  1. Well... Truth be told Im not a big fan of the bare aluminium inside, but somehow this still came out pretty nice with the fan mounted under the cpu heatsink. What i would change tho is to mount the PSU fan up for a much cleaner look, oh and that barcode stcker on your HDD gotta go. I would also to something about that power LED , some sort of shield to prevent the light leak? Great build Andre. Let us know how it performs now it is in the proper case.

  2. thanks guys

i think there was a little too much thermal paste on there the first time. when i added the 92mm fan i cleaned the cpu and the base of the cooler then reapplied a smaller drop of paste.  not sure what makes the most difference the new paste or the 92mm but the 92mm does blow directly onto the CPU base area so it makes sense that it helps.  it's not too loud, either. if you leave the fans on PWM they are practically silent most of the time. the curve for speeding them up as the temps go up is pretty mild. even with both fans at 100% its not bad.

what kind of a case are you using for the new build? the be quiet looks nice. reminds of of a mix of the C12 and C14. cryorig looks good too. and you can't really go wrong with noctua.

Yup.Too much paste can make for higher temps for sure...and that will also explain high temps even on stock clock idle.

As for my build Fractal Design has kindly offered to sponsor a windowed Define R5. Im hooking up an EVGA Z97 FTW motherboard that I was fortunate to win to an Intel 4790K, 16 gigs of Kingston HyperX Savage 2400Mhz CL10 ram, cooler alternatives as mentioned and Ill most likely invest in a GTX970 expecting prices to come even further down with the release of the Ti. For storage 256 gigs worth of Samsung 850 EVO is ready for the OS and a 4TB HGST UltraStar for mass storage yet to buy. Should make for a pretty capable system  :)

  3. Looking at your min avg temps in particular it comes evident that the addition of the 92mm fan really works wonders.

However previous temps with the single fan were suspiciuously high. Could there have been a seating/thermal problem initially?

Im considering a topflow cpu cooler for my new Z97 build. Like the looks of the Cryorig coolers...only problem they are hard to come by in Norway, and the Customod coloured accent pieces yet not available for the C1. Might also go with the staple Noctua or maybe sort to one of the designs from BeQuiet.

  4. Not exactly the R5 but ive used the R3 and the R4 since they were launched....

R5 comes with a GP14 in the front and one in the back. Straight out of the box it is set for a slight negative air pressure as the rear fan, vented backside and pcie-covers will admit more exhaust than the single 140 up front are able to deliver. Not really a big problem, but you may find that the case will "suck" unfiltered dusty air in through the rear if you dont ramp up the front fan way more than the rear.

For optimal airflow, low noise and while keeping a sound positive air pressure I suggest adding another 140mm to the front for your build.

Noctuas are good...but come at a price.

My R4 is filled with Corsair AF and SP quiet editions that run on minimum rpm`s still keeping my rig properly chilled and dust free.

A simple smoke test showed that two AF140s in the front and one AF120 in the bottom for intake. Single AF120 in the back and twin sp120`s through the H100i in the roof for exhaust provided true positive airflow in my case.

Best of luck with your build. Hope this was of some help to you.

EDIT: Otherwise your build looks fine by me.... I dont know how ram hungry Rhino gets....but get 8 gig ram sticks so you have the opportunity to add another 16 if/when you feel for it :-)

  5. Its safe to say Fractal`s Define series are the best "silent optimized" cases when it comes to cooling performance. All comparing tests done has the same conclusion.

Im not sure on the actual dimensions of the new R5 side panel but as "MorningSouls" mentions it will need modifications due to the new "easy latch" system on the new side panel. However the R5 are available in windowed versions and you should atleast be able to order one from your local retailer.

Fractal did release a windowed side panel for the R4 as optional buy..they might do so for the R5 as well.

Hardware Canucks recently did a YouTube video comparing cooling capasity of the Define R5 VS NZXT H440

  6. Im a sucker for the P280 and honestly I dont understand why it was not chosen for this particular "Silent Gaming" Giveaway?

