SGM reacted to Bombastinator in Linus on Live Stream (I've been thinking of retiring)
Midlife crisis is definitely a thing.  The issue though is it’s frequently chemical and not actual.  Stuff suddenly feels like it’s “not as fun” somehow etc..  dollars to doughnuts it’s testosterone level.   Male menopause.  No really.  It’s a thing.  It lasts maybe one to two years, and everything is normal again.  This is the secret to sports cars and why men of a certain age buy them.  Testosterone is like nitrous oxide is for cars.  You react more and more slowly,  you heal a LOT more slowly, and you just don’t feel “right”.  To make it more annoying it’s a gradual slide so for the entire period.  One of the weirdest ones is old old injuries suddenly come back.  I got frost bite on my toes in junior high.  Permanent damage but it didn’t seem that way until my testosterone dropped and the damage became visible again.  There’s actually this diagonal line across my feet where the caps on my skates were.  Hidden for 35 years.  Women get all kinds of semaphores stuff. Hot flashes me strait on weirdness, but for men it’s invisible.  They think it’s the world or what’s going on around them instead of just internal hormonal junk.  Makes it potentially very dangerous.  It’s the same damn ting though.  Humans are humans.

The secret to sports cars:  Sports cars are machines.  A sports car can have all the instant response and sudden acceleration and power a man was used to having.  You put it on, and for a bit you’ve got it back again.  It can help.  This will pass.  Don’t make irrevocable decisions that seemed stupid a while back.  They’re still stupid.  Testosterone patches don’t really help long term. You’ve got to actually stick them to your junk with a hair dryer for one thing and all they do is delay the inevitable.

For what it’s worth this is something that literally EVERY GUY ON EARTH goes through if they live long enough.  It will pass.

Have you shut down the PC then turned the power switch off, then back on again? my PSU use do this (but on a much more rapid scale) and that was the solution.

Also @SGM, check in your BIOS under Boot or other if you have a Power-On Timer / BIOS Power-On.

Some BIOS can be programmed to turn on the PC on certain days at certain hours.

i havent encountered any games that max out my 4790k. My good ol haswell still got plenty of room left to stretch its legs. Great cpu, im only upgrading from mine because im bored and feel like doing a new build Not even sure if im gonna sell mine, or turn it into an overkill htpc machine

Not really "damn old", only 2 generations back (we don't count broadwell).
That being said, OP has the 4790k at 4.4GHz on a Z97 board, so it could definitely be pushed higher to max performance, given the H100i and all.
That maximus board is really top tier, so if you sold the 7600k and grabbed an LGA 1151 i7, you could get a serious overclock, especially with your double rad.

I'll put my vote in for the 4790K. Haswell really is still quite relevant, even though people like to think CPUs have aged so much. No... they've just gotten more cores.

I would only consider it a good upgrade if you got an i7 7700k (or 6700k). Otherwise, you're better off with good old haswell, since four cores get choked a lot lately in new titles.

LGA 1150 and 1151 have identical mounting.

Not quite. a hyperthread =/= a core, it's not nearly as good.

It probably even activates automatically, like in my case.
Not even reinstall is needed. Just use existing system.

We forgot about it for a while, then we remembered, then we tried to find the list, then we couldn't easily, then we forgot about it again for a bit.

We actually do still intend to do it eventually, but running the business has been a higher priority......

It's not a good excuse and I'm sorry it's taken so long

As the title reads, what happened to the 'Your name on the wall of the new office' that was proposed before LTT moved from the house setup (I miss that kitchen) to the warehouse? (tbh I don't remember when that was. 2016 maybe?)

I know plans change, and it's been such a long time already I'm not actually bothered, just curious.

I'd personally go for the 1070, the newer architecture, lower power draw, higher overclock-ability an also the newer aftermarket designs make it an all-round better card. The performance is the same but you should also look at driver support, game optimization and also cooling and overclocking

If you really want to play 4K then I'd say stretch for a 1080
    Otherwise 1070 at 4K medium-low settings

If the price is the same, go for the newer one (aka 1070).

If you can get the 980ti cheaper (which you most likely can), then get that, since the performance is pretty much the same.

Sounds like something messed up during installation and you have corrupted files. You might have to do a fresh install and update to fix it.

Sounds alot like the machine is booting into a "soft-mode" are you sure all your componentry is windows 10 compatible?
Try to boot manually into "safe mode" (usually pressing F8 whilst it is turning on) if it behaves normally start disconnecting / uninstalling components until you get a normal windows login.
If no change perhaps use the Windows repair my installation tool and then research the error codes provided.
    Hope this helps

nVidia drivers. Nuff said. Case closed. Moving on. NEXT!
Hear me out; I'm not picking on nVidia here. This black screen upon log-on after an OS update or nVidia driver update was a regular occurrence at the computer repair shop I worked at. It happened with Windows 8 through 10 due to the way the drivers fail to talk to the hardware when you shut the system down with fast startup enabled.

Since then, I've made a note to ALWAYS disable fast startup on any and all Windows 8 and 10 systems I ever have access to.
