The die is huge. All of the upcoming 12 to 18 core Skylake-X SKUs will have this same physical die size The die and surface transistors around the die look untouched by the delidding process iPhone 8 costs higher due to Samsung controlling OLED, no touch ID due to 3D Touch Source 1: posted by RedRound2 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/831713-iphone-8-costs-higher-due-to-samsung-cotrolling-oled-no-touch-id-due-to-3d-touch/ Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/06/kgi-iphone-oled-samsung-touch-id/ The new iPhone’s display is expected to include a flexible OLED panel, an OLED touch panel, a 3D Touch module, and an OLED panel module. BUT Samsung will be responsible for providing each OLED part- with the only exception in the stack being the 3D Touch module. Normally, Apple leverages multiple supplies, keeping costs lower and ensuring enough supply. This time, Samsung is the only supplier. The OLED unit is estimated to cost $120-$130 per screen versus the $45-$55 unit cost of LCD panels. This could explain the expected price tag of around $1,000 ALSO While Apple was originally aiming to embed Touch ID under the display this is rumoured to be cancelled since OLED creates an unfavorable scan-through performance for the fingerprint sensor. In place of Touch ID Apple is expected to rely on facial recognition features and old school typed passwords on the new high end iPhone. Rapid Fire Intel discontinues the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K Source 1: posted by XenosTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/831866-intel-discontinues-the-core-i7-6700k-and-core-i5-6600k/ Source 2: https://techreport.com/news/32513/intel-discontinues-the-core-i7-6700k-and-core-i5-6600k Intel just issued a Product Change Notification that lays out the End of Like schedule for four sixth-generation CPUs: the Core i3-6098P, Core i5-6402P, Core i5-6600K, and Core i7-6700K. Intel will be taking orders for these chips through March 30 of 2018 and shipping them through to September 2018. It's possible Intel is discontinuing these Skylake models to keep them from taking up fab space that could be used for many-core Skylake-X processors and other 14nm+ products Don’t cry, Kaby Lake processors are compatible with almost all of the same hardware as Skylake chips and offer an updated video engine and slightly higher clock rates. HTC's Vive is off the table as Vive was spun out of its parent company last year and now exists as a standalone subsidiary Google’s incentive: Their burgeoning hardware business and its struggles to mass-produce its own hardware. There's also mention of Google's desire to integrate its software with hardware in a way similar to how Apple "owns" all parts of its business. HTC’s bargain prices! AI has better Gaydar than you Source 1: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/08/a-i-can-detect-the-sexual-orientation-of-a-person-based-on-one-photo-research-shows.html Artificial Intelligence can now accurately identify a person's sexual orientation by analyzing photos of their face, according to new research conducted at Stanford From ONE photo The machine intelligence could correctly infer between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% of the time for women. In contrast, human judges correctly identified the orientation of men 61% of the time and 54% of the time for women. When the AI reviewed five images of a person's face the results were even more convincing – 91% accurate for men and 83% for women. The researchers suggest the software was able to find subtle differences in facial structure between gay and straight people gay men and women typically had "gender-atypical" features and expressions. A person's "grooming style" also factored into the algorithm, essentially suggesting gay women appeared more masculine and vice versa. The researchers behind the study argued that with the appropriate data sets, similar AI tests could spot other personal traits such as an individual's IQ or even their political views. The research has prompted critics to question whether the technology could be used to violate a person's privacy. Now, code in Facebook’s ad manager has been found that lets businesses buy ads with a “Send WhatsApp Message” button built in. For now, WhatsApp isn’t selling ads on its own app, but testing a WhatsApp chat button on Facebook ads that directly opens a conversation with a business in WhatsApp. Facebook: “We’re testing a new way for people to start a chat with a business in WhatsApp from a Facebook ad. This makes it easier for people to connect with businesses that they care about on WhatsApp.” Businesses will only be able to contact WhatsApp users that have agreed to be messaged by initiating the conversation. Sponsored messages work the same way on Facebook Messenger: businesses can pay to reconnect with people they’re already chatting with. WhatsApp initially promised not to show ads when it was acquired by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014. Kalashnikov Unveils New Anti-Drone Weapon Source 1: http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-06/kalashnikov-unveils-new-anti-drone-weapon Source 2: VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=ffOZMTVeM70 Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov, makers of the AK series, has developed an advanced anti-drone gun called the REX-1. “This radiomagnetic ‘gun’ suppresses the command and control channels of the world’s most commonly encountered drones. It’s equipped with a number of interchangeable electromagnetic and infrared units that suppress