I am sorry, but I disagree. Due tot he new consoles requiring devs using all of thier 8 AMD cores to harness the device, more devs will be using multi-core dev tools. For example watchdog's reccomended cpu specs are: Core i7 3770 @ 3.5Ghz or AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0Ghz. You might be wondering "If an 8350 can run it, why not an i5?" well, my, and many other's guess is that it is optimised for 8 threads. Therefore, if I had a quad or six core, I'd be stuck as that kind of optimazation became more common. Oh, and before I forget: (I decided to prioritize power over storage amount and ssds here) PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ybKw8d Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ybKw8d/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($129.99 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($89.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($54.98 @ NCIX US) Memory: Team Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($67.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($53.59 @ Directron) Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X Video Card ($269.99 @ Newegg) Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($41.99 @ Directron) Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($79.99 @ Amazon) Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24F1ST DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Amazon) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($99.98 @ OutletPC) Other: DVI to VGA Adapter ($10.00) Total: $913.48 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-20 15:10 EST-0500

1. The mobo only supports 1333mhz ram. 2. Yes, I need an optical drive. I watch movies that way, and like experimenting with different linux distros on some of my old pcs, so I read/ burn a lot of disks.
-
Somebody didn't read my requirements... I need a 2tb HDD and a nvidia card. This is way below budget. I am not interested in lowering the money spent, just getting the most out of $950. And why the 1866mhz ram? I chose 1333mhz for a reason: the mobo only supports 1333mhz ram.

So, in about a month I am gonna get myself a gaming pc. I have a $950 budget. I want a processor with lots of cores so as multi-core optomised game become more common I dont get screwed (Or threads. AMD Core are kinda like 3/4 cores. Idk, it's confusing, and I am not a dang silicon engineer.), at least 2tb storage (I plan on recording videos, also my reason for going nvidia, it having shadowplay and all), a overkill psu (so I don't have to worry about power usage when overclocking/ upgrading) and a ssd. Could I have done better for my money? My current plan: PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wgLQhM Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wgLQhM/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($99.99 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ NCIX US) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($54.98 @ NCIX US) Memory: Team Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($67.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($109.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($124.99 @ Amazon) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Dual Superclocked ACX Video Card ($199.99 @ Newegg) Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($41.99 @ Directron) Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($79.99 @ Amazon) Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24F1ST DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Amazon) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($99.98 @ OutletPC) Total: $954.87 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-19 15:55 EST-0500

Ok, cool! Thanks!
-
Do they even MAKE a ipod touch tripod? (As I said in the video, that's what I am using)
-
Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, camera skills could defiantly be better. Don't exactly have a particularly good camera to work with, but if I continue making vids like this I may get a camcorder or something. Thanks again for being constructive and not being like "naw yous sukz" P.S. Old pcs because why not? (It's what I have laying around, but I will review other more current things in the future if I continue doing this)
-
In which I kinda-sorta review three old pcs. And ramble. For like 10 freakin' minutes. Oi. What do you guys think? Edit: Turns out those buttons that I couldn't identify were leds. Score one for me! Also: I know that they are called PS/ 2 ports. I call them salt and pepper P = Pepper & S = Salt. It's how I remember what they are.

Gaming HTPC (Dat form factor doe)
lilshatespug217 replied to lilshatespug217's topic in New Builds and Planning
Obviously. I said "in multi-core optimised applications" which is becoming more and more important than single-core performance, especially with the new consoles that feature an 8 core cpu making many games, such as watch_dogs, want as many cores as possible. -

And it costs ~$30 more and has less cores, meaning that even with hyperthreading and faster cores, it STILL isn't better in multi-core optomised applications. It isn't necessarily better "'cuz intel" or whatever -

I think I would go without before I would give ANY money to dell or it's sub corporations (such as alienware). Everything they make is underpowered for the price. -
So, while I have asked about building a gaming desktop, I have REALLY comfy couch, and nice TV, making a gaming HTPC VERY attractive. Therefore, while OBVIOUSLY it would not have as much power as a desktop, I think it would be worth it. Anyway with a sub $950, MAIL IN REBATES NOT BEING COUNTED, budget, how did I do? Could I have a better rig with the same or equivalent form factor/ peripherals? Suggestions that will be blatently ignored: ANY DUAL CORE CPU RECCOMENDATION Using windows 10 tech preview. (There is a keylogger integrated into it, from what I have heard. While I may use Microsoft products, I sure as hell do not trust them.) Any larger form-factor/ blocky cases. I want a kind of short, console-esque form factor, not a block like a Cooler Master 110 elite. Having any less that 1tb storage and any less than 8gb ram. A radeon gpu. (Not that I think they are bad, as I am well aware that they can be fantastic. Shadowplay is just a important feature for me, and is nvidia only.) No disk drive. My movies are on DVDs, and I would like to be able to watch them on this box. Upgrading a OLD Home PC
lilshatespug217 replied to lilshatespug217's topic in New Builds and Planning
2.4ghz + and old archetecture sounds slow, especially since it would lack turbo. Also, I only have 1gb ddr2, which is nowhere NEAR enough, so that is not an option, as i'd have to buy it. -

Even with hyperthreading, dual cores are going the way of the dinosaur. None for me, sorry.
