Just stumbled across this today, and I'm blown away! This needs more attention!

Essentially it's a full-on laptop motherboard with an ARM SoC (so, no Windows or x86 applications, but this isn't intended for general consumer use) and a very high-end FPGA, along with some RAM, flash, and all the I/O you could ever want.

While there have been SoC/FPGA hybrids in the past (even Altera and Xilinx themselves are coming out with them), I've yet to see anything that has high-end components like this.

Why would you want an FPGA in your "open source" laptop? Well, they give bitcoin mining as one example, but I see it as potential for a lot more (open source video processing for one, even in a setup like this the video core still requires proprietary drivers). You could even program it with a secondary CPU to work on other tasks. If anyone has questions about the possiblities with this, feel free to ask, I do a bit of work with FPGA's for school (though I'm no expert).

They seem to be pretty far along in the process as well.

(This is my first time posting in the news section so if I'm doing anything wrong let me know)

You haven't postedn anything either. You are starting with the assumption that you are correct and then saying he has to PROVE you wrong (which is entirely the wrong way to conduct this). When he does so you toss out his evidence, and start to claim that he hasn't "owned enough AMD CPU's"? What does that have to do with anything?

Again, show something for WHY you are 100 percent correct.

I don't care if 3 million threads say that 85 degrees is the "agreed upon" max temp for a CPU, this isn't a vote, just like we don't vote that gravity is a thing. A CPU will never last forever, as power flows through a transistor, a small amount of irreperable damage is done to it. The more power you push through it, the more damage, this is a VERY simple fact. I'd say perhaps a CPU will run fine at 85 C, but you begin to degrade the processor at a very fast rate.

"FURTHERMORE, If you check a thread on AMD overclocking you will see that AMD chips are agreed upon to run hotter than Intel chips, which begs the question, if intel's max temp is agree'd upon at 85c then why is AMD set at 60c ?"

It doesn't matter if they run hotter, that is more due to the size of the die, but that doesn't ~magically~ mean that you can suddenly run it at a higher temperature without running into problems, that's now hot it works.

I don't even understand your last point, it makes no sense. To overclock an 8350 with the stock cooler would be insane. And what do you propose for getting a core temp readout that is "correct" in your mind? You ask how overclocking could be a thing, but don't consider aftermarket coolers? Also, my friends 8350 ran at ~55 C with the stock cooler at stock settings...

62 C is a good point to stop at (hell even 55 C). Your claim that you'll get a 100% performance improvement between 62 C and 85 C is completely and totally absurd.

Um, yes it is, some might not consider it a programming language as it's not compiled, but it is a language (it says it in the name, HyperText Markup Language). If you're worried about lazy syntax issues you can use XHTML which has more strict requirements.

As far as first languages go, I'd recommend C/C++, it's really not as bad as some people make it seem IMO.

If you want to play GBA games on a 3DS through a flash cart iirc you'll need something like the Supercard DSTwo which has a processor built into it for just that purpose (normal DS flash carts couldn't do it without using the gba slot as well as the ds is not quite powerful enough to emulate most DS games).

I play a lot of PS1/DS/N64 games because a) my PC can't be played on the couch or outside of my house, b) I don't have a portable PS1/N64, c) Are you seriously going to recommend touchscreen controlls for ps1/n64?

I also play some Arma tactics when I'm not on my wifi, it's quite good. Of course GTA: Vice CIty is amazing too.

If I'm at home on the couch I play some assasins creed, rogue legacy, warhammer, all that kind of stuff.

If you look at it as a $300 PC streaming device that also does android sorta then you're doing it *completely* wrong. It's a full fledged android tablet with all of the features you could want from one, and some of the best specs out there for $300, which is not bad at all. On top of that amazing $300 tablet you get the ability to stream games as well when you're at home!

The battery life crushes any other "mobile" gaming platform out there (seriously, I don't see how you can call something a mobile gaming platform when it has to stay plugged into the wall to function for more than 3 hours). I get well over 15 hours of average use on a single charge, about 7 if I'm playing a lot of graphically intensive games.

The standard formats (microSD, mini-HDMI, USB-OTG) make it super simple to adapt it to other uses (I've connected keyboard+mouse to it for quake on the go, along with easy chatting in IM's). Hell if I wanted to I could hook it up to my monitor and use it as a backup computer!

On top of all that, I don't have $600 to blow on a phone, my phone can do some basic games, but nowhere near what a tegra 4 can pump out.

You can still use the device without streaming. This isn't rocket science. There is also software out there to let you do similar streaming with any graphics card. It's a full android device.

AMD rates their current line of CPU's for 62 C, any more than that and you will likely be degrading the performance/lifetime of the CPU. I don't see why someone should ever need to go above that for ~.2GHz which will end up with zero extra performance boost. Seriously.

(G)Vim (depending on whether I'm on server or local), DWM, zsh, and beginning to work tmux into my workflow as well (gcc used for most compiling needs). All running on Arch Linux.
