  2. It has been brought to my attention that since we now have prizes, it is likely that people will get greedy and try to cheat by rigging votes. The above is my response from the Week 52 thread, and I would like to move the discussion over here. Does anyone want to comment or give feedback on this?
  3. Don't worry, that's why votes are always public. If a voter has only a handful of posts, I will be suspicious, but I won't jump to conclusions or try to get anyone banned. You are totally free to not vote for anyone else, I just left it open-ended in case someone wanted to enter and vote. I don't think that will really solve anything, especially since the votes are already public. It says in the rules: I will be harsher in the future and DQ people from a contest if they vote for themselves, rather than just disregarding it (I obviously don't have the power to give demerits on accounts since I'm not a mod). I don't think that a minimum post-count is allowed on this forum and it really just inspires post-mongering. @ddbtkd456 and I can check the winner's profiles (and voter's profiles) for anything fishy, but for now it does not seem to be out of control. If you are a voter and your account is suspicious (recent creation date w/ 0 other interactions on the forum), I will PM you to try and resolve the issue privately. If you have proof (or heavy suspicion) of foul play, please bring it to my attention, but do not harass anyone. To post suggestions or feedback click here, and please try to be cordial to your fellow forum members.
  4. Voting is up! Keep upgrades in mind when choosing the best build. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198046-week-52-upgrade-path-part-1

I've decided to install a flavor of Linux (and…

My daily driver is Manjaro, which has the ease of use of Mint but the rolling release of Arch, with slightly delayed packages for stability. It might not fit into your ladder of distros, but for me its a great middle ground between the complex power-user distros (Arch/Gentoo) and the simpler user-friendly distros (Ubuntu/Mint). It doesn't give you the knowledge the building Arch or Gentoo does, so do that at least once first.
  6. The answer to both of those is no, mainly because it makes things too complicated. In addition, there is no set price you would get from selling a part, and it creates too many variables.
  7. Yep, that's a good format. Part 1 (this contest) is to show a good basic PC with potential, while Part 2 (next contest) will be to show the final product.
  8. Sorry guys, that's what makes the challenge hard. I'm happy to change it to $600 since no one has entered yet, but I've posted plenty of low-end challenges before that turned out surprisingly good PCs. Check some of those for ideas.
  9. Hey everyone, big update coming your way. The contest will now run every two weeks, and to kick it off the challenge is Upgrade Path Part 1. After Upgrade Path, the challenges will mainly be low-end, mid-range, and high-end PC budget builds similar to the monthly updates of something like MaximumPC magazine. These will be on a revolving schedule, so all three will be updated every six weeks (which should allow for time for new hardware to come out). There are also now a prize for the winner of each contest (in the form of a $20 Amazon gift card), courtesy of @ddbtkd456. I'm looking forward to your feedback .
  10. Welcome to Week 52 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. Thank you to @MEC-777 and @f22luke for suggesting the challenge. In MEC-777's words: This is the first part of the challenge, so keep in mind that you need a viable upgrade path. The next challenge (in two weeks) will be to upgrade the winning build from this contest. Budget: $500 base computer + $500 for upgrades Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: August 15th through 21st Voting: August 22nd through 28th This is obviously a little more involved than previous challenges, so if you have any questions about this experiment, ask below. Happy building!

I assume you're playing Modern or Standard Vitalius, in which case you should definitely stick to a 60 card deck. You can't legally have fewer cards, but having more hurts your odds of drawing what you need.

My friends just got me into it too :). Use tappedout.net to make and edit your decks.
  13. What about this from Asus (through XoticPC): http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-x555ladb51-p-7358.html You can upgrade to an SSD (or a smaller caching SSD), but you really won't find anything under $600 except maybe a Chromebook, and that probably won't have the specs you want anyway (worth a shot though).

Here's something to ruin your day. There is abs…

I went to a Jewish Day school where we learned the hebrew alphabet. It was really interesting, since the first few letters (for example) are "Aleph, Bet, Gimel" whereas Greek is "Alpha, Beta, Gamma" and we have the "alphabet." This continues throughout basically the whole alphabet.

No, I like posts all the time. I meant "are you publicising an official forum-wide effort" or "did you make this up yourself because it seems like a good idea (which it does)"?

    Is this an official thing?
  17. Vote for the winner of Week 51! I put up the poll yesterday, but forgot to make the announcement, so I am extending the contest to give time for voting. Also, I will be at a summer program at the beginning of August, and the next challenge will most likely be posted on the 15th, the next Friday after I get back. Thanks for your understanding
  18. No, my username is just a pun suggested by a friend. Apparently it went over a lot of people's heads, including ones in real life. "Jacob" substituted for "the cob."

That makes sense--I wondered how Linus snuck into Slick's bedroom to hit him in the ChannelSuperFun videos. A couple times Slick had headphones on and Linus surprised him, and I wondered how Linus picked the lock...
  20. Congrats @Cacao for winning the last contest! Week 51: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/183744-build-off-week-51-area-51/
  21. Welcome to Week 51 of the LTT Build-Off! The rules and guidelines can be found here. This week your build can be any color you want, but it should be vibrant, and include lighting and/or custom cables (which can be added as custom parts). If you need inspiration, basically think of Alienware lighting (hence the alien implication), but your computer will have much better value than what Alienware can deliver. Budget: $1,111 Speakers/Headphones: No Mouse: No Keyboard: No Monitor: No Submissions: July 19th through 21st Voting: July 22nd through 24th 31st

Fractal all the way :)! I built with an Arc Midi R2, and I love it (Josh is awesome too). I second the motion for pics.
  23. Sorry guys, there was a series of unfortunate events (basically, couldn't access my normal computer and my phone wouldn't load the forum properly), and once that got sorted out, it was too late to post the challenge. I just took a two-day trip to start looking at different colleges (once again with only my phone), so I couldn't even post and say that this would be a "bye week." Area 51 (probably bright colors and/or lighting required) will be the next challenge, followed by the Optimal Upgrade Path build. What are your thoughts on doing less frequent builds at set price points, similar to the seasonally updated builds on Anandtech, TomsHardware, etc. (although this would probably be monthly). Otherwise, I could do a few "refresh" builds, but new hardware doesn't come out often enough (never thought I'd say that ) to keep things interesting.
