  1. In most cases yes, but there is some cases where it can affect your Mobo's cmos in which case you may have to wipe/clear your Mobo's CMOS, which is not really hard to do.
  2. In this case "Petya" was sent via Dropbox emails to infect users, but most of the time it can be from a various number of things like; infected programs, adware, browser plugins, flash files, unpatched extension's (java, flash are common ones). Doesn't have to be an exe but it could be! Just have to be careful from where you download files and where you travel on the web.
  3. That is very true but if you have files like some people have special family photos another things, its better to get it back, and yeah that would be a downside if they uploaded to their servers, but from the looks of it, the ransomware only locks down your system unless you pay. I could be wrong.
  4. Hey, guys recently there has been some pretty nasty ransomeware going around by the name of "Petya", that would lock down your system unless you paid. But it has been cracked: http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/04/experts-crack-nasty-ransomware-that-took-crypto-extortion-to-new-heights/ If you know someone or have been personally affect by this wave of ransomware there is a fix!
  5. Just a heads up for chrome, you can download the office chrome.deb file from the chrome site. Since its a deb you can also double click to install. Also for drivers try going to settings > drivers >additional drivers and wait for the page to load/pull compatible drivers it found. Unless you have already solved your driver problem. Then select the driver you want to apply.
  6. You don't need extract the file. To install some file *.tar.gz, you basically would do: Open a console, and go to the directory where the file is Type: tar -zxvf file.tar.gz Read the file INSTALL and/or README to know if you need some dependencies. Most of the times you only need to: type ./configure make sudo make install You may need sudo access to work with some commands.
  7. You should be able to just restart the installation from the USB (unless the USB has been corrupted) then you will have to create a new bootable ubuntu usb and start again but don't worry nothing should be permanently dead haha.
  8. Since you want to run VM's I would recommend the this setup here. Though it does cost a bit more. It is practically the same just a few tweaks to the hardware.
  9. I can vouch for this, its a solid laptop, and should last you a while. And yeah with i7 with 4C 8H you can run multiple VM's at once! Though I just noticed its only 8GB Ram, 16 might be more appropriate for VM's.
  10. I would recommend the i7-7600HQ only because the difference is the price and lower performance for a lower price. So if its power you need and money you got, I would recommend the quad core. Also try to future proof yourself a bit don't try to meet bare minimums.
  11. What seems to be the problem with the programs you have tried so far? because all the ones you have in that list I use with no problems.
  12. Hey you can try to run a program called 'Recuva' it is free and will allow you to recover corrupt and deleted files (when possible as long as they have not been overwritten or the file table is still intact). Cheers!
  13. I use Kubuntu because I'm a fan of the plasma interface and the customizability for themes.
  14. I must ask, is this using IRC and what type of encryption is the backbone of this?
  15. Yeah that would definitely work more or less just depends on what you want to go with ssd or hdd I would go ssd (just faster in general).
  16. Oh snap I miss read that, he could fish it through the vents
  17. Very true and I don't know his situation but I know ethernet cables are very cheap so I was just thinking even temporally he could run it in the corners of the carpet or wall's baseboard.
  18. Not being a fan of powerline adapters, have you tried running an ethernet cable from the switch/modem directly to your computer?
  19. Hey actually you can drop the optical drive and add another hard drive in its place if you want, just look around for some of these: http://www.amazon.ca/Generic-Hard-Drive-Caddy-Studio/dp/B00F6K8YQQ/ref=sr_1_sc_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1456865022&sr=1-2-spell&keywords=dell+studio+1555+harddrive+caddy.
  20. What is the partition format of those drives, on the windows side?
  21. Hey I would recommend checking out this link to a video i make on encrypting drives and storage media, but do you want to encrypt both like (both system in one with one password) or encrypt both and have a separate password for each? LINK:
  22. For those of you who are still wondering if you safe of not, here are some easy ways to know: 1) Did you recently download Mint from their website on the 20th? If so you may have a backdoored ISO if you didn't download it directly from their site (direct download on the Feb 20th) you are fine. If you downloaded via P2P your are also fine. PS this is why md5 hashes exist so you can verify your download. Just a heads up.
  23. Yes, only problem is that mac uses a different file system, so you will need to either use a compatible windows/mac format (still might cause problems) or make this shared space a NTFS format via windows and install Paragon NTFS on the mac. (This is what I use).
  24. Hey, this has been a problem I have heard of in the past, are you by chance running an Nvidia card?
