XPS 13 or MBP 13?
Ivan Ivanov Ivanovski replied to Ivan Ivanov Ivanovski's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Thanks, I do edit video but not that often, I don't plan on switching to Final Cut since I use DaVinci Resolve which is to me as good as Premiere, but free. I have decided I will probably wait for Coffe Lake verisons of the XPS since there are some leaks suggesting 4-core CPUs that are ultra-low wattage for ultrabooks, which would be really good for the performance. If there will be dissapointing performance gains I'll just buy the Kaby Lake one for cheaper. -
XPS 13 or MBP 13?
Ivan Ivanov Ivanovski replied to Ivan Ivanov Ivanovski's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
That may be true in your country, but here the base macbook is actually 100€ cheaper than the base XPS, since I would be forced to buy a dongle for either (I need an ethernet and HDMI port) and also an external SSD since neither 128 or 250 gb is really enough for storing video files for editing (Just for the edit process, later I convert them to storage formats). The performance of these two is the same in the programs I use. So really what I am worried about with the Mac is thermal throttling and the fact that its very anty-consumer with practically no user servicable parts. That said the XPS is only better with the SSD, otherwise it's Solder City. But what makes the biggest difference for me is the screen, where the Mac clearly wins. I guess ill make a choice based on pricing when I go and buy one in October. -
XPS 13 or MBP 13?

Well yeah thats how it is if you want a good looking ultrabook. The XPS and Macbook offer pretty much the same for the price at the base config. I could go with a zenbook for about 900€ but i want something premium. -
Hello! I wanted to ask you guys what you would go with if you had to decide between an XPS 13 and a Macbook Pro 13. I would buy the XPS that has 8gb RAM, 250gb SSD and an i5-7200u with the Full HD display. This would cost me 1530€. For the Macbook I would go with an i5, 8gb of ram and a 128gb storage, non touchbar verison. The laptop itself would be 1440€ but I would also buy an additional 500gb external ssd. I really cant decide between the two, size and weight is practically the same, performance is the same, I don't care about the OS. The big benefit of the mac is the brilliant screen with great scaling, but the xps has more battery life and way more IO (altho it is still poor). What would you guys go with? Any alternatives at the same price? Keep in mind I cant get the LG Gram or the Razer stealth in europe unless I want to pay an absolutely crazy premium. Thanks.

I tried running with a battery, without it, plugging it in while running on AC, numerous combinations that might fix it. I have also reinstalled the battery drivers to no avail.

Hello! I have a unique problem, I was using my laptop recently and I have completely drained the battery without a milivolt left in it. Since then however it just wont charge the battery any more, I tried a whole combo of plugging and unplugging the battery while on, off and so on. The battery wont charge under Windows or any other OS, like Ubuntu and FreeBSD. The last resort I figured would be to upgrade the BIOS, since it controls if the battery gets charged or not, but the problem is I cannot install the BIOS without atleast a 10% charge I think, the update program just wont run otherwise. I have tried to force run it in CMD and even under FreeDOS, but it won't install for nothing. All I could do is get the BIOS file from the .exe, but I cant apply it without the main program. So my question is is there a way to fool windows into thinking it has a working battery? I haven't really found anything on the topic by Googleing. Thank you.

Hello! Recently I was looking into getting my own cloud for backup and synchronisation with all of my PC's. I was looking at the WD My Cloud 3TB (which has a very attractive 150€ price tag), but after looking around I have found that it does not synchronise folders such as Dropbox or OneDrive would if I do not use it on my local network. Only one PC will be connected via local network, my laptop and other PC will need access via internet. Another thing is that my laptop has Linux, and WD has no Linux support except access through the browser. So after some digging I have found about the option to connect a Raspberry Pi to an external HDD, install ownCloud on it and it would run with synchronisation. What would you guys go for?

I meant flashing the GPU BIOS. Found a better case than the Bequiet and R5, the Naxonia Deep Silence 3, there is tons of sound dampening on there. -

After fiddeling around with some setting I have discovered that the gpu is the loudest, the second one is the PSU. Is there a way to decrease gpu fan speed without altering the BIOS? -

Allright I just did a quick sound test with my phone and a decibel metering app (I know thats not accurate) and it showed about 30deciber from one meter away an I know thats not much hou much could I even decrease that? -

Not much more, that's the interesting thing. the RPM does not effect it's loudness that much. Wonder if i could just switch the fan itself. -

I am sure since I have blocked each fan by hand and only left one working and the only one that is too loud is the CPU cooler and maybe the GPU. -

CPU cooler, turned down as much as it can be, too loud to sleep next to. -

I go to sleep at 3 am, other people in my room probably won't. Will consider that, altho wouldn't an oversized air cooler be more silent?
