  1. A co-worker of mine is looking for a new machine to work on when he is not at the office and I offered my help. Originally he was going for a standard desktop, so I had a clear idea on what to get based on his needs, but now that he changed his mind and opted for a laptop instead I'm link a blank board (but I couldn't say no when I saw him looking at a $3000 Alienware laptop!) He is a graphic designer and will be going to use photoshop heavily, but he would also like a good looking laptop that can last more than few hours and have a decent size screen. Based on his needs I was thinking about a laptop with a good fourth generation i7, 16GB of RAM (do they make laptop with that much? if not 8GB instead) and a decent GPU (he will not be gaming with, I was thinking something like a 650M just for the computational power). What do you guys say? Am I looking for the right specs? As I said, I have no experience with laptops so I would really appreciate if you could link me to possible candidates. I'll link this topic to him so he can read it, but I'll be the one mediating for him (he doesn't read/write English as fast as me). Thank you in advance, I apologize for my English.
  2. Thank you, I expected this answer based on my research but I tried anyway. Unfortunately I've been asked to set up the RAID with the already available HDD (WD Green) even if I reported that there could have been issues with them (the "power saving" properties of the green WD could cause problems with the RAID). They expect me to set up a beefy setup but the moment there is a cent to pull out of their wallet they say no (we don't even have a RAID controller, just a 60€ mobo =/ )
  3. The RAID I set up will be used to store the backup of very sensible (and valuable) data, I've been asked to stress the system out to make sure that from the moment that the data in transferred in it we will not need to do anything other than the usual maintenance.
  4. I currently have 4 3TB HDD in RAID 5, is there any software to stress test the configuration? I tried GSmartControl but it lets me test the individual drives, not the RAID itself. Thanks in advance.
  5. I changed it with an Audio-Technica AT2020, it's has pretty good quality for being an usb mic, but for what I am using it for one with xlr connection is usually better.
  6. I heard that by changing the motherboard you can run into some issue, especially if you are changing the motherboard. Would this also be true if I changed it with the same model? Also, the machine currently has a raid 1 configuration, would this translate in additional problems? The system will be formatted pretty soon for installing windows server 2012 so it's not that big deal, I was wondering if I can change the motherboard already or if I will have to do so the moment of the wipe (I would prefer the first case if possible, otherwise I wouldn't be asking). I apologize for my English.
  7. India's per capita income is $1219, which is around ₹74310.24 (Indian Rupees). This means that Battlefield 4 new price is over half of the average monthly wage... *facepalm* ...Are they dumb or what?
  8. I would place my money on Valve announcing (again) that Dota 2 will be soon in open beta (even if I'm pretty sure that anyone signed on steam has 10 keys for it by now) http://blog.dota2.com/2013/06/transitioning-into-launch-mode/
  9. I'm not sure you understand what you are talking about: it's ok to do the required investigations, but the moment a kid's house gets raided and him arrested without a single clue of what the truth is it isn't ok anymore. If you then consider the fact that they didn't find anything that could lead to the assumption that he had any kind of malevolent intention and yet he has been in prison for months the situation can be easily classified as obnoxious. The raid should have followed a minimal investigation and only if proven necessary, also the moment that it has been proven that he didn't have the means nor the intentions to fulfil what he said he should have been fined instead of closed in prison for months. Maybe it's just me not understanding how the situation is in the US, I never lived in a police state after all. I apologize for my English.
  10. Currently I own a Fiat Grande Punto (picture not mine): Two years ago I sold this one (my photo):
  11. it's nice to hear that the connection I pay 35€ per month is almost a 1/3 of the average in the rest of Europe. I would like having 2mb/s in upload instead of >400kb/s without having to pay over 60€ per month -.- (which I can't get anyway thanks to the lack of fibre)
  12. the problem is that the actual connectors (small metallic plates) came out/got bent/are broken as well D:
  13. I have a problem, after I tested various HDD to see if they were working I went to disconnect the cable (old one, didn't have the "clip" you press to release it) and the sata connector came right off the motherboard. I also noticed that it didn't just came off, but that the actual connectors were bent or plain broken. I am about to install 4 new 3TB HDD to the machine but I now have only 3 connectors available instead of 4. Something I would also like to point out is that the machines already has two HDD in RAID connected to the intel's controller. How should I proceed? my intention is to change the mobo, would this require any additional work other than just connecting everything to it? Will I need to get the exact same model or any will do?
