OPSJono reacted to 8tg in Workstation laptop recommendations (UK, sub £2000)
The P15 or Dell Precision spec equivalent is honestly probably the best choice for a new mobile workstation in that price range, unless you can buy used.
If your company is footing the bill i imagine they don’t want to buy from eBay or Amazon but check like Lenovo’s refurbished stuff because you can probably find a decked out P53 for around that price. It’s worth jumping back a generation to spend the saved money on overall better performance.
For an example of how far that goes, my skylake/maxwell P50 cost me 540$ with the 1080p panel, 16gb of ram, 250gb nvme ssd, Quadro m2000m and Xeon e3 1505m v5.
Now that’s not godly compared to modern P series, but for 540$ it’s amazing. Rest of my budget went to 64gb of ram and dual 1tb nvme crucial p5’s.
Same deal applies to newer but still refurbished or used thinkpads, a refurb P53 is going to be a lot cheaper and you’d likely get a lot more with the 2000 britbux than you would with a 2000 pound P15, compare your options on that front.

But otherwise tldr still, yeah the P15 or equivalent 15” workstation is likely the best choice.

As for the monitor question I honestly couldn’t say for certain if a DisplayPort splitter will work over usb c, I know it gets 2 DisplayPort lanes, but it may only want a usb C dock in order to do that. I would personally just get a Lenovo usb C dock to be certain.

Yep, you can take the feet off the node 202.

They're just stuck on with a bit of glue.

Node 202 is a great small case.

It can get a bit warm/loud though depending on what you're doing with it.
(I'm comparing to full size (Define R4) cases though)

I've got a node 202 and using the PSU it came with.

It blew up and killed my GPU within a month of turning it on.

However, they replaced it and bought a new GPU for me for free.

And it's been working for about 3 years without any problems now.

Overall I'd recommend it. - Having one blow was probably just highly unlucky for me.

Small sample sizes and all that.

What a pointless and idiotic comment. I thought trolling was against the rules on this forum.

    1) Nobody says that open source software is impenetrable and has perfect security. What people are saying, and which is true, is that open source software is easier to examine and test by third parties which often results in issues being founds and fixed. That is unlike closed source software where companies are often not interested in fixing issues and would rather just let internally known security holes remain untouched in the hopes that nobody else finds them.

    2) Closed source programs have had similar vulnerabilities in the past. Here is one in Windows from 2015 which worked in a very similar way.

    3) People are correct when they say that people examine open source code in ways they don't with closed source code. That does not guarantee that every single potential exploit will be discovered though.

I've got two K75's (one RGB, one Red LED) - both brown switches.

    Both excellent. Highly recommend.

One small note on the RGB version, if you plan to use Linux, avoid the RGB model as the keyboard has trouble working under linux because it's basically all software controlled (and that software isn't really there for linux).

But I have 0 issues with the red-only version on Linux.

-- I've had the keyboard for two and a half years now I think, still can't think of a keyboard I'd rather have.

    Hi guys!

I literally just signed up to the forum for this.

Turning WLAN Autoconfig from Automatic to Manual may lead to no wifi connection!

I found out the hard way.

I followed the guide steps and disabled the services in the list. All was good for a couple weeks. Then I updated Windows 10 and The WiFi wouldn't work. No networks available, not even a menu in the Settings -> Network tab. I blamed Microsoft, Acer, the chip manufacturer, all of them. I spent 1 hour troubleshooting this. Turns out it was my fault.

    Just a heads up!

Could you send me those links? - I'm installing that version today.

Ah yes, I too have made an ISO of Windows with everything pre-disabled.

And as my desktop doesn't have WIFI, and VM's don't either, it all looked perfect.

Until I installed it on a laptop... Wifi card perma-disabled.
Somehow forcing it to enable, still can't see any SSID's (Acting like the wifi card doesn't exist).

Thanks for pointing out exactly what it wrong, saves me from trying to figure it out myself.

For mostly games I'd say the ultra wide.

Just because some games will make use of the extra width you get with a 21:9 monitor.

Whereas with two 16:9 monitors, you can only ever use one as your primary one for games.

    I would add however,

I use a 2560x1440p monitor, with a secondary 1080p one off to the side to hold random stuff.

And I looked up the ultrawide you've mentioned.

I would recommend looking at a 3440x1440 ultra wide.

(I really don't like going back to only 1080p at work, I miss the extra height I get from 1440p).

About £160 more than the one in your title. (https://www.scan.co.uk/products/34-lg-34um68-ultrawide-219-amd-freesync-2560x1080-ips-14ms-2x-7w-speakers-dp-v12-2x-hdmi-v14-black)

Wait hold on, I just looked up the first of the two options you're asking about, and they're both the same resolution?

(Sorry I assumed the 2x monitors were 16:9 as that's usually the common question).

I use two 24" 1080p monitors in work, and for coding/working they're pretty good.

Now I know they're both the same res I'm not so sure on my original recommendation.

I'd probably go for the 2x monitors, more places to put other windows is good (as long as you have the desk space)

    Yeah, I'd get the 2x 25"

The 25" also has 5ms response time much better, compared to the 34" 14ms. (though the 34 has Freesync).

If you feel like getting really nerdy: http://nwavguy.blogspot.dk/

Basically, the hiss can be down to a varity of factors.
It can be down to a high output impedance of the onboard amp or it can be down to interference on the onboard DAC.
Either way, an external audio soluion can help.

You can also try @SSL's guide to removing interferance

Schitt is being used by a lot of people, its just that they're mainly seen as a US only manufacture.
The reason why people recommend Schiit is becuase they usually give the best value for your money.
Personally, I've always been a bit lukewarm on the Schiit Fulla, since the volume knop is less than ideal.

As a web developer, Edge is one of the worst.

Mostly because with Edge, you can't actually have a local site run in Edge.

So you set up a local webserver (which is not on the internet, it would be internal to your network or a virtual machine using Vagrant and virtualbox or something) - And you add a record in the Hosts file to point "local.my.site" to point to the IP of the server.

And every browser can find that website because you specified it in your machines local Hosts.

Edge however, fails to do that.

So making any changes to try and fix bugs for Edge requires the developer to have a "live" website used for just testing Edge, and each code change would require a deploy of the codebase.

EVERYTIME any of the code is changed to see it (at all) in Edge, you have to have a public website.

    As a developer,
    Edge fucking sucks.

    As a user,
I gave it a shot when I switched to windows 10, honestly it wasn't bad. - There was a few little issues, but as it had just been released I let them go. Assuming they would get fixed.

But the thing that made me go back to Chrome was the lack of any real Extensions for Ad Blocking - Debug tools - and Global Twitch emotes.
