    Update 12: We Have Power.

With the power button mounting completed, its now time to work on the power cable itself. To start off, this is the cable itself.

And as can be seen, its a little bit short.

So, I have to make this a bit longer. In order to do this, I first cut that cable in half.

Also, these cables are really, really really small and a pain to work with.

Anyways, I then started to solder longer wires on to each side of the connector. However I did not have enough hands to do this, so I had to find another way to hold the wire.

And that works. From here I then covered the ends with heat shrink in order to both make everything look better, as well as stopping each different wire from contacting the others. While the soldering may not have been the best, as seen below, considering the size of the wire I am trying to extend I do not feel as though it is that bad.

The wire itself did not turn out that bad either.

Here's another picture with everything attached. The wire is massively over sized now for what it needs to be, but it still works. Now there is one last thing to test, and that is if it still powers up.

    And yes, yes it does.

Its not quite done yet, and the camera's battery decided it wanted to die half way through this part of the build, but I figured I should make an update anyways.

Update 10: I spend way too much time on this (or in other words, the backplate is done.)

To start this part off, I needed to level off the piece of acrylic after all of the failed attempts. So I put it in a vice,

    Then leveled it off,

And then the camera died. Basically from here I used a plastic cutter to cut a level edge, measure the size of the space needed for the acrylic, and cut it to that size, then redid the template for it, used the drill press to cut out some holes to start filing from, and then spent many, many hours filing it down. In the end, I had something that looked like this:

And just to make sure that everything would work, I tested the fit of the the various connectors.

and everything fit. Throughout all this however I had forgotten to cut out a ventilation hole for the fan. seeing as this is probably a good thing to have, I proceeded to cut this out. So to start this I once again clamped the entire thing down on the drill press.

And then cut out an obscene amount of holes in order to reduce the amount of filling I would have to do.

And after filling for a while, I had a result of this:

I was not completely done with the backplate yet, as I still had to sandblast it. Once that was done, it had an almost final look of this:

The picture isn't the greatest, and while I did do some more filing afterwards in order to make everything look better, I filled it past the point where it it can look perfect so eventually I simply decided that it looked good enough. With that done I then worked on reattaching the front ports,

and started work on the power button. This will be shown in the next update since its not complete yet. After that all I have to do is order in the controller connectors and attach them, and then this is done, and I can work more on the next custom case.

Looks very good. Like Brazsty said you could get a better GPU though. A R9 280 is a good recommendation, but like PassionFruit tried to say, you will have trouble finding a 2GB version, so just go with the normal 3 GB version  .

Here is the situation, I have these 3 left over from a Humble Bundle and I already own them so I'm doing a giveaway, this is a high quality trio of games, they are all games I've played through to completion, enjoyed and personally recommend.

Bioshock: Infinite is a fantastic game in almost every way, and is more of an experience than a game IMHO. Mafia 2 runs very well on PC, has a great story, great music, excellent voice acting and really creates an immersive atmosphere that pulls you into the role you play. I enjoyed this game immensely and it will probably be one of the few games I play more than once soon. Spec Ops: The Line is a third person shooter with a dark gritty story that you won't forget, shake up your moral compass and prepare for anarchy in Dubai.

Post in the thread as your entry and tomorrow I will use random.org to pick one of the posts, the lucky winner will receive all 3 games in the form of Humble gift links redeemable on Steam!

Good luck (obviously if anyone posts more than once you get disqualified)

Draw will take place midnight GMT 09/07/14

    Update #3 - 7/6/2014:

    Alright guys, new update here.

I finally got the hardware to get this thing up and running! And got the switches mounted permanently in the top of the case!

So I took a trip to Memory Express to pick up the hardware I needed to get this thing to run. A AMD 7850k, Curcial M500 120GB mSata SSD, and A Kingston Fury 8GB 1866Mhz stick of memory.

The SSD, this thing is pretty damn tiny. The diagram under it is 1:1 picture of a 2.5" hard drive believe it or not.

    Installed!