GSM, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and other channels, rendering drones inoperable It’s possible to change each component in a matter of seconds, just like changing the magazine on an assault rifle. Once disrupted, most drones will automatically either return to their start point or land where they are. Due to its ability to block phone signals, REX-1 can also be used to prevent remote detonation of improvised explosives REX-1 is able to “fire” continuously for four hours. It can then be recharged for four hours using an ordinary 220-volt socket, or it can be connected to an additional battery for uninterrupted use. Lawsuit: Amazon sold eclipse glasses that cause “permanent blindness” Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/08/lawsuit-amazon-sold-eclipse-glasses-that-cause-permanent-blindness/ A South Carolina couple claims that Amazon sold defective eclipse-watching glasses that partially blinded them during the historic coast-to-coast solar eclipse on August 21. The couple says that because of the eyewear purchased from Amazon, they are now suffering from "blurriness, a central blind spot, increased sensitivity, changes in perception of color, and distorted vision." Amazon issued a recall of defective and perhaps counterfeit eclipse eyewear in an e-mail sent out to customers before the event. According to the lawsuit: "Amazon’s August 19, 2017 e-mail 'recall' was tragically too little, too late. Its e-mail notification was insufficient to timely apprise customers of the defective nature of their glasses, and resulted in Plaintiffs and members of the proposed class using defective Eclipse Glasses," The suit also demands unspecified monetary damages, punitive damages, and legal fees and costs.

The 49-year-old is accused of giving donations worth $36m to non-profit foundations operated by a friend of South Korea's former President in return for political favours. Prosecutors said the donations were made to win government support for a big restructuring of Samsung that would strengthen Lee's control over Samsung Electronics. Lee, who denied all charges, had faced a jail sentence of up to 12 years. Lee had been detained since February on a string of corruption charges including bribery, embezzlement and hiding assets overseas. Laidlaw’s “Epistle 3” is a letter from a fictional character named “Gertie Fremont,” who recounts her team-up with feisty partner “Alex Vaunt” (Alyx Vance) to find the “Hyperborea” (Borealis) luxury liner, which must be destroyed or captured from the evil “Disparate” (Combine) aliens While Laidlaw’s blog quickly faltered under the weight of traffic, someone posted the whole thing on Pastebin with the original names and genders swapped back in, resulting in a coherent and plausible plotline for Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the announced but never-released conclusion to Half-Life 2’s story arc. We have no way of knowing whether this was a final plotline or just some loosely developed ideas, but Laidlaw was the primary architect of Half-Life’s plot, and his departure from Valve last year was widely seen as an acknowledgment that Episode 3 was dead.

The teenagers were asked to wear a Fitbit Charge wristband for eight weeks; to use the Fitbit app; and to take part in surveys and focus groups, before and after the trial period ended, responding to questions about how they felt about exercising and using the device. The researchers record an initial “novelty” bump in interest in physical activity among some participants “for the first few weeks”, but by the end participants overall reported feeling less confident about their competence at exercising, and ultimately discouraged from doing so “It was consistently reported that after about 4 weeks pupils became bored with the Fitbit,” the researchers write. “This evidence suggests that though the Fitbit serves to promote physical activity, for the pupils in this study, the Fitbit may have only produced modest and short-term effects.” Why? Fitbit’s non-personalized 10,000 steps per day target was cited as an unfair and pressurizing goal — generating feelings of guilt or lack of ability among users, which in turn acted as a disincentive for exercising. Study participants also reported feeling like they had less choice over how to engage in physical activity Pressure from competition with peers, encouraged in an in-app leaderboard also ultimately negatively impacted participants’ motivation to exercise. “Competition, peer comparison and social comparison to normative predetermined targets result in only short-term motivational effects.” Gamers Nexus tests Noctua fan rumors. Car Wash Hack Can Trap Passengers, Douse Them With Water Source 1: posted by hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/813743-proof-of-concept-car-wash-hack-can-strike-vehicle-trap-passengers-douse-them-with-water/ Source 2: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/bjxe33/car-wash-hack-can-smash-vehicle-trap-passengers-douse-them-with-water A group of security researchers have found vulnerabilities in internet-connected drive-through car washes that would let hackers remotely hijack the systems to physically attack vehicles and their occupants. The vulnerabilities would let an attacker open and close the bay doors on a car wash to trap vehicles inside the chamber, or strike them with the doors, damaging them and possibly injuring occupants. "We believe this to be the first exploit of a connected device that causes the device to physically attack someone An attacker can send an instantaneous command to close one or both doors to trap the vehicle inside, or open and close one