But to your original point, a 1080p source may look better on a 1080p tv.

In upscaling, the tv uses a "best guess" algorithm to fill in the extra pixels that aren't included in the source, whereas the 1080p tv will show it exactly the way the 1080p source (XBONE in your case) means it to be displayed.

Some cases that I have seen usually result in a blurry picture if upscaling is involved. Think of showing an old movie in 480p picture fullscreen on your 1080p computer monitor; it looks like a complete blurry mess. But if you recall how that picture may have looked on your 480p tv (clear and distinguishable) that may help you understand.

BUT (sry, cant just give you a straight answer now can I?)
if we are talking 4k vs 1080p, then there is a good chance you wont see any resolution above 1080p anyways. And all that extra resolution may be where the blurriness is, and your picture may look fine.

So while I don't agree with opting for 4k if you can get a tv of better quality or size, your source MIGHT appear 1080p on a 4k tv, though it would almost definitely look better (even if only a tad sharper) on a 1080p screen due to the absence of upscaling.

I would definitely hold out on the tv before you are sure that the XBONE will look good enough on the 4k tv; since it sounds like that is what you want it for most.

    BUT,
My opinion (and the popular opinion of most HDTV experts) is to save your money and just get a really good quality 1080p tv. 1- there wont be much mainstream 4k content other than youtube or some netflix series for at least a year or two, and 2- You won't visually be able to see a difference  (due to biology, it could be a 1600k image and your eyes wont percieve better than 1080) unless you are sitting closer than ~6 feet to the screen.

Not sure of your budget, but Vizio makes some of the best TVs for the money (60" E-series tv's for less than $1000), and may be more worth it for your budget than the LG (Vizio doesnt waste money on gimmicks like 3D or 4K so the image quality ends up better than the big brands in the same price range). Look up reviews and you will find most experts agree that the Vizio E-series was the best value in a tv in 2014.

I had a vizio E for two weeks until I decided I wanted the best tv money could buy and got a samsung f8500 plasma ($2600, way different budget than the $800 vizio lol). But the E-series was EXCELLENT and the best LED I had seen through my experimentation!

I have a thread here all about 4k, and if you read the OP and ignore the comments of 4k proponents who want to believe in 4k is worth it when it actually rarely is, then you could change your mind and maybe pick out a better quality or bigger tv.

    Check it out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/269209-4k-for-home-theater-and-why-you-may-not-need-it-long-read/

Not looking to start another 1080p vs 4k argument (see the above thread for that), just sharing my opinion hoping to get you a better tv

Just my $0.02, hope it helps

I am sort of thinking of getting one? mainly because when I watch TV (films) in the dark I get this horrible glare off it

Like line Lights blasting out from the TV. . . I'm not even sure if anyone else gets this as I've never asked?. . . my backlight for the TV is low (4 out of 20). . . Picture is calibrated good, but every now and then I have this urge to buy a gadget I don't really need, and I think a projector is the next obvious stage. . . Only thing is I want to keep my blu ray player, I assume I can a cable to it? but I've heard that HDMI cables longer than 2m aren't a good idea?

A TV's picture will beat a projectors because your seeing reflected light from a wall with the projector.

With a projector you'll need to invest in a screen or find a wall you can paint with special paint.

Plasma screens have less glare I imagine since blacks are actually black.

Buy and all-in-one unless you look for something in common. Maybe Pioneer, Focal, JBL or Onkyo and 5.1 is as good as it gets, 7.1 is pure nonsense.

I just bought a Denon 4311CI and I'm quite happy with it, it is capable of driving 9 channels internally and 11 with the use of external amp, further more, the amp is assignable. You could also jump to the 4520CI, you gain a few newer features but if all you want is 11 channel then I'd save the money and go with 4311. I've been out of the game for a while but I do believe Marantz also has a receiver capable of 11ch.

As for amps, Emotiva offers great price/performance. I've been eying one myself for quite some time.

For speakers, if what you currently have are decent, why not save money and just buy more of the current brand/line. If not, go audition speakers at a local store.

For Subs go with 12" or larger SVS, HSU, Rythmik or eD.

Unfortunately you're a little misinformed about HDTV technology. Plasma TV's don't work in the same way that LCD TV's do, thus, they don't have a traditional "refresh rate". the 600 Hz refers to the subfield drive, which is the part that charges (excites) the plasma cells inside the TV. They flicker at insanely high rates (600 times per second), hence why they are generally advertised as with a 600 Hz refresh rate. While it's not technically true, it's also much easier than trying to explain to a consumer what it means.

Also, Plasma TV's are fucking awesome. Hands down. I'd never buy a LCD (CCFL or LED) over a Plasma TV unless it was specifically to be used as a computer monitor, or you had a room that had direct sunlight with no curtains or other means of light control. Plasma TV's in my opinion (Esp. if you get a good one like a Panasonic VT or ST series or LG PA6500 series) just look much better to me. Plus they handle motion playback much better on average.
I own an LG 50PA6500 50" Plasma that is quite simply awesome looking, And a Panasonic VT60 would blow mine away.

I will agree that Smart TV's are generally not warranted. Especially in this case, as the OP is using an HTPC anyway, thus negating any benefit a Smart TV could provide.

I just recently purchased the Panasonic tcp55 s60 and it is great for gaming. Low input lag and great contrast for $999 cad. Only downside is screen washout in very bright conditions. Playing ac4 for pc looks amazing on this panel.

While Samsung did have one of the best reviewed Panels this year, the top calibrators in North America Gave the best overall pick to the Panasonic Vt60. It really depends on what you mean by "Best". If you mean best overall specs, then its the Panasonic. If you mean best peak white levels for 3d it would be the samsung. Check out the flat panel shootout I posted earlier. You might be surprised at what is considered best.

No, they are not. Every brand has its better and worse TV's. Samsung failed several times as well. Samsung certainly isn't better v.s. other brand, and vice versa. From the well known brands, only Pioneer and Loëwe had TV's that set them apart from the norm, but Joe average can't (couldn;t, since Pioneer stopped making TV's some years ago and sold their patents to Panasonic) afford them (or should spend his money wiser).

The best LCD panels are made by Sharp. These panels are also used but basically every TV manufacturer that doesn't produce it's own panels for their top models, including Sony at the time they actually were still involved in the SLCD-jointventure with Samsung (and thus kind of had their own panels).

Samsung has had a problem in terms of inputlag with their TV's. A Samsung-label on a TV equaled a bad inputlag. However, several reviewed Samsung tv's this year did quite well. But if no review with an included inputlag-test is available, I would stay away from Samsung if you're a gamer.

Basically, the dumbest thing one can do is to 'brand-whore'. Just read reviews, and pick the best option that answers to your needs the best. The reasoning that for price X, you'll get a product from one manufacturer A that is per definition better than a product from manufactured B, is nonsense.

The F and E 8000 plasmas form Samsung are great TV's indeed, and gave Panasonics 50-series a run for their money. However this years 60-series are are truly amazing. It's the old Pioneer territory....
