I've got a GTX 970 but I've got some friends who I'd love to have a decent chance to actually play video games as they're currently running on integrated gpu's the poor fools

Looking into making a NAS + possible media pc combo?
thedarkmagi replied to thedarkmagi's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
I was like last week tying the system to check if it worked by just running a bootable copy of linux from a usb and I could play at least 1 1080p video I may have also been playing a 720p video at the same time with no problem, I can't remember if I was running that many video instances before I tested a gpu which also needed testing at the point. Oh that makes sense, guess I'll have to look into it, the chromecast's a friends so I've never used one before -

well this motherboard does actually have hdmi thus why I keep bringing it up. but I could just cast straight to a chrome cast from the nas or would I need to use like the plex app from a phone and cast via that? -

so if I were to run a NAS like that with FreeNAS and plex. I assume the raspberry pi would effectively be the device that outputs the media onto a display so if I had like a chromecast would I be able to use that instead? or just output straight from the NAS onto a tv via hdmi or am I unable to do that? -

prior to this I wanted a NAS that was also able to browse the web and be able to play it's own files on the tv that would be connected to it via hdmi or whatever. but it's becoming clear that is this quite a challenge if I wanted to use this older hardware and due to my own lack of knowledge I believe I've been overambitious trying to do this entirely with a single system. I'm thinking I'll have to run plex on the nas OS as that seems like that it'll be the most cost efficient way to go about it. -

okay then, so what about 720p streams as thats normally the content I watch? also I assume I'd want to set up the nas with something like freenas and then add plex onto that? not that I have any idea how. -

Oh thats somewhat disappointing I have to say, is that due to the low clock speeds as it's an old quad core or simply the graphical power not being high enough on either the cpu or motherboard? -

Okay, so ignoring the power consumsion of the hardware I currently have would that be able to run 4 1080p streams? -

oh okay, well I'd certainly like my nas to be able to stream up to 4 pc's/devices at 1080p. although I don't really know how much that would realistically require. or what the sort of costs would be to purchase a system that could do that even while looking at cheap stuff -

I mean seeing as I already have these components and I'm not exactly sure what i'd buy instead for this power saving magic? as I still need to buy a PSU and HDD's for the system anyway. what would you suggest that I purchase then? -

well this is a quad core processor so thats a plus and I'm sure getting another 2x2gb of ddr2 ram won't be difficult, I'm not even sure if this cpu has integrated I believe it's part of the motherboard? which is a Intel desktop board 2 Dg45id -
Hi Guys I'm looking into making a nas that also functions as a media pc for the living room. I have no idea if this is possible or the limitations of it but am hoping you guys will be able to help out or at least point me in the right direction. I'm currently considering using an old pc that has Intel core 2 q8200 and just sticking the 6gb of ddr2 ram I have lying about if I were to use this cpu I'd be using this Intel desktop board 2Dg45id for my motherboard. I don't know if this will be good enough. Well thanks in advance for any help you lovely people can offer me

Hi I just brought a ducky shine 3 with the US keyboard layout, I didn't think this would cause me issues as a UK resident. Well I was wrong turns out while keeping my input settings as UK I don't have access to the backslash key, so i was wondering if i could change these key caps or something so this keyboard worked exactly like a UK layout keyboard. Thanks a lot for any help
