  1. I just built a new silence optimized system, but put my old power supply in it. Now it is by far the loudest thing in there and I want to replace it with something that will be very quiet even under load. Here is the build: CPU: i7 5820k overclocked GPU: EVGA GTX 680 CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i SATA: 2 SSDs MB: Asus x99A About 600 watts under full load if we're being generous. Let me know if you think that is too much. So what I'm looking for is a powersupply that can put out a reasonable amount of power 300-400 watts while being very quiet and when it gets pushed to full load is still fairly quiet. I'm completely clueless what to go for as I have no experience with buying powersupplies. Cheers
  2. For me here in Germany ULNs cost the exact same as PWNs. Are you really able to get the same behaviour out of PWNs with the right curve? I thought ULNs were especially optimized for low RPMs. If they are indeed able to go that low and be just as quiet as the ULNs, then one obvious advantage of the PWNs would be that they are a lot more flexible.
  3. Okay cool. That is good to know. Thanks.
  4. I'm building a new system in a Define R5 and I want to fill it with noctua fans. 2 for the front. 2 for the cpu cooler mounted at the top and potentially another for the back. I'm looking to optimize for a very low noise level. There are 3 main types of noctua 140mm fans: ULN: 3-pin, 800/650rpm FLX: 3-pin, 1200/1050/900rpm PWM: 4-pin PWM, 1500/1200rpm max So looking at that the ULN is probably the right choice when it comes to keeping it quiet, but I'm worried that it might provide insufficient cooling. Is that concern warranted? Should I go for the FLX ones instead? And how much louder are they? Alternatively there is also the redux 900rpm version. Is the redux line worth a look? Thanks! -Leo
  5. The h100i looks great and is barely more expensive. Thanks for the good tip, and the reassurance on the other parts. Also thanks to you for the tip on the h100i. Unfortunately I can't use the cheaper corsair vengeance RAM, because the motherboard only supports DDR4.
  6. Hey my favourite Tech Forum, I'm replacing my at this point unreliable and slowly dying workstation from 2009, have a pretty good idea of what I want but just wanted to run it by you guys to make sure I'm not making any bad decisions. Here is the list of the components: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/j92Mxr Components I already have that will be transitioned into the new workstation: GPU: GTX 680 Recent Powersupply from BeQuiet. SSD: 1TB 840 Evo My work mostly consist of doing 3D simulations and rendering. I consistently max out both the 8 threads of my old nehalem i7 920 and the 24gigs of RAM I have in there. So I'm replacing the machine not just for stability reasons, but also to get better performance. The things I'm the least sure about in the list of new components are the motherboard and the cooler. I appreciate any thoughts you guys might have. Thanks.

  8. My favourite things about the LG G3 are the fact that we now finally have a high build quality smartphone with a removable battery and the split-screen multiapp functionality!
  9. I'm currently on the HTC One X and this one has me seriously interested in finally updating.
  10. There is a bios update and it tones the fan noise down significantly while still maintaining decent temperatures. 1 hour in Planetside 2 on ultra and I'm getting temperatures of around 60-65. I'm probably not going to send it back now, unless anyone else can make a better value-suggestion. If you stumble upon this thread looking for a fix to the fan-issue, here is how: Go into the update manager which if it isn't already installed, you can download from the gigabyte site, and select the 305 bios update. The laptop will restart a couple of times and that's all you need to do. I hope this helps.
  11. I'm looking for a gaming laptop (NVIDIA 760M or higher) with a close to ultrabook form factor. I bought the Gigabyte P34G as reviewed by Linus here: But the fans are excruciatingly loud and I had to send it back. I'm a little disappointed at linus for not mentioning this massive flaw. Maybe his sample was better. Here is a video by Dave Dugdale who experienced the same problem with his P34G and also sent it back: The budget is around that of the Gigabyte but we can go about $250 higher. I'm pretty up to date on laptops right now and there just doesn't seem to be a competitive alternative to the P34G. Please tell me that I'm wrong. Thanks so much LinusTechTippers!
  12. Hey, my friend just bought this laptop: http://www.alternate.de/GIGABYTE/P34G,_Notebook/html/product/1102294/? As reviewed by linus here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcQMINo2QOE He also purchased this SSD: http://www.alternate.de/Mushkin/Atlas_Deluxe_SSD_120_GB/html/product/990331/? and this RAM with it: http://www.alternate.de/Crucial/SO-DIMM_8_GB_DDR3-1600,_Arbeitsspeicher/html/product/1004791/? I'm going to be installing those components in there and also installing windows on it. I have no experience with installing MSATA SSDs. Is there anything I need to look out for? Also while I'm asking, any thoughts on installing optimus and such on the system?
  13. Modern gaming laptops in the 1200-1500 range can all run DCCs just fine. I don't know why everybody is giving you such wrong information here. I mean yes, a laptop probably won't be able to handle scenes with 100million+ polys in it and you wouldn't really want to do any dense simulations or complex renders on a mobile cpu, but for normal modelling, animation, basic simulation and simple renderings it will be just fine. Up to 2009 I was doing this sort of stuff with a GeforceGX something and a Pentium 4, which were definitely a lot less powerful than what is in most current gaming laptops. Even my 800€ Asus from 4 years ago runs softimage (a maya alternative) okayish. I'm a software developer for 3D simulation plugins (site for reference), so I'm not just talking out of my ass here. The Gigabyte P34G would be an excellent choice I think and it comes in at about 1400 dollars in a good configuration. Here is Linus' review of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcQMINo2QOE If you are looking for more of a budget option and are willing to live with less fps and a much worse screen, then the Lenovo Y410p that costs about 780 dollars is a good choice. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/?AID=10383968&PID=3332167&SID=u00000626&CJURL=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.lenovo.com%2Fus%2Fen%2Flaptops%2Fideapad%2Fy-series%2Fy410p%2F&PUBNAME=Kristopher+Kubicki&NID=CJ I hope this helps.
  14. They don't have smartphones and having to go to the desktop computer every time they want to look at something new isn't really an option. Unless I'm understanding the functionality of chromecast wrong it is not really for them. Chromecast is more something I would use. Thanks for the suggestion though guys.
  15. Hey, my in-laws are looking to buy a new tv. They want a smart tv but are not willing to shell out more than a measly $500. It would also have to be LCD as it will stand in a very bright room. I'm having a hard time even finding such a thing, let alone finding one that actually seems good. Do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks!
