  1. I used LTT videos and Professor Messer videos, along with the necessary books, to help me study and pass my A+ and Network+ tests. It's getting to the point where you don't need to go to a college. Get a book or two from Barnes & Noble, watch some YouTube videos, practice on a couple of old computers, and then take the test.
  2. I'm now impressed with the LG G6 phone and battery. I'm 33 hours into its current charge and the phone is at 36%. I have all but a couple of the same apps from the previous phone, and I still use it as much as I did with my past phones. I even watched several YouTube videos on it and used the phone as a Hotspot for a couple hours last night.
  3. At the end, the port on my LG G4 was iffy at best when making a secure connection for charging or data transfer. And of course after 2 years the battery on the LG G4 drained a lot faster and took longer to charge. Granted I could have replaced the battery but I was getting ready to buy a new phone. Now my concern is that the new LG G6 does not have a removable battery. So I'm trying to be proactive, taking care of the new phone and battery.
  4. **Overnight cell phone Wireless Charging** I've always plugged in the provided cable and left my cell phone charging overnight. But are there any disadvantages to overnight Wireless Charging? I know a wireless charging pad can be slower, which is fine because I would use it overnight. But what about Heat or Decreased Battery Life? I just got a LG G6 and it's only disadvantage is the battery cannot be removed and replaced. So I'm slightly concerned about wearing out my battery too soon. If wireless charging is no more of a problem than the good old fashion USB power cord then I won't worry about it. Have you used a Wireless Charging Pad for your phone? And if so what are the pros and cons you have experienced?
  5. On the heels of Scrapyard Wars season 5 I found this article on buying refurbished computer parts. Most of what is written is common sense. I just found it interesting. Article: The Best (and Worst) PC Parts to Buy Refurbished
  6. Judge: It's OK If Best Buy's Geek Squad Nerds Search Your PC for Illegal Content A judge presiding over a child pornography case that was set in motion in 2012 has ruled that users have no legal expectation of privacy when they hand over their computers to Best Buy's Geek Squad IT technicians. (synopsis) A Geek Squad technician working on a doctor's computer discovered a small thumbnail image containing a nude child. The file was discovered on the hard drives unallocated space, an area where a file was deleted but still exists until new data can write over it. The Geek Squad called the FBI and the doctor was arrested. The Judge decided that without the file's metadata there was no way to determine when the file was saved to the HDD, deleted, or where it came from. The judge ended up ruling to suppress all of the evidence. Read the entire story here. (MY THOUGHTS) Is it just me or does this sound like the Geek Squad employee went out of their way in order to find this file? Replacing an HDD and transferring files does not require you visually inspect each and every file.
  7. Except for the two hard drives the alienware media PC is still intact. I've wanted to do something with it or at least the case. I just have not gotten around to it.
  8. My brother-in-law's job is to maintain multi-million dollar homes. Every so often the owners offer him items they plan on throwing out. Furniture, pictures, gardening equipment, and sometimes computers and other tech. Knowing that I like to play and work on computers he sometimes offers me some of the technology. In 2013 my brother-in-law brought home a 2005 Alienware home theater PC that had been in storage for a few years. After opening the case I was surprised to see that the case and all the components inside were very clean. The OS was Windows XP Media Center. I was able to log in and upgraded the OS to Win 7. Unfortunately the system would shut down after running for about a half an hour. It turned out that the heat-sink was too small. And a bigger one would not fit in the case. I installed Ubuntu and with the lid off the computer would run just fine. In 2015 I was offered an unused desktop built by ZT Systems by another home owner. This one came with Windows 7. I later updated the OS to Win 10 and added a second HDD from the Alienware home theater PC. The desktop has an Intel i7 860 2.8Ghz, with 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz and an MSI H55M-E33(MS-7636) motherboard. Currently I use the ZT Systems Desktop as the family computer when someone wants to get onto the Internet or do some homework.
  9. It has been great and a little bit of a problem at the same time. A few months ago Jaydon figured out, on his own, how to screen mirror his Android to the TV via the Roku. They screen mirror at his school so Jaydon played with his device until he figured it out. Jaydon loves to explore and learn all the different devices in the house. Besides the old Android phone he also plays with an iPad 3 and a iPod Touch. But at the same time he cannot seem to go 5 minutes without picking up a device. We sometimes have to put everything away for the day. At 6-years-old you can imagine, Jaydon can get upset. But luckily he gets over it quick and looks for something else to do.
  10. My son used his Amazon gift card, a birthday present from his grandpa, to get a Smartwatch and a yellow Bluetooth speaker. He loves technology.
  11. Switching to 60GHz, quote from the article... As more home electronics connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, there could be a very real need for the 60GHz spectrum to clear up congestion and fix capacity issues. The Wi-Fi Alliance projects that by 2021 more than 32 billion Wi-Fi devices will ship worldwide, up from a projected 2.8 billion in 2016. Not every device will require bandwidth or latency that rivals a wired connection, but for those that do, WiGig and the 60GHz band may become the wireless spectrum of choice. - See more at: https://www.computerpoweruser.com/article/24165/state-of-the-art-standards-wigig#sthash.6ySRkVnX.dpuf
  12. WiGig, also known as 802.11ad, is a wireless networking standard developed in 2009 that’s always offered promise with huge bandwidth and low latency. Up until recently, the standard’s downsides, such as the inability to penetrate walls and short effective range (up to 33 feet), have severally limited its use. But there’s new hope for WiGig, thanks to potential applications in VR and AR headsets, wireless docking stations, streaming devices, and wireless displays. 13. I use Speccy and CCleaner on my PC, and CCleaner on my Android. I've never had a problem and like the clean easy to read GUI on both.