Still the 1100 seems like a nice enclosure, something to even let your mod-freak off on :)

So my favourite part in this build would have to go to the Edge750. Oem`d by Seasonic, 80+Gold, fully modular and ready for next gen connections....whats not to like :D

    Best of luck guys

  7. "Positive air pressure" - more fans pushing air in to the case than what exhausts ( Better option for keeping interior less proned to get dusty)

"Negative air pressure" - more fans exhausting air than what pushes air into the case. (this will force air to be sucked in to the case through all open holes, vents and cracks. A slightly negative air pressure is however known to yield ever so slightly better cooling performance) It is always wise to keep either choices just slightly above the opposite.

As scethed you have 260mm coming in to the case...but you have 360mm venting. Establishing a solid negative air pressure. To top it of you have the HDD-tray and the SSD tray partly blocking the flow for the intakes and the fan on the Hyper212 helping the exhaust sucking whatever air is in there out...

In the case of your 350D I would change the front one of the roof GTs to an intake and the Hyper212 fan to a pushthrough setup. Keep the PSU fan facing down - drawing clean fresh air from the bottom filtered intake. This will alow you a combined 380mm intake - the fan on the Hyper will draw air from the front fans aswell as from the front one of the roof GTs - pushing it through the heatsink and out to the rear exhaust fan. The rear fan and the back roof GT (combined 240mm) will dissapate leftover rising heat from GPU (s) and other hardware. You now have a clear positive pressure..so much in fact you might want to slightly turn down rpms on your front two intakes.

  8. I would strongly recommend to take the time to browse through some good and thorough videos about overclocking.

This will make you understand whats going on and how to manually set timings and volts to achieve your optimal overclock.

Ive not seen Linus video yet, but this one from TinyTomLogan of Overclock3D.com is really good and plain easy to understand for the greenest of noobs.

Nevermind that he uses a Gigabyte motherboard and does the work on a Ivy platform. The principals and  terms used will work just fine across all platforms.

  9. "Please note the giveaway is (unfortunately) USA and Canada only, but anyone can tune in!"

I dont get it...What do you mean when you say "unfortunately"?!  Does Cooler Master play on US & Canadian territory only, or are they taking good money from customers all over the world? Did they by chance leave you with the impression they couldnt affort postage across the pond or something?!

How much do YOU pull to get these done so your entire fanbase can participate?

And please dont offend our intellegence with the old "Its Cooler Master NorthAmerica thats hosting this ...." You and brands the size of Cooler Master are well aware that the Internet is a global platform. You dont have the same expenses running a commercial on community TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan as if you wanted to place them on every single BBC channel around the world. Wal Mart isnt pulling their entire marketing budget out of a local store in Pasadena are they?

Im saying that Cooler Master and all the other major hardware manufacturers are well capable of making contest like these worlwide events.

Is it fair to bring such annoyance...even letting a large group of your fans down..... so that Cooler Master can save a few dollars on postage?

Listen Linus - You have a huge international following....and Cooler Master makes good money on a global scale.

I find it cheap and poor judgement for global players to put such restrictions in place.

If ANYONE has the ability to make large worldwide operating companies like Cooler Master also make their contest and givaways worldwide events - in respect of all their fans and customers.... I should think forums like LTT had a decent chance....

That is if you and your team felt it neccesary to include your...entire community.

  10. wub.png nuff said. I for one didnt mind the PSU sticker at all so im eager to see your plan for the PSU come alive. Could a drop or two of light or medium green turn the dye even closer closer to the braid? Case feet are awesome - Good job FannBlade smile.png

  11. Tubes are nice. Tho I would like to see the rad/cpu-tube with the same sharp bends as the other ones...

Seems the bends on that tube is a little less sharp so the middle line on the tube doesnt end up straight&horizontal like on the other pipes?

  12. nom nom nom nom   ..... I cans hav ze computer when yu done building Snef, yes? No problemo - I cans fix for freight if u empty for moneyz.   :P Not say no. i beliv yu are wery kind person.

Oh....but u must bring full motorcykkel. I am full grown, no play with kid toyz longer more....

btw - WOW. That power cable is totally off the chart man. Stiil enjoy where this build is going.