door repeatedly to strike the vehicle a number of times as a driver tries to flee. The systems run on Windows CE and have a built-in web server that lets technicians configure and monitor them over the internet The researchers became interested in car washes after hearing about an accident that occurred years ago where technicians misconfigured one in a way that caused the mechanical arm to strike a minivan and douse the family inside with water The driver damaged the vehicle and car wash as he accelerated quickly to escape. Software-based safety mechanisms prevent the doors from closing on vehicles, and the arm from hitting vehicles normally, but they were able to disable these. The project doesn’t involve rewiring the physical grid, he explains; it just tweaks how electricity is bought and sold. consumers will set the price they’re willing to pay for different types of energy, including community-produced solar. The "Flow Acceleration Channels" on the blades of the Taiwan fans are much more defined than the channels on the made in China fans; the channels on the Chinese fans are barely raised from the blades. The "Inner Surface Microstructures" of the made in Taiwan fans have a distinct waterdrop shape, whereas the made in China fans just have a shallow triangular cutout. The "Stepped Inlet Design" is sharp and distinct in the fans made in Taiwan, whereas the Chinese fans are rounded and less cut out. There is a noticeable difference in frame color. The problem with the difference is that the fans do not match the other Noctua case and CPU cooler fans in the 3 builds that I am putting together, as all the other fans were made in Taiwan. The made in China fans have a noticeably louder drone when spinning at the same RPM as the other fans. Google delivers Street View of the International Space Station Source 1: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/google-iss-space-1.4212807 Now anyone can move through the modules of the space station using Google Maps or Google Earth. The 360-degree view inside the space station is courtesy of NASA and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who spent four months taking pictures inside the station. A special camera setup was required: two bungee cords, stretched in a cross pattern from top to bottom and side to side of the space station was used for each shot. With the camera anchored in the cross of the two cords, Pesquet rotated it to all the angles needed, hovering well behind the camera so he was not casting a shadow in the image. Some are speculating that Musk may have gotten the sign-off from White House senior advisor (and Trump son-in-law) Jared Kushner’s office of American Innovation, which has expressed interest in the hyperloop. Source 1: https://medium.freecodecamp.org/a-hacker-stole-31m-of-ether-how-it-happened-and-what-it-means-for-ethereum-9e5dc29e33ce An unknown attacker exploited a critical flaw in the Parity multi-signature wallet on the Ethereum network, draining three massive wallets of over $31,000,000 worth of Ether in a matter of minutes. Given a couple more hours, the hacker could’ve made off with over $180,000,000 from vulnerable wallets. Spotting trouble, a group of benevolent white-hat hackers from the Ethereum community rapidly analyzed the attack and realized that there was no way to reverse the thefts, yet many more wallets were vulnerable. Time was of the essence, so they saw only one available option: hack the remaining wallets before the attacker did. To prevent the hacker from robbing any more banks, the white-hats wrote software to rob all of the remaining banks in the world: $150,000,000. Once the money was safely stolen, they began the process of returning the funds to their respective account holders. The people who had their money saved are now in the process of retrieving their funds. this was not a flaw in Ethereum or in smart contracts in general. Rather, it was a developer error in a particular contract. Which in 98% of cases just meant laying ontop of them cuddling and scratching and petting to distract them from her trimming their nails. Had a corgi, standard poodle, great dane growing up and my parents currently have a chihuahua - I'll have my own eventually but I don't have enough time to give a dog a fair amount of love at the moment.

There’s barely any room for enthusiasts to overclock. Also, many motherboards limit Skylake-X CPUs further due to poor design choices, such as insufficient VRM cooling. The new headset will have a similar interface to Samsung’s VR Gear and can be controlled by a wireless remote. Facebook plans to power the product with a Snapdragon mobile chip from Qualcomm The device’s gaming power is superior to that of the Gear VR, but unlike the powerful Rift device, will not include positional tracking technology. This means that the device won’t be able to tell where its user is spatially A future version of the product will have that technology The company plans to begin briefing content makers on the device by October The downloads store will be re-written and accessible from the virtual reality interface itself Oculus has plans to enlist China’s Xiaomi and its network of contract manufacturers to produce the new headset for global distribution Facebook has said it’s also working on a prototype device code-named Santa Cruz that’s basically a wireless Rift, with the full power of the original device sans PC. 18. You realize that video was a joke? - Not trying to prod, genuine question.. A lot of people seem to have missed that. There is obviously value in a purchase like that. There's a lot more to video quality than resolution.