The RAM. I really wanted to go with a high clocked, like 2400Mhz, daul channel 8GB kit to really get every last bit of performance out of the APU but unfortunately I wasn't able to fit a stick in the first slot due to the CPU cooler being to large. So I had to go with this, luckily it's 1866Mhz which isn't awful but it's still not great. Also thanks Memory Express for the big ass in store warranty sticker for a product that already has lifetime warranty, real useful...

Dem pins! This is my first from scratch AMD build and I've got to say their method of putting the pins on the processor makes a bit more sense to me.

Installed! I also have to say their socket system works a bit better too, there's very little risk of bending any pins. The processor just drops right into the socket, no worry of whether or not you have it lined up wrong.

I also got the buttons glued in. I just used some epoxy for the plastic bits and hot glue for the switches and around the edges.

    The reset button.

    And the start button.

    From the top.

No with the essentials assembled I can plug it into a spare power supply and see if it boots.

And everything worked as planned it booted and I got an OS installed on it. All I have to do is redo the back plate, get the actual power supply, and put modders mesh in the cartridge slot and vent hole.

Here's a pic of how I had to set this thing up to manage to get an Ethernet cable to it, yeah it's a bit ghetto.

And that's all for now! The project is almost done, I don't expect any more than two more updates or so.

    Thanks for reading!

OK so the build log. Please note this is far from finished ! I have some serious mods left to do..

So I tidied up the wiring that comes with the case.

    And then fitted the PSU.

    Cracked out the board.

And turned the case around. A shot of the cavernous interior !

OK. So what I was most worried about, the CPU.

    Seems legit...

And time came to fit it to the motherboard. After wrestling with it for a while nervously I finally realised that 2011 has two mechs, both need to be engaged. Very odd !

    Board in..

OK, interlude.. One 7" Android tablet..

Keep and eye out for that thing in the next week or so. It's going to be a part of the PC itself.

Wiring, and a couple of hard drives.

    Wires.

    Tidy.

Then it was round to the back for some cable management.

OK so time to fit the H110. Remove the top.

    And open up the cooler.

    Get out all the bits.

And then TIM clean the pump. I am using my own TIM.

    Fans

    And fit.

    Turn it back around..

    Fit the pump

    Fit the SSD

Sorted. Right round to the back.

    Aaaaand..

    BEAST.

You know those expensive headset holders that everybody wants to show off their expensive headsets, some people buy ridiculously expensive ones, and some people build them, but now "andreas_dock", from the Sweclockers forum, has come up with this genius idea.

You need an IKEA Galant toilet roll holder, only costs 5:99$

Then you simply attach it under a shelf or something like that and you have a cheap and nice looking headset holder in brushed aluminum

Please note that they are retail units (in the video I said pre-production, but this has since been changed) and they are Korean unlocked global units, so you will need to verify if they will work correctly on your carrier! To my knowledge they will work on AT&T or T-Mobile, but I got no data - only get voice and SMS on my carrier (Bell) so YMMV.

Either way you can still enter to win one, and you an always use it as a portable gaming device or whatever... I mean, it's a G3 man! The wifi will work! Best of luck to everyone!

    1. According to Luka glass will actually look better.
    2. Yes this thread.
    3. Glass is not that much harder to work with if you take your time and have a propane torch, it can be snapped with a file as well.
    4. The main advantage is yes looks, but also that glass does not stain, does not react with most things, and in general if never broken will last forever. plastics do last a long time, but glass lasts forever (to my knowledge, at least thats what we learned in school, that it does not biodegrade)
    5. because no one to my knowledge has done it before. Also because glass offers a slight savings when you consider that it can be joined to itself reliably, and altered in ways acrylic cannot (i.e. blowing into it and making big chambers, you could make a balling ass custom reservoir if you really learned glass blowing)

I would like to say that I do expect a lot of hiccups along the way, especially fitting it all together. I have never worked with glass before but I do know how to use a torch, and thanks to the ever growing pothead community there are a crap load of glass working video's on youtube.

The system this is being done to is a cheapo build (my first pc build) that is going to be replaced with something much better, so nothing precious will be lost if it does fail catastrophically.

I'll be using monsoon hardline fittings and either borosilicate or flint glass tubing, 12.7mm OD with a wall thickness of either 1.2 or 1.6mm depending on whats in stock on amazon when I have the money. Also aloooooooooot of patience.
