It's great to have anything that makes intel and AMD have to compete with that market right? I may never buy one but if I get to buy a new low powered AMD laptop with a high powered GPU that's OK with me.

How can you question which OS the servers run without questioning what the purpose of the servers are? Servers aren't just boxes running an OS, they run applications that serve things and you have to pick which one runs the applications you have. If the answer is to virtualize the required OS then you still end up running Windows if it's virtual.

your last comment about SSH, there are a million ways to connect to servers remotely, if that's the only query as to why they are picking which OS that's kind of a weird, the point of their servers is you rarely interact with it directly unless something is being done TO the server by the server administrator not the users. Users perform their functions on their systems and it connects to the served function of the remote server. You don't just RDP to the remote server and use apps on it.

EricX2 got a reaction from LAwLz in Why the awful video titles?
I think the most obvious issue is that it's not "Youtube" that clickbait works on it's humans. Headlines in newspaper as long as there has been print have been written to get people to purchase the newspaper. Add in the algorithm that says "others like this so you will to" and you get the most views from the worst clickbait titles. It takes magic for something else to make a video go viral.

Now the issue I don't understand is why do we want to get people clicking videos that once they get past the "bait" they don't like or understand the content? If they stick to the demographic that is into computers their growth will plateau and that's a failure in a business. Meh, it's linus. If we want to understand him it should always be "what will get more views" and there is nothing wrong with that.

EricX2 got a reaction from Jason 57 in SURVEY What CPU/GPU combo do you use?
Seeing the discussion makes me ask one question, do people mostly buy their whole PC at once or piece by piece? I know they say wait until you can afford an entire pc so you end up with similar hardware but I have always carried over one or more piece of hardware when upgraded. I'm running AMD Ryzen 5 3600 upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1600 which is paired to a GTX 1070. The GTX 1070 was purchased when I was using my Intel i7 6700. And that was bought when I first had my GTX 780 which was an upgrade on my 3770 PC from a Radeon HD7870. I think it makes a big difference because each company has had generations of good/mediocre/horrible hardware.

EricX2 got a reaction from Ligonsker in Be careful when buying expensive things on eBay
Here is the thing, eBay isn't a store, it's a million stores. Every single one of them is run by a different owner. Every single one has a different set of morals and ethics and practices. The moral really is "be safe when buying stuff and make sure who are buying from someone who looks like they know what they are selling".

I may be alone but if I look at the description of a computer part and they can't even say what the specs are or have information that differs in the description vs the title vs the item specifics, I don't buy from them. If all that matches, there is a low chance that they are going to do all that work unless they want to stand by the item and their service.

Same with pictures. It's eBay, people should be selling items they have on hand (IMO), if all they are using are stock photos, I don't buy from them. So many drop shippers on eBay and when they do that you have no idea that what you buy is what you want. The person you buy from takes the order and goes to somewhere else and "maybe" buys the right thing and ships it to you?

Look on r/ebay, major sellers get fucked by Ebay so often over the smallest things. It's really quite sad and has made me never want to sell on Ebay.

The only times I can think of when Ebay sides with the seller is when there is an obvious scam from the buyer, the seller has plenty of evidence against them, and also the seller won a diceroll with Ebay because they're that sided with the buyer.

EricX2 got a reaction from flametwist in does apple switching to arm benefit other devices?
This has been said since the late 1990s when Microsoft was being hit with monopoly suits. Software support isn't the only thing holding up Linux. It's the fact that people use what their computers come with, majority aren't going to buy a computer then change the OS. And the fact is we're talking about ARM vs x86 anyway right? Are you thinking there will be lots of new ARM based computers popping up comparable to the new Apples or just that the Raspberry PI 400 will sell millions?

I'm unsure why a hardware company (Apple) making their own proprietary chips to run their own proprietary OS would do anything but make companies make their closed software run on it. That doesn't then mean they will re-code it to be "Windows ARM" and "Linux ARM". If they didn't do it for MAC x86/Linux x86 why would ARM change it?

