  1. IS there a way to put it on improperly?
  2. I currently own an MSI x99s SLI mobo. Very happy with it so far, except for one large issue. I don't think that I've gotten SLI working properly yet. In my current setup I have my two gtx 970s in PCI slots 1 and 3. Problem there being that my top card cannot breathe, and constantly runs up to 75* when gaming, fans at max duty. It's loud, and hot, and I don't like it, so I want to move it down to slot 5, like so, except that when I do things go a little wonky. For one thing, multimonitor support vanishes, and everything will refuse to detect my other displays. When I attempt to open up nvidia control panel to try to fix it, even more crap happens. I've tried a few things to date. I've updated my bios to the most recent version, I've switched the position of the cards (top one goes on bottom, bottom one is on top, just a desperate attempt) and I've tried using the bottom card as the one that outputs displays. All are to no avail, except using the bottom card as the output card. When I do that, I get multi monitor support back, except it recognizes 4 displays instead of my 3. I still also get the "Display settings not available error". I've done this multiple times, so I'm sure I have all cables plugged in and what not. I'm stuck guys. Help. Pics of working builds using setup I want: http://i.imgur.com/CCLNMGU.jpg, http://i.imgur.com/WwRKEYK.jpg I've also attached the useful pages of my manual that deal with this issue. It's all my manual has regarding this issue.
  3. I've looked, but it's the longest one I have. This is a secondhand unit, so maybe the original owner is keeping the longer one for himself. Either way, I may order some custom sleeved cables soon anyways.
  4. I wish I could hide it, but in order for it to reach I have to take a straight line from PSU to connector on mobo, and that means its right across my case.
  5. Final Update: The cables were the issue. I replaced all the cables, including the sata ones, and its now working. Thanks for all the help guys. One last thing while we're on the topic: Where can I get some 8 pin male to male cpu power cables? The one i got is like a foot and a half, and there is no way I can just leave it in the state it is in.
  6. That could be the problem. I'm using the mobo, CPU, and PCIe cables that came with it, but all the sata cables are the ones that came with my corsair one. I'll put it back in though.
  7. Update: I did the paperclip test, survived without setting anything on fire, and the PSU started up just fine. Fan spun, no smoke, no noise. Where do I go from here?
  8. Heh, I bought the thing off craigslist, but it should still be under warranty. I'll give the paperclip thing a try, thanks.
  9. I got a new PSU so I could go SLI on my rig, so I get everything settled and in its new home, and I power it up when nothing good happens. Fans started spinning, then there was almost a click, and PC stopped booting. No big deal, maybe there is a short in one of the fans. I was playing around trying to get the 8 pin connector out of the case, maybe the wires frayed. I disconnected all the fans, tried again, but now there was just the clicking noise. I tried booting with only one video card connected, but the same thing happened. Just a clicking noise then nothing. I double checked all the connectors, and sure enough, everything was in good and tight. As a last resort, I went back to my old power supply, running the original card and everything, and thank goodness, everything still works 100%. So, did I just waste $120 bucks? The new power supply I got was a Silverstone SST-ST85F-gs, and my current one is a Corsair CX 500M.
  10. Can you mix and match RAM? If so, I'll cannibalize some old computers for more RAM. We have a few laying around. There are at least 2 500gb spare HDDs in my house.
  11. I suggested a GPU, and she said she would consider one down the line when she has more money. I looked real quick, but there was nothing good for $250 that had an i3 and a reputable power supply. Plus this way she learns something and can easily upgrade in the future. Thats online, I found it at fry's for $50. http://www.frys.com/product/7867799?
  12. So my sister wants a new computer. I agree with her, she currently has an HP pavilion slimline with an AMD semperon and god knows what else in there. She mainly wants a new computer for photo editing and general school work. I've convinced her that the cheapest thing to do is to build her own, and she's agreed and given me a budget of $250. Oh. So I went ahead and cooked up a quick build: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/crazikyle/saved/#view=WPYhP6 How would this work for her? Would it be reasonably "fast"? I don't need it to play any games, just boot up, and launch programs in a reasonable amount of time, as well as not constantly hang up or just be slow as molasses. HDD and OS are not needed.
  13. Thats where the problem comes in, I'm absolutely incompetent at OC'ing. I could never dream of getting 4.7-5 GHz out of my 8320 with my skill set. But maybe I should learn, and save myself $300. Saying that makes it seem like I really should learn. Yeah, I'll do that instead.
  14. I have a Corsair cx 500M PSU, and just got a line on an insane deal on a 9590. I currently have an 8320 and strix 970, OC'd to 1213 mv. I probably can't get a new mobo and this CPU with my current psu, right? Rest of specs: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 120GB Sandisk SSD 8 GB A-Data RAM @1600 MHz New mobo I'd get would be a Gigabyte Ga-990FXA-UD3
  15. I think it would be cool if they took a ps4 or xbone + a few games, and sold those to get a budget. Then they would either have to match or beat the performance of the ps4 + xbone.
