  1. Look into this before fathering children, please. For your own sake if not for theirs. Kids are not legally responsible for the crimes they commit. Until the age of 14 in Germany, it's the parent, who pays the fines and in cases, goes to jail. Obviously you'd risk losing your kid to social services too. Like I said, sneaking behind the backs of your parents has nothing to do with privacy. I'm not saying privacy isn't among the most important freedoms us humans can have. Not even that kids should not be entitled to a degree of privacy from their parents too. But it's the parent's task to determine that degree, not the kid's.

Just because the law says something that doesn't make it right
  2. So a millionaire programmer decides to kill himself because he got arrested and we're told that "After people reached out to him, Murdock appeared to calm down, and vowed instead to clear his name. Murdock died that evening."

    >inb4 conspiracy theories

    >Ian Murdock

    >Iam Murdered

    Coincidence?

I honestly think he was killed before he got a chance to kill himself, because he said he was going to post what happened on his blog and kill himself the day after, but no, he died on the day he tweeted that stuff, Monday. Someone also deleted his Twitter account:

I'm not committing suicide today. I'll write this all up first, so the police brutality ENDEMIC in this so call free country will be known.

  3. Is it a possibility this person is simply seeking attention?

He threatens suicide and then says that he's not gonna do it. Is he giving us suspense or something? I'm going to need to see evidence that the police did what he said they did.

I'm not committing suicide today. I'll write this all up first, so the police brutality ENDEMIC in this so call free country will be known.

He's saying that he's going to write up his experiences before killing himself, not that he won't kill himself. I'm assuming he'll put evidence up too.
  4. Ian Murdock, creator of Debian went on a disturbing rant about an encounter he had with the police on the 28th of December.

    http://techaeris.com/2015/12/28/debian-founder-ian-murdocks-tweets-raising-eyebrows/

His twitter was deleted yesterday, some believe his account may have been hacked or that he was intoxicated, however he said that he would post his experiences on his personal blog before killing himself, such a blog post has yet to surface. There has not been any other news from him since.

    Edit:

    We couldn't stop him: https://bits.debian.org/2015/12/mourning-ian-murdock.html

Some people are saying that he recorded it because of these two guys:

    Edit2:

There is evidence that he was actually arrested:

i'm committing suicide tonight.. do not intervene as i have many stories to tell and do not want them to die with me #debian #runnerkristy67

I'll write more on my blog later. But the police here beat me up for knowing on my neighbor's door.. they sent me to the hospital.

Then beat me up some more.

My bail for "assault against a police officer" are all that: $25,000.

I'll write more much later. They still don't have cameras on all police so I'm going to use my somewhat celebrity to hopefully stop this.

Quote: "We're the police, we always win."

My career is over now, so I'll be gone soon.

Maybe my suicide at this, you now, a successful business man, not a NIGGER, will finally bring some attention to this very serious issue.

I'm not committing suicide today. I'll write this all up first, so the police brutality ENDEMIC in this so call free country will be known.

if anyone wants to come over and see what the police did to me i would be more than happy for that

they beat the shit out of me twice, then charged me $25,000 to get out of jail for battery against THEM

i had to go to the hospital

    they followed me home

then they pulled me out of my house and did it again

    i had to have swtitches

then followed my home from there

i asked if they had cameras

    they said no

shall i post pictures for all my bruises from my against the police officers?

where they put you in a cell with absolutely no instructions whatever aside from the spell on the floor in piss?

Writing up my experience for others to hopefully prevent others from police abuse then you won't hear from me again

i'm going to post my case on my blog.. if anyone can post it on hacker news or wherever i would apprieciate it

i'm hoping coming from a successful white guy it will help everyone

(1/2) The rest of my life will be devoted to fighting against police abuse.. I'm white, I made $1.4 million last year,

(2/2) They are uneducated, bitter, and and only interested in power for its own sake. Contact me imurdock@imurdock.com if you can help. -ian

The police are uneducated, evil, and sadistic. Do not trust them.

The rest of my life is to fight against the police.. they are NOT friends, so don't ever ever believe otherwise.

What does one have to get education wise to become a police officer.. asking for a friend.

"We're the police, we can do whatever the fuck we want.."

This was right after the female officer ripped off my underwear.. I guess that's not considered rape if you're not a woman being raped.

I am a white male, make a lot money, pay a lot of money in taxes, and yet their abuse is equally doned out. DO NOT CROSS THEM!

Note: I haven't included the replies to other people here, if you need those go to the archive link

  5. LibreOffice should be higher than OpenOffice, it's much better maintained.

I suggest ENIGMA Game Maker as a alternative to Game Maker. It's libre and Game Maker compatible.

Nano should be higher up than vi/vim since it's easier, and add Links2 to the Linux terminal stuff (it's a text-based web browser that's really good).

Qemu should be on the list of virtualization tools.

Transmission should be first in the list of torrent programs, it's simple, easy to use and has a no-nonsense interface.

Tox should be on the list of chat programs.

DosBox should be added under gaming.

The Darling Project should be there somewhere too.

The Atom editor should be under development tools, and '(IDEs)' should be removed, because there are far more development tools than just IDEs.

  6. Police can confiscate a phone, they have legal right to do so, teachers are not people who enforce the law, that's why schools have police officers or liason officers. What the teacher did is illegal and infringes on the students privacy. If a teacher confiscates a phone etc, they should turn it off and lock it away. If what you're saying is the case, a teacher can take a phone containing private information or pictures and copy it and keep a hold of it outside of the law... So if OP's student friend has 200 dick pics he's been sending to the local bicycle and the teacher keeps them... well... need I say more?

It doesn't matter if it's right or not, the teacher is allowed to by law according to the law he linked that was passed in 2011
  7. If he did have a passcode, and the teacher asked him, and he gave the teacher the passcode, then he is in effect giving consent. However, the kid could then also argue that he was coerced.

If the teacher asks you for your passcode, just say no. If the teacher insists, straight up tell them "You do not have authority to make me divulge my passcode. The contents of that device are my personal property, and you accessing them without my consent or a court warrant violates my privacy, and the rights assured to be under UK law. Please do not ask again."

I'll ask him about it tomorrow
  8. PS: Do people not use passwords or fingerprint locks? I mean it's highly unsafe.

This is the best I've found so far:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1548273/What-a-teacher-can-do-and-cant-do.html

The cause is different (bullying vs an argument), but it specifically states that they should not search through text messages without permission. I would assume this extends to using the phone at all without consent.

Obviously consulting a Lawyer would be best, but I'm fairly certain that the teacher would need consent.

FYI, why did the kid not have a passcode on his lock screen?

Idk if he did or didn't have a passcode on his lockscreen
  9. So apparently, in my school a kid was made to give his phone to a teacher, the teacher then proceeded to go through his phone and copy all his stuff off of it. He did this because there was a fight and the teacher thought he'd have a recording of it or something, the teacher called the kids parents and told them he had been in 'gang related activities' (the kid's not in a gang and the teacher's already been warned about going round calling any group of kids a 'gang' before).

I'm angry that a teacher would do this anyways, but is it even legal?
