That's correct. Hello! -
Scarymonkeys reacted to Lil Chillbil in What was your first computer?
Used this as my sole computer from 2004-2011 with 0 upgrades done to the inside, by the time I opened it up in 2012 after it sitting idle for a year it was the 1st time the seal was broken and the fans wouldn't even spin from the amount of dust

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from TheRandomness in Rate My PC Build
Hello!
So, I recently acquired a new keyboard/headset, and it gave me the idea to post my PC build/peripherals and ask other forum members what they thought of my setup, what they would rate it, what they would improve, and what they thought as a price/performance ratio. So, without further a due, what do you guys think of it? Specs are as followed. Keep in mind that I bought these parts on Black Friday of 2014 (I bought the GPU on my birthday, recieved the keyboard, mouse, and headset as a gift, but everything else I bought on Black Friday of 2014.), so prices may have been different from now! Also keep in mind that I already own this.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from TheRandomness in Rate My PC Build
First of all, thank you for the suggestions! I really wish I could have gone with an R9 380; however, it wasn't out at the time, and with AMD not performing well under Linux, it sadly wasn't much of an option. I really wish I could have gone with that though.
SSD would be pretty nice. Thanks!
Thanks for the rating haha.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from elfensky in Steam Machine Thoughts
Before I start this thread, I want to acknowledge that I know that Steam Machines have already been posted about. I know this thread has been done before more than likely, but I just want to post my view of Steam Machines. Feel free to post your opinions below!
Alright, so first off I'll about my opinion on the uses. A lot of people say they don't know why use a PC as a console, but sometimes it's nice to be able to sit back with an easy interface and play a game, relaxed. As the same time you could dual-boot with Windows or the such for web browsing if you needed it instead of using an XBOX One for games and having to buy a $200 laptop or something just for web browsing.
On that topic, no, there isn't every game in the world on the SteamOS/Linux. But there is a nice selection of games out currently such as Dying Light, Left 4 Dead 2, Don't Starve, Torchlight 2, CS:GO, XCOM, Civ, etc. Not to mention tons of AAA games, survival games, etc. such as Shadow of Mordor, ARK: Survival Evolved, Batman, and Grid are coming out really soon. (Take a look at the games being announced. It's taken a turn for sure.) Sure, some ports such as on games like Dying Light aren't fantastic, but they're playable for the most part, and they're being worked on constantly. Look how far Dying Light has come since it first launched on Linux. A lot of games on Windows don't have great ports either.
Drivers have come a long way. I use Ubuntu on my GTX 960 as a main OS and the drivers perform not as well as on Windows, but they're far from bad. They're being improved every day, and so is AMD's, though AMD isn't the greatest quite yet.
While OpenGL isn't as efficient yet, Vulkan is going to be a ton better, and it'll probably improve a lot.
I think Steam Machines will be a big boost for Ubuntu, though they're not as stable yet, they'll be pretty good for it. Linux is growing, and I use it every day. I even record with it. (I use SimpleScreenRecorder, Audacity, and Gimp and my videos definitely aren't bad quality. OBS is also available as of recently.) I'm not fan boying in any way, but just stating what I truly feel. You can tell I'm not fan boying as I'm buying a Windows partition to dual boot future games like Just Cause 3 and Battlefront 3.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from Kherm in Changing mobo and CPU, should I format ?
He's using a 3570k.I'm guessing you're upgrading because you need the i7's hyper-threading? If not, then honestly don't. There will barely be a performance difference, and your CPU should last you for quite the while more.
If you need the i7 power, I'd recommend a 4790, as it's cheaper and better.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from C0LL0SS0S in Cherry MX Sampler
Alright. I may contact Cherry and just use the ones they give if they allow me to sample. Though those key caps could be nice. -
Scarymonkeys got a reaction from The Toaster in 5820k
What are the uses of the computer? If doing 3D modeling and the such the i7 will be quite handy, but if just gaming then it's a waste, as they give the same gaming performance as an i5.
If you're multi-tasking, the 5820k is nice depending on how heavy your workloads are, but keep in mind that even though the CPU itself is 30 pounds extra, you'll have to go with the X99 chipset and DDR4 ram which is very expensive.
Another option is to wait for Skylake, but I don't know how long that'll be or how much extra performance it'll give.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from stconquest in 700$ build
I meant the 3.0 ports will be of no use because the board I recommended has 2.0 and no 3.0. I never said it has none. Another board will be fine with the 3.0 ports if it has them. The P33 board is a great board. It's not cheap. Second of all, when did I say the case has no 3.0 port? I never said that at all. You don't need a board with 3.0 if the casehas 2.0 ports is what I was saying. (As long as the board has 2.0 ports as well.) I was trying to get the point across that you don't need 3.0 ports on the board as the case has 2.0 ports, so a board with 2.0 ports is fine. I didn't word it correctly and I apologize for that.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from hypnodog in 700$ build
I see your point. Though you can always add more ram if you need it and just buy single 8GB sticks to save slots. -
Scarymonkeys got a reaction from Gathercole in New Gaming Build
I wouldn't get a new CPU unless you absolutely need it, nor would I OC. For a couple frames extra, you'd be spending another $100 on a decent cooler; and if you don't know what you're doing you could easily kill you CPU. If you really need a new CPU, and you're purely gaming, then I'd get an i5 4590/4690k depending if you decide to OC. The i7 won't have a benefit unless you're 3D modeling or video rendering. To be honest though, ivy bridge and Haswell are almost the same speeds. Not really worth it unless, again, you're video rendering or 3D modeling.