Back in 2017 I built my Ryzen 5 1600 with an MSI B350M Gaming board, a Zotac GTX 1070 FE and 16gb of Corsair 2666 RAM, along with a 256gb intel m.2 NVME drive and a 1tb Samsung sata ssd all wrapped up in a rather outdated looking even at the time NZXT S340 case. After using that with some minor changes such as replacing the stock wraith cooler with a noctua cooler, I have finally upgraded. I kept the motherboard, GPU, but upgraded the CPU to a Ryzen 5 3600, RAM to Corsair 3600 and replaced my 256gb NVME SSD with a 1tb WD Black. Still in the same case. Still with the same cooler. Just popped out the old CPU, cleaned up the thermal paste and reapplied, then upgraded the RAM and SSD. I don't play games at all, so I have no interest in upgrading the GPU. The only reason I even have the 1070 is I bought it back when they were new and unless it stops working I can't imagine needing to replace it.

I still am impressed that it was just a drop in CPU upgrade (plus UEFI upgrade) and everything worked perfect (minus having to reactivate MS Office over the phone because it's a neW cOmPutER). The last time I had a motherboard and did a CPU upgrade was the Core 2 duo generation where I went from a E6300 to a E8400 in 2009. And by golly is it fast! I never felt like it was slow. I just knew from looking at benchmarks that it wasn't keeping up anymore. Honestly I think the 2666 RAM should have been upgraded a long time ago. No clue how much of a bottlenck that was. The RAM is now at 3600 and everything is so fast. Booting, launching apps, running scripts that took minutes before are instant or near. Just such a good upgrade for a few hundred bucks.

Anyway, I know from looking at other build logs this isn't too unique or anything but I have nobody else to share with. It's been even a few years since I was on these forums.

What's the deal with people complaining about too much power supply? Unless something is very wrong, it doesn't pull (much) more power from the wall than it has to put out right? It could be a 50kw PSU but if the hardware only requires 300w it'll only pull a little over 300w. Having the ability to pull out more doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't really require much more to be built. Not like they use 50 times the precious metal to build it. I literally don't understand why it needs to be even discussed.

Hey guys, just want to share my first build I have done.

    Case: Antec NX400
    MB: Gigabyte B550 Gaming X
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    GPU: Sapphire Pulse 5600 XT
    RAM: G.Skill 3200 (2x8Gb)
    PSU: Corsair CX650M
SSD: W.D Green 120Gb (For Windows only)
    HHD: Seagate Barracuda 1Tb

I Know I have some cable management to do. I built this PC while working away with limited resources. I already want to 90 degree USB 3.0 header, ATX and CPU power connectors as tight bends.
Now my first question is the case has a RGB front strip and came with a RGB fan at the rear. Colour is controlled by a Switch on front IO. Would there be a imbedded fan controller in the front IO? i can only see a couple of two pin cables going to the fan and wondering if I somehow replace it all to ARGB and control via Fusion or is there a way to connect existing to be run via Fusion.

    Cheers

Black Friday/Cyber Monday are just names of sales, not like it's an event stores have to register to be part of or sell specific items at specific discounts to be considered a black Friday/cyber Monday sale. Any store can call their sale Black Friday/Cyber Monday and any store can make their sales whatever they want as long as they compete. I'm sure some cases the prices are determined by the manufacturer which means any store will sell them for the same sale price at that point.

In the US "Black Friday" lasts about a week, so does "Cyber Monday".

Screwing down the cables might make it look neat, but it will be a huge pain in the ass if you ever need to add/remove/replace a cable. You made it easier to remove the switch (Velcro) than removing the cables (screws) for crying out loud.

It's almost like people don't understand what happens when you apply pressure to the heatsink. Spoiler, it spreads the thermal compound out as far as it can based on the amount not the shape. As long as you put the right amount and it's in the middle so it can spread the results will be the same.
