  1. Hi, I have a custom built NAS however, the case I currently use for it is a Thermaltake Core V1 mini. Unfortinetly it's very loud and I'm just using the standard fan and a stock cooler for my CPU. I was thinking of putting it in my cabinet that has a large hole in the back for I assume cable management but that could probably be stupid for system temps/health. Any ideas? Thank you.
  2. No worries, thank you. I'll just have to keep an eye on prices and hopefully get lucky haha.
  3. Hi, My girlfriend's MacBook display has been damaged and I was looking online for a replacement. I've noticed that they're quite expensive and have seen that the 2013 displays are significantly less expensive. I've looked online and apparently the connections have changed a little during generations however, I think it's just little things such as web cam and light sensor? Would I be able to use a older model display on a 2015 MacBook Pro? Thanks!
  4. It was mainly just for file transfer e.g. clips from a pc locally. I have an overkill network switch already as i got a very good deal on it. I was hoping to use an SSD for timeline scrubbing too but was mainly so there would be no bottle neck for performance when editing or transfering files if i decide to edit locally (pc ssd).
  5. Fair enough. Is there any of achieving abouts 500mbs ish? I understand that'll be impossible with HDDs (unless in RAID i suppose) hence why I thought SSD would be appropriate.
  6. Hi, Thanks for the reply that's good advice. I plan on getting the parts in a couple of months or something and some 2nd hand. In terms of network adapter, probably not however, I thought it would be better for speed and load balancing since I'd like to use the ssd for caching purposes.
  7. Hi, I currently own a Synology DS213J+ NAS I'm looking for something a little more powerful to run vms on and edit video off etc... I've came up with a PC part picker list. Please ignore the CPU choice it's a little over kill as it's for my PC as I'm using the one out of there. Link Any advice or changes? Thanks!
  8. Hey, I have the "original' amazon echo and I've just received a new router since my old one broke. I've pressed the reset button with a pin since it wouldn't let me change the wifi network in the app. The device is in setup mode and when I go to connect to it on the wifi network so I can connect it to my network the app doesn't know I'm connected so I can't proceed more into the setup. I've tried un-installing and reinstalling the app, forgot the wifi network for the amazon echo on my phone and I have no idea how ever to fix this. I've even de-registered it from my account as well. It's so frustrating since I don't think it's under warranty any more and Amazon doesn't have have a support number (in UK) for the Amazon Echo. Any suggestions? Thank you!
  9. Ahh I see! Makes sense. I'll check it out anyway and will be careful.
  10. Thank you! Much appreciated. Silly question but, how could this break my Macbook? or... is it just to cover them selves in case anything goes wrong?
  11. Hey, I've got a 2017 13" MacBook Pro running the latest version of Ubuntu. I've managed to get the keyboard, trackpad, WiFi etc... drivers installed but one thing I am struggling with the most is getting the fans to kick in. I've been doing a lot of research and I still cannot find any way of controlling the fans. I've tried installing "fancon" and it literally does nothing at all. Any ideas? (in case you're wondering, I need the fans as I'm doing virtualisation on VMware Player). Thank you!
  12. Never thought it took that long to compile stuff since all of my code was compiled instantly on my Ubuntu VM but then probs cos I've got an AMD Ryzen CPU in my PC. I'll look into more of the bundle anyway and the other CPU's you've recommended. Thank you for your help!
  13. Fair doos, that's fine, just low end tasks such as compiling C code and that. just thought it would be a fun project to build one that's hopefully a bit better but same size as my Synology NAS. Do you think that motherboard and cpu bundle would be suitable for that use case or shall I go for something more powerful?
  14. That seems like a great value deal tbh. Thank you! Will this be able to support low end virtualisation? e.g. Windows/Linux. If not then I'll look into the Pentium or A8/A10. I know it may sound crazy me expecting some form of virtualisation for the price. I'm trying to get the best value and lowest power consumption that's all haha. I currently have a Synology DS213J NAS it's great but... that has a single core CPU and 512mb RAM. It works but looking to expand my work flow instead of leaving on my main PC and controlling that outside of the network since it'll use up more power consumption and will possibly 'burn it out' quicker maybe haha.
  15. I mainly wanted to use it as a file server although it would be nice to have some flexibility for media server in the near future.
  16. Hi, I'm looking to build a small mini ATX NAS that has a quad core cpu and 8GB RAM (preferable DDR4 if I can) so it can run a VM for basic tasks. my budget if preferably £100 (without the case and hdd). I don't mind paying a little more and looking to get these parts 2nd hand if I can. I was going to go with AMD since I know more about their processors but probably might not be the best for this type of machine. Any ideas? Thank you!
  17. Awesome thanks! I'm thinking of going mini ATX!
  18. Alright thanks, I'm considering building a NAS in the future but I'd miss my Synology interface.
  19. Hey, I have a Synology DS213j. These are the lower end nas and currently I have 5tb storage (1TB HDD + 4TB HDD). I have 2X 1TB SSDs in my PC and was wondering if it was worth swapping the 1TB SSD into my NAS? They're connected via 1gigabit ethernet switch and currently get 70mbps - 100 mbps read/write. I kinda find the SSD would be more beneficial but not sure. Thanks!
  20. Loving the design! Great idea thanks. Will be a fun project!
  21. Thanks! That sounds like a good idea I might look into that but won't go over the top or anything. going top try and keep it on the simple side. Might even get one of those stickers that's kinda see through in a way. hopefully makes sense haha.
  22. Thanks, I'm thinking of putting 1 of the RGB fans for the rear fan. Not trying to go over the top or anything and might make it more simple in terms of colour.
