64 isnt necessary. 32GB would be just fine for your use case. The 32GB kit comes in 2 x 16 sticks so should you ever need more you can add 2 more 16GB sticks.

the 2700X is a refreshed version with higher clockspeeds but only has a small performance gain. The 1700 is the best choice in your price range.

Very recent one, a friend of mine asked for help with putting together a cheap PC for light video and photo editing. Was able to put together something quite solid for the £400 budget. After looking it all over she says "I'm just going to buy a £1200 mac instead on a payment plan" the specs for which are shocking.

It really baffles me when people ask you for tech advice then completely ignore everything you say; do what they were going to anyway. Then inevitably come back to you a couple of months later with problems.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I meant to reply yesterday but forgot. Unfortunately my new job is really strict on non work stuff being done on my station (party poopers!).

I tried MakeMKV and am absolutely delighted with it, can fully rip a DVD in less than 10 minutes which is way faster than other programs I've tried. In conjuction with my editing suite I can get a 2 hour movie down to around 1.1GB with no loss of quality

@JTB123 I strongly agree with this. MakeMKV is fantastic, and is flexible as it allows you to choose what gets ripped (Which audio tracks, subtitles, etc). The file is uncompressed, so there's no loss in quality.

I would however suggest considering whether you'd want to run the resulting MKV fie through something like handbrake to compress it to save space (RF setting of 18 or 20 will be nigh indistinguishable from the original), and make sure to deinterlace!

However, that's an optional step. Most Media Players can take the original MKV rip and deinterlace it in real time with no performance loss. "Progressive Scan" DVD players (Like, set top ones for TV's) are deinterlacing in real time - Progressive Scan is just a fancy term for deinterlacing.

We don't need rings (or any other things for that matter) to show, that we like eachother.

JTB123 got a reaction from Brawhammer in Why does my SSD boot time slow down when I connect my HDD/s ?
I have this same issue when I did this on an older machine, the most likely reason is that the Bios is configured to still check all the HD's on start up and not just the SSD. If you alter the boot option to only check the SSD then this should solve the problem for you.

However, take that with a pinch of salt, I have done this on said PC and am still getting slower boot times. I have no idea what is causing it and have just given up for the time being.

Out of curiosity what kind of boot times are you getting?

And while we're on the subject, this topic marks the first time I've seen people say they get poor speeds with BT, even before I upgraded my download and upload speeds were decent.

JTB123 got a reaction from LeighPing in Getting SSD. How to manage storage/booting?
For the boot drive option the easiest thing would be to clone your current boot drive to the SSD. I have done that twice and it works like a charm. You don't have to set anything up and everything is where it should be, seriously it's like magic   You can either do this with software or your local PC store will more than likely offer this service.

One thing I'm a little confused on, am I write in understanding that your current rig has 1 hard drive and everything is on that? If so then it should be quite simple, you will need to back up your game files to another HD and then after you have cloned your boot drive and have it running you will need to update steam, uplay etc to the new location. Easiest way to do this would be to create a new folder in the new hard drive, move all the copied game data to that folder and set that as the designated folder for the games. It would be best to get the drive as empty as possible before cloning as the cloning process will be faster.

I did something very similar last year when I upgraded my boot drive to an SSD. I did loose the save game data for a couple of my games so I would recommend looking up save migration for games if you can if the data is valuable. Steam is usually great for this though, the games for which I lost data were ones that were installed from a disc.

    Hope this helps

JTB123 reacted to CM7 in PC is checking all drives on startup despite being set to only check SSD in bios. Why?
Resetting the bios is just setting the bios settings to default. The battery is used keep the bios settings saved, But if the computer has been unplugged or hasn't been turned on in a while the battery cannot recharge. So when it's drained completely the set settings reset to default every time the computer is turned off. This might be the reason the load times are so long at start up, because the computer needs to detect all of the hardware every time you power it on. I am no expert, but hopefully someone else that has more experience will be able to help.
