some wrong info about the finder. and usability.

sort by is not system wide. when i say sort by name in one folder and sort by date in another they stay sorted that way separately. it also keeps the same view (icons, list, column) and the exact place you were scrolled to. and if that wasnt enough in addition to sort there is also arrange which will make separate lists which can then be sorted (ie if you have it sorted by name and arranged by kind you will have groups of each file type arranged by name) and that saves for each directory also.

internal storage does NOT all just get piled together. there is a root for each drive individually (go menu->computer) except if you're using the fusion drive (which it explains when you chose which drive you buy, is a hdd mated to an sdd with software that automatically keeps the data that would most benefit from speed on the ssd) this can also be disabled after the fact (with a few quirks i admit).

have never ever needed to refresh a folder on my mac to make a file appear. like ever. its always instant. donno what bug you stumbled into here but it is definitely not the norm.

iphoto is not required to manage photos. you can get the same windows picture management experience if you change the default over to image capture rather than iphoto.

and just as a general answer to some of the "questions" (probably rhetorical but w/e) a lot of the default settings (reversed scroll, non repeating keys, particular gestures for things, lots of "automatic-ness", etc) are there because a shockingly large percentage of mac users are people whos first apple product is an ipad or iphone and those settings are the same on ios. it makes it much less disorienting for a new user if they already know how their iphone works.

Kinda disappointed. The way Linus did everything was very different from mine. The disadvantages pointed were mostly easy to fix.
    - I never used spotlight to launch applications. I always use Alfred to launch apps, and keep my dock organized.
    - I always use the Finder with the Column view to browse through files. These are the view options and this is how it looks like. It was not system-wide in my experience. I just had to set again in different folder and it stays like that; i.e. my Screenshots folder are in gallery view, the normal is in column view, sorted by name, arranged by kind, and my downloads folder are sorted by the created date, in column view.
    - I rarely resize my window sizes manually. I use third party applications for that. While they are usually not free, free versions of this type of applications do exist!
My Mac is heavily personalized for my own usage at this point, but that's what makes me comfortable on using it.
In Windows, it's a lot harder, if not impossible to personalize the system to the same extent. The customization potential is far greater in OSX.
There are reasons why Hackintosh exist, and I believe this is one of it.
I'll leave my useful apps list post here again. #

I really really really wish Linus would Cover running Windows with Apple's bootcamp.

Perhaps even do a comparison between a PC with similar hardware specs VS iMac running Windows in gaming performance?

I have been a mac user for 10 years now, and I game on Windows using the bootcamp dual boot feature.

I also feel this is a strong point of MACs- windows machines don't easily let you run OS X, but OS X supports Windows natively.

Please consider doing some features related to bootcamp?

Also- one more point about OS X, text and window zooming feature is virtually flawless- especially compared to Windows, IMHO.

    Thanks, LMG rocks

i want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but its clear you have never truly given osx a chance. you cant simply expect everything about the ui to be identical when switching from windows to osx. even a cursory look in system preferences or half an hour googling would have resolved every single issue you're talking about. furthermore a decent amount of it is literally almost identical. osx has the 3 color coded buttons on the top of the window. osx has almost identical file management (better in some ways) as windows. moving windows is literally identical. the list goes on. with the exception of incompatible apps you havent even mentioned any of the actual differences in osx.

your preconceptions are throwing off your analysis. windows is no more intuitive (and dare i say less intuitive) than osx, but you're simply comparing how "simple" something is based on what you already know how do to. if you had never used either the windows shortcuts would be just as confusing.

due the the fact that you're on this forum i am assuming that you arent as inept as you're coming off, therefore i must conclude that there is no way you used osx in any significant way for "a month". if you use osx for a month and you dont know how files work (especially when is almost IDENTICAL to windows), and you dont know that windows have the same 3 buttons on the top (granted its on top left not the top right- i know, super confusing /s) you are not using osx significantly.

and this is just straight bullshit. apple does charge more money because they spend more on design, on support and because they give you a machine fully built that requires no tinkering of any sort (just werks). and yeah then theres the apple tax™ which has been getting better for a lot of apple machines to the point that most of them are decent buys (mba, mbpr, 5k imac, etc) but the parts they use are neither outdated nor "inefficient" compared to pc parts. that is just nonsense (the exception is right after a new product like a cpu comes out before apple integrates it in the next refresh of the line). apple has in some cases had things like nex gen cpus BEFORE the general pc market. so no, i dont agree.

