mnemonicman's Achievements

  1. Cirrus Logic 2MB. First I bought with my own money was a ATI Radeon 7200 64MB.
  2. Given the dearth of RX Vega anything right now the RX 580 does look good at least to me. If just using open source drivers on Linux then the only viable choice is RX 580. Though I'd be hard pressed to pay more than $300-350 for a RX 580. Even the 4GB version.
  3. 4K video capture looks good. Now if only I had a 4k monitor to view the 4k video captured on the S6 edge+.
  4. Good to know. Figured I'd ask around before I mark it up with a sharpie.
  5. Might be a silly question but will the ink from a felt tip marker, like a sharpie, impact heat transfer in any way on the heatspreader? Having just cleaned up old thermal paste on my i7 3820 the stenciling is flat gone. On the plus side it is now slightly shinier. The old paste was IC Diamond. Just getting it ready for a new heatsink.

  7. Wouldn't mind building a wall mounted PC with this CPU.
  8. It's totally possible. I've done it myself. But I don't really recommend it. At the very least don't do it with 3/4"OD 1/2" ID tubing.
  9. Going with Nvidia next because Linux. And because Asus has a 780 with a built in waterblock. Loved my watercooled 7970 but it's time for a change.
  10. If OP hasn't decided yet I would suggest going with another 7970/280X if you have to buy a card sooner rather than later. Crossfire 7970 should be faster than one 290X. Though looking at the PC specs in @LtRoyalShrimp I would also suggest upgrading the PSU as well. 760W should be enough but it would be nice to have a bit of extra wattage available just in case.
  11. So I have had my PC built and running for several months as shown here. But as things are working perfectly I now want to change things up. I have a dual D5 serial pump top from EK with two D5 strong pumps (one from Dazmode and the other from an older build) and would like to use that instead of the tiny ddc pump that is somehow louder than all the fans in the case. No funny sounds just loud-ish. Unfortunately I don't see a straightforward way to mount the pump with res attached upright like this. Is there a company that has made a bracket to mount this upright, or should I look to a different res/pump combo like the XSPC Photon 270? I'm told the D5 Vario pumps tend to be better than the D5 strong variant. Or better yet should I just hack something together with some spare metal and figure it out on my own?
  12. My first 7970, which was an HIS card, had artifacts and crashed the day I bought it. Exchanged it the next day for an MSI reference 7970 and it has been solid ever since. Still some coil whine but I wear headphones so it's not noticeable as much. I've seen cards from both companies die after a very short time. Might have just been a bad shipment of AMD cards if both cards ran poorly. It sucks but it happens.
  13. While I do have my heart set on at least one 290x it is good to see the EK 290x block fit on the 290. Still waiting on any benchmarks comparing the stock 290(X) to the watercooled variety. When you do get a chance post some benchmarks and temps.
  14. Price cuts only announced today so it'll be a week or three before I see any cheaper 780s out here in Winnipeg. However I'm going to wait a bit and see if any reviews of the 290x under water cooling surface. Either way we get titan level performance from cards less than $600.
