This was one of the cheapest Socket A boards that I saw on Ebay. And only missing the 40 conductor IDE cable. As luck would have it I have a lot of replacement 1500uf caps for the blown Sanyo (board should still post however):

Athlon XP 1800+ under the heatsink, and 1GB mismatched DDR400. One stick labelled "July 2003".

We had a little trade war with them not long ago,  they tried to stop buying our coal,  they went back to it after they realized they had no choice.   I feel a little more comfortable about our economy after that.

It'd be either the P4 650 or 651 since it's 3.4GHz and LGA775. If you are lucky it'll be the 651 - which is far better being 65nm. Either that or it is an engineering sample. Can't make heads or tales of the spec numbers - it shouldn't have double ups and should clearly say what model.

Edit: Bingo, clicked the image to view it closer and found it.

I've got the next model down somewhere - the 540J. Early (and worst) Prescott.

I am shocked. It's a Palomino Athlon XP with what appears to be all the mods. Whomever had this board and CPU knew what they were doing - went beyond what I can do:

Also means that the board+heatsink can handle my Duron 1300, and might be good for unlocking the L2 cache.

So I decided to put together an old system I had sitting around.  Everything in the build is dated from 2006 or 2007 except a pair of the noctua fans.  I just don't have any older fans that still work and even the cpu cooler is not sounding great but it just looks so cool sitting in there.  It boots into bios and it's detecting everything.  Now just to find my windows XP disk and see if I can load an OS on it.

    A-data DDr2 800mhz, 2x1gig sticks
EVGA Nvidia 8800GT video card. (single slot, woohoo)
    Antec Truepower II 550watt powersupply
    WD 250gig hard drive.

Neat old XP computer. $10US at a garage sale with a monitor and a few old games. Never get her running all the way but was booted into XP after an SSD upgrade and tinkered around... until it broke. I'll get around to restoring the OS someday but today is not that day. Fun toy though.

Dabombinable reacted to flibberdipper in Hot take: in 2024, 8GB of memory is enough for non-enthusiasts
On Windows? Not really. I see tons of PCs come in of varying age ranges with (typically) 4, 8, and 12GB configurations. The 4GB ones are always DOG slow, even though some of them are only a year or two old and would otherwise be fine with more RAM. 8GB (or I guess technically 6GB, but that doesn't exist with modern desktops or laptops) is really the lowest one would want to go, especially with Windows 11.

Modern Windows 11 tries to idle at like 4-5GB depending on how much shitware there is. When I got this laptop, after everything was settled in and it had time to calm down the lowest I ever saw RAM go was 5.2GB, and after a clean install of 11 I managed to shed anywhere from half to a full gig on that, depending how it feels that particular day.

One of the things I love about the 8TB Easystore I use for my Series X, which I'm pretty sure has an EMZZ in it, is how THONKY it is. I can feel it through my table.

I definitely do not recommend AMD's old Socket A stock coolers. This one made by AVC (appears to be a hybrid between 2 of their models for OEM) has a 60mm fan that spins at a bit over 4000rpm - and allows the Duron 1300's idle to eventually stabilise at 60o, and it to overheat and lockup under even light loads. The NOS Titan Cooler however...
    AVC:
    Titan:
Temperatures were the peak during CB2003's rendering - Duron 1300 is currently idling at 49oc. Drops to 43oc with the side panel off.
80mm fans really did (and still do) make a huge difference. Though a dinky heatsink with a 40mm fan spinning at 6600-7500RPM (depends on how much power a board can supply) does a better job than the AVC cooler.

Just found a pic of my college setup circa 2005.  Was during my tour of duty as part of the Disney College Program.  Hand-me-down desktop that I upgraded at the time as far as I could, Dual DVD-RW drives was particularly clutch in building my privateered DVD collection.  Also early WIFI.  Barely pictured to the side was of course the Playstation 2, DVD player, and VHS.

Unfortunately the weird 9500GT is ded, probably because of that shoddy cooling. That was kind of the interesting thing about this machine because there's a weird  back panel breakout with composite, S-Video and a footprint for a SCART connector that would have been fun to play with. PSU's dead too, so it's all going to the dump apart that mATX mobo and the Q6600/4GB of DDR2 on it and the DVD drive that work just fine (owner kept the HDD).

TBH with how bad Internet Explorer was, I'd be angrier at the software developer that thought it was a good idea to solely write their software with only IE in mind.

My mum has been frustrated several times by the goverment's education department having a lot of websites and software that still actively requires IE to function at all.