i dont believe you. all macs have a plethora of temperature sensors including skin temp sensors which keep the skin of the mac within operating range. if temps exceed this amount (which you can do on purpose for fun) the machine will thermal throttle and eventually shut completely off.

i dont doubt that it was hot, i dont even doubt that it was uncomfortably hot. but functioning macs cannot burn you.

as an aside, apple has taken to calling their laptops "portables" due to the excessive heat they can generate. they still wont burn you though.

ive seen a lot of "apple is dying" opinions for years and years, but i dont see the money train stopping anytime soon. couple of things to keep in mind:
    1) apple has never been about market share. they're about profit. it doesnt matter if 79% of mobile users use android if apple is still raking in the majority of the mobile profits. and ios users have been shown to spend more money on things like apps, and use more of their mobile data (on average) which is attractive to developers and that can help with a positive feedback loop.
    2) apple is buying back their own stock. massively.
    3) apple watch. whether you like it or hate you just know that everyone and their mother will be wearing one in a few months, and apple is likely to hold the lead in that market for a few years (just like ipad and iphone)

theres a few things i really like about the apple "culture", first and foremost apple is not in the information selling business. every time i see a "complete your profile" notification in facebook or the google sphere (or really like 100 other places) it makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

secondly is the support (which granted most users on here would probably rarely if ever need) but if my mother has an issue with anything apple its a 15 minute stop in at the local genius bar and shes good to go. apple support is like the antithesis of comcast. there will always be SOME people which horror stories but support is completely free if no parts are required, or if its under warranty, and its a same day thing for software issues. for people who are not masters of the OS this is amazing. really nothing out there compares in both cost, speed and quality of support.

thirdly is the walled garden metaphor. IF and only if your needs fit within the confines of the walled garden, everything is amazing. for me, this is fine for 90% of my use, and i just dual boot into windows for the other stuff. (im sure someone will take exception to this.)

obviously people have different needs and the cost is definitely higher outright for "lower power" machines (software optimization really does help this. see ios vs android performance vs specs.- again, obviously not for all cases) but theres a lot you get for the cost too. and the resale value is soooo much better than windows machines its kinda silly. if you upgrade on a 3 year cycle its definitely comparable in overall cost to owning a pc. i await your torches and pitchforks...

with the exception of ios being locked down (no one can really argue this) i disagree with pretty much everything else. you have your causality backwards. ios isnt optimized because the hardware is weak, the hardware is weak because ios is optimized. they want the lowest clock, lowest power consuming components they can get because it means they can use smaller batteries and thinner phones. if you used the same size battery than an iphone uses in an android the battery life would be terrible, and yet due to the software optimization iphones can and do beat android phones in speed tests, benchmarks and smoothness. (not EVERY android, but many, and usually all at time of iphone launch) essentially apple is choosing to "underpower" their phones because they can give you a top notch performance experience with a physically smaller device. ipads and macs are not really "fucking weak" at launch either. even purely judging by benchmarks...

as far as macs go, in what way is osx locked down? compared to linux maybe but compared to windows its not locked any more than usual. granted osx only works on supported hardware but thats the business strategy (obviously not intended to be used on non apple hardware) but the os itself is not limited to certain file types, thats only a limitation of the software you have installed. i can access all files on the machine same as windows, i can install anything from anywhere, etc. and why in gods name would you "need to have linux installed to properly evaluate hardware performance"? that makes no sense. do windows users install linux to evaluate their hardware?

i think a lot of the options they give you are over priced, but most of things they make are just expensive.
    things apple overprices:
    -ram
    -storage
    -accessories
    -ipods

but i think most of their machines are just expensive. i mean you wouldnt get mad at bmw for including leather seats... and anyone who has owned a $500 laptop knows its no macbook.

to be fair, ive been using osx since there was an osx and there are constantly new things i find. i think the big problem is people assuming things arent possible. unless you have researched the exact thing you're talking about the assumption should always be that its probably an option some where. it seems like 90% of peoples complaints would be fixed with a trip to system preferences.

You can drag and drop files with two fingers or one finger for that matter....what are you talking about. And you can enable a scroll bar, not to mention a scroll bar appears the instant you start scrolling with two fingers (or a scroll wheel).
