I suggest you use something like this for the p2p link:
    http://routerboard.com/RBSXTG-5HPacD

You won't need the router, just use static IP and the the small PC for everything you need.
You will also need a small gigabit switch like:

EDIT: Be sure you have direct line of sight, otherwise you can't use wireless

You could disable 802.11n and ony use g.
    That gives you 54mbps.
Edit: Or use qos, here's a video how to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2rsUDIsx_w

If you read this wiki page http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very-high-bit-rate_digital_subscriber_line_2
you will see that using vdsl2 you can get 200mbps.
Also, it seems that with newer DSL technology you can get 1gbps:

If the connector fits and they are designed for the same frequency than they are compatible.

Is the AT&T U-Verse terrible just on wireless or cable too? If its on cable too than you have to replace it or get another isp.
If cable speed is ok, than cou can connect an AP to it with eth cable and get better wireless.
    Now to answer your questions:
    1. If you want port fwd for a host that is connected to AP, and the AP is connected to router, than you just have to do it on router. Port fwd only works on devices that have NAT activated.
    2. If your new router has the same wireless settings (pass, encription) than you dont have to change anything on the hosts.
Why do you have to change the router often?
    3. Only if they are connected to each other with eth cable or if you use the second as a wifi extender
    4. You can only have nat control on routers. If you use a router as an access point you do not have nat on it, logicly its an AP
    5. Yes, but you have to use the second router as a router, not as an AP.
You have the public IP on 1st router, a private ip class between router 1 and router 2 (ex 192.168.0.0/24).
Hosts connect to router 2 using another private ip class (ex 192.168.1.0/24)
In this case if you want port fwd, you have to do it on bouth routers. Or put the wan ip of router 2 in dmz on router 1 and just do port fwd on router 2.

    Hi all,

I have a desire in sharing and stream my files over my home network. So I did some research and found two options: NAS or setting up my own server machine. I honestly don't know the difference between the two as I am new to the networking stuff. All I want is the machine to do the following:
Perform backups of my existing computers (both Windows and OS X). Store my media using a media server (preferably Plex media server, but I will consider other options). Allow users to stream video files with HD audio (meaning the video files should pass DTS HD and Dolby True HD so my receiver can decode it correctly). Also if you don't mind me asking, what hardware do you guys suggest I should get/look at to do these things? I hope I didn't start a war and/or cause a big problem to a lot of users.

I would like to say thanks in advance to all of you and especially Linus Media Group as they helped me gain knowledge on commonly used computer terms and they helped me build my first overclocked gaming PC. I can't wait to view all the responses as this is my first post!

It is dual band and if 2.4Ghz has interference from other devices, the 5Ghz one is usually free.
