Yeah I was thinking high clocks, low usage is usually triggered by something like video decoding, as its only using the video decode block so wont be high power or show an actual GPU load - unless you are looking at GPU decode.

Could be something silly like a Steam glitch decoding a video despite the window not being open, or as simple as the Windows desktop rendering.  AFAIK the instant you ask the GPU to do anything it will boost, as it can't know what you're doing or for how long, so boosting early and sustaining that boost longer than necessary would reduce the chance of latency from it clocking down and having to immediately clock back up again.  Ultimately its all happening so fast its kinda random if we can see it in the monitoring software or not, as those typically only take a snapshot every 1-2 seconds so its pure luck if it happens to be during a boost period.

Its likely just a quirk of how the boosting works, something on the desktop rendered using GPU acceleration and momentarily caused the card to boost, but it didn't need all that GPU power so the usage remained low.  I'd only be concerned if GPU usage was high for long periods while idle.

I would be a little concerned that the gaming BIOS wont POST though, maybe that BIOS needs reflashing?

    Update again,

    The problem is solved.
The solution: I've made the mistake of reading the manual. The cable mod, riser+bracket that I bought did not mention, that the cable they sold with the kit was in fact a Gen3 cable. Asus, does not mention in their mother board manual, that setting the PCI-e behaviour to Auto does not in fact detect what type of device is plugged into it and instead default to Gen4. Meaning the only thing I had to do was go to the BIOS -> select Advanced -> Onboard device configuration (or something like that) -> Find the PCI-e slot I plugged the card in -> set it to Gen3, and voi-fckin-la, it works perfectly.

I'm gonna leave this here, hopefully some other helpless soul in a similar situation might stumble on it 😄

It only voids warranty if its a non-stock bios ( not from the manufacturer ). I've seen this in the past and I'm trying to remember what was causing it. I do write-ups on everything that comes into the shop so I'll dig that out and see what my findings were at the time.

This makes too much sense. So it could be a single stick tripping my system up? I did my research so as to buy memory that was compatible with my board and CPU. Should I figure out which one is bad and replace it? Buy a whole new kit?

Do you think intel will let you use z690/790 boards for a third time to try compete with amds longer socket support ?

or do what they did with z370 and change a few pins so it (aparently) won’t work

ECC support is basically the only notable difference between the E3 Xeons and regular i5s and i7s. (The integrated graphics are slightly faster on Xeons, but that just means it's a potato with racing stripes.) Desktop CPUs just sell in far greater numbers than low-end workstation CPUs.

The E5s are where the fun is. Once you step up to LGA1356 and LGA2011, you get more PCIe lanes, triple- and quad-channel registered ECC RAM support, multi-processor support, and dramatically higher core counts.

lopj245 reacted to An0maly_76 in No post
The BIOS update may be part of this (I've seen certain PCIe support removed to make room for other things), but I had similar issues with my 5900X build and a 3600X test bed due to RAM stability issues. The Ballistix I originally used was not QVL'd for either board used, and both had issues, some similar, some not so similar. The 5900X froze in sleep mode with random no video starts, crashes and shutdowns. The 3600X build just didn't seem to run quite right and showed a constant hourglass in Windows.

What told the tale was when I inserted the second DIMM in the test bed. Same no video-start I got with the other one. Replaced with kits using the same timings and voltage and both ran perfectly. Indications are that this was also an issue with another previous machine I have. Another kit of the same DIMMs, not QVL'd, and they register at different speeds. The machine has acted like a crack baby for two years now, and I think that's why.

QVL is a thing with Ryzen boards, despite what some say about "RAM is RAM". But don't be surprised if Windows 11 gives you even more issues after solving this problem.
