If you want more then 3.2gb of ram, you'll have to use a 64 bit OS (any 64bit OS)

Liam-Wabbit reacted to Mira Yurizaki in What power does your PC draw from the wall in watts ?
The last time I measured my computer's power consumption:
Idle (i.e., not touching the computer for 10 minutes after booting): got it down to about 30-40 watts Basic tasks (web browsing, including watching a YouTube video): about 70-80 watts Demanding game (Crysis 3): 230-250 watts I used a Kill-A-Watt to do this.
I think there's a lot of worry about the variables. Don't worry about those. Set some parameters and stick with it. As long as you have a good reason, it's useful data. It may not be everyone's use case, but trying to satisfy everyone's use case is the same as trying to make everyone happy. If you're not happy with that use case, you can either kindly ask the person to measure it under the conditions you want, or do it yourself.
Also I feel like a lot of the mindset here is "my way or the highway."

I haven't done any measuring, but simply turning my pc of a night and any time I wasn't going to use it for more than a few hours shaved about $30 of my bill. Using a laptop or tablet for everything else saved a little more.
People are generally surprised when they hear how low my power bill is.

I've gone over to using my media PC for daily use like Youtube, Facebook, accounts, old PC games ect
I'll keep the gaming/poweruser PC for AAA games and ripping and converting films.
my media PC would take 7-10 hours of use before it reaches the same amount of energy my gaming PC uses in a hour

Liam-Wabbit got a reaction from DocSwag in Power Efficient GPU's
Think i might just get a KVM switch and keep the gaming PC for gaming and use the media PC for old games ect
I've got till Christmas to source the parts or second hand part. see what spoils people are selling off after christmas

Liam-Wabbit got a reaction from Ezzy-525 in Making an old PSU into a semi modular PSU
OK thank you for your opinion It's a hobby project I could just buy a modular one , but where the fun it that
I could just buy a pre-built PC
-
Liam-Wabbit reacted to brob in Making an old PSU into a semi modular PSU
Did you consider removing the unneeded cable from the harness? Cut them inside the psu case and put grommets on the ends or simply unsolder them.
I would point out that using a user modified psu might invalidate insurance coverage should it contribute or be suspected of contributing to a problem.

Liam-Wabbit reacted to darragh_5 in I want to start computer repair and building.
Yes, I was going to get something like a Samsung Evo SSD as the boot drive and have a 500GB or 1TB drive for everything else. I was going to add mabey something like a GT 710 as a new GPU. That thing is small and don't need PCI-E power. Most power supplys in older systems are like 240 Watts, so a Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, an SSD, 1TB HDD and a GT 710 would make an Ok system for most things. I am able to solder new capacitors to the motherboard if some are bulging.

Not every one can afford to buy the latest technology
Not every one knows how to use a computer
and when people come on here for advice , or even just to display a new system (new to them ?)
even if it a K6 AMD running win95
they don't need to see nasty comments in the threads
comments like
"new? that platftform is 2 years old"
"Did you just want to reach 300 posts? "
people don't need that ! if you can't say anything nice ! well you know the saying
If you know more about computer than the person posting, help them, don't run them down !
there has been a point in all our lives where we have had to scrimp for a gaming computer
or didn't know how to install software ect. There also been a point where we have had to ask for advice

Liam-Wabbit got a reaction from Sithhy in Experiences with non-techies
I don't have a problem with non-techies, till they ring for the 11th time to fix something :( Usually software.
Non-techies first PC, is usually an old one, that can just barely run the internet and they'll expect it to play something like Farcry 3 lol.
I carry around cards for pc classes at the college and say if you want me to fix your pc for the 5th time,
I'll have to charge (sorry song popping into my head there lol)
