be patient.

this is a good deal! the 5820k is right up there in terms of speed and its 6 cores and 12 threads plus overclocks like a boss.

I guess the 6700K might get a slight edge in games if you compare the two at stock frequency. Other than that, a decent Z170 board is not much cheaper than a decent X99 one, so the 5820K is a better bang for buck.

The Xeon 1231 v3 is basically a haswell i7 without an iGPU. It performs the same at the same clockspeeds as other i7s in the haswell family. If other i7s are at a higher clockspeed, then fine. However if the OP isn't going to OC or use Quicksync, then it's not a bad chip to acquire.

pxx series, eg, p35 / p45 chipset. x38 / x48 chipset. Not G31/G41. Qxxx series can but many have locked bios from OEM vendors such as HP/Dell/Compaq.

    Heyyo,
    Watch this tbh:

They're both so damn close... just get whichever is cheaper with a non-reference cooler tbh.
For example... in Canada? NVIDIA GTX 970 with non-reference cooler is cheaper right meow:
    http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/overall-list/#c=186,311&sort=a8&page=1
In the States? Surprisingly same thing, NVIDIA GTX 970 is cheaper with a non-reference cooler:

But that changes day-to-day depending on sales...