Scarymonkeys got a reaction from Gathercole in New Gaming Build
You don't need to OC or get a new CPU unless multitasking. That one's just as fast as a Haswell gaming-wise. The PSU you linked is pretty overpriced and a cheaper unit. I'd go with this for the same price: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/super-flower-power-supply-sf550p14xehx
Case is fine. CPU cooler isn't needed unless OC'ing. SSD is your choice, as it will boost speeds quite a bit. I suggest the 850 Evo/Pro or Crucial MX100. New motherboard isn't needed either.

Scarymonkeys reacted to Aniallation in Z97 Extreme3
True, but I was addressing it more towards how the D14 was meant as more of a "performance" cooler in Noctua's lineup, and the Extreme3 isn't exactly a board you buy to push your 4790K to the limits with overvolting. There's definitely cheaper (and smaller) coolers then the D14 that are just as quiet, but offer less cooling performance.

Scarymonkeys reacted to rentaspoon in New build time again: Budget Z97 board
Try nowH97 are the same prices by a few pennies but thanks yeah but the processors fluctuate in price a lot, the 4690k was £165 a week ago now its floating £180 - £200. I'm only looking at the 4670k because my wife has about £35 of vouchers. -
Scarymonkeys got a reaction from Lord_Karango17 in r9 270x vs GTX 760
They're almost the same, with the GTX 760 in the lead by just a little bit. To be honest, the 270X has way better value unless, of course, you're OC'ing. I would personally skip both though and save a couple bucks more for an R9 280/GTX 960.

OP, should be much better than the 8320, even in video rendering or anything like that. 3D modeling may be better than the 8320, but for that I'd at least recommend a Xeon 1231V3. I'm assuming you already have that GPU as it has no price? Dual-channel ram would be quite a bit faster, (Faster ram is generally noticeable when booting. At least it is for me.) but the Motherboard only has 2 ram slots, so I did 1 8GB stick so you have the option to upgrade to 16 in the future. If only the board had more ram slots it'd be perfect for that budget. EDIT: Forgot to ask what all you're playing before I completely recommend this.)

Yeah. With more WD recommendations and it being the same price I'll just go for that. Especially with my current one working fine. -

Scarymonkeys reacted to JudeMallett in PC crash/freeze need help :( (Solved)
Hi guys, my relatively new pc has been running into some problems.
The computer will sometimes crash/freeze. When this happens there is no input from my keyboard or mouse, no BSOD, no error message, no shutdown and if audio is playing it will loop making a horrible noise.
These events don't seem to be following any pattern, sometimes they happen under load, sometimes if I'm just browsing the web. They've been happening fairly regularly maybe one every two days but sometimes more and sometimes less.
I don't know what could be causing these crashes so if one of you could give me a hand it would be great.
System specs-
i7 5820k (cooled by a hyper 212 EVO)
GTX 970 (windforce)
16gb ddr4 (crucial ballistix)
EVGA 500w PSU
due to the small power supply I haven't overclocked anything so everythings at base settings.
Thanks for your help.
P.S. sorry if this is in the wrong place, I didn't know exactly where to put it.

Why buy now. For all we know GTA V will have better multi-threaded or single-threaded performance. Wait until the game comes out.

That most likely I will absolutely never use. Not a big deal there..Thanks man! I have side buttons on my mouse that work perfectly but I still prefer the actual hot keys to be honest.