  19. Production quality increase for every single video we shoot + not having lower quality than many competing channels vs producing one video which would have been interesting 1 year ago but most people don't care now.. So it's already cost us more money than it would make even if we didn't have to take travel time, plane cost, hotel cost, etc into consideration for a small team in order to do so.

Hackers breaching US Nuclear Plants Source 1: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/06/technology/nuclear-plant-hack-report.html Source 2: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40538061 Since May, hackers have been penetrating the computer networks of companies that operate nuclear power stations and manufacturing plants in the United States and abroad. Hackers wrote highly targeted emails containing fake résumés for engineering jobs and sent them to the senior industrial control engineers who maintain access to critical industrial control systems. Once the recipients clicked on the resumes, attackers could steal their credentials and proceed to other machines on a network. Hackers breached at least a dozen US power plants in attacks in May and June There is no indication that hackers were able to jump from their victims’ computers into the control systems of the facilities, nor is it clear how many facilities were breached. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said, “There is no indication of a threat to public safety, as any potential impact appears to be limited to administrative and business networks.” The origins of the hackers are not known. But the report indicated that an “advanced persistent threat” actor was responsible, which is the language security specialists often use to describe hackers backed by governments. The hackers’ techniques mimicked those of the organization known to cybersecurity specialists as “Energetic Bear,” the Russian hacking group that researchers have tied to attacks on the energy sector since at least 2012. OneDrive has stopped working on non-NTFS drives Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/803622-microsoft-onedrive-now-only-works-with-ntfs-drives/ Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/07/onedrive-has-stopped-working-on-non-ntfs-drives/ With its latest update, Microsoft's OneDrive no longer works with anything other than disks formatted with the NTFS file system File systems such as FAT32, exFAT, and ReFS will now provoke an error message when OneDrive starts up. To continue to use the software, files will have to be stored on an NTFS volume. While FAT disks can be converted, ReFS volumes must be reformatted and wiped. NTFS is the default file system in Windows, but people using SD cards to extend the storage on small laptops and tablets will typically use exFAT. People using Storage Spaces to manage large, redundant storage volumes will often use ReFS. The company's position is that OneDrive should always have warned about these usage scenarios and that it's only a bug or an oversight that allowed non-NTFS volumes to work. RED announces...a phone? Windows 10 to combat ransomware by locking up your data Source 1: posted by hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/801264-windows-10-build-16232-will-try-to-combat-ransomware-by-locking-up-your-data/ Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/06/windows-10-will-restrict-data-access-to-authorized-apps-to-combat-ransomware/ The latest Windows 10 build includes a trial of a new anti-ransomware capability Ransomware has posed a new risk: it’s not that another user will change all your files but rather that a program operating under a given user's identity will modify all the data files accessible to that user identity. Microsoft's attempt to combat this is called "Controlled folder access," and it's part of Windows Defender. Certain directories can be designated as "protected," with certain locations, such as Documents, being compulsorily protected. Protected folders can only be accessed by apps on a whitelist Qualcomm trying to ban the sales of Iphones in the US Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/803742-qualcomm-trying-to-ban-the-sales-of-iphones-in-the-us/ Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/6/15930928/qualcomm-requests-iphone-import-ban Source 3: Infographic https://www.qualcomm.com/iphone-infographic In the latest escalation of its global legal fight with Apple, Qualcomm is asking the US government to ban new iPhones from coming into the country. It also wants sales halted on iPhones that have already made their way in. Qualcomm says that Apple is violating six patents that have to do with extending a phone’s battery life. “Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s technology while refusing to pay for it.” Apple claims that Qualcomm is charging “disproportionately high” fees for the use of its patents and abusing its position as the market leader in smartphone modems Huge dome reads inhabitants’ body language Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/07/cmu-researchers-create-a-huge-dome-that-can-read-body-language/ Source 2: The Panoptic Studio is a new body scanner created by researchers at Carnegie Mellon that will be used to understand body language in real situations The dome contains 480 VGA cameras and 31 HD cameras as well as 10 Kinect sensors. It can create wireframe models of participants inside the dome interacting, talking, and arguing. Why? To show computers what we are thinking. “We communicate almost as much with the movement of our bodies as we do with our voice,” said associate professor Yaser Sheikh. “But computers are more or less blind to it.” The computer can look at the various hand and head positions and verbal communication, and begin to understand when two people are angry, happy, or argumentative. “A single shot gives you 500 views of a person’s hand, plus it automatically annotates the hand position,”
