  1. its probably coil whine. Does it always make that noise when the pc is on? or only when you run certain apps? Have you really put your ear up to your system to figure out where the sound is coming from?
  2. what is your max budget? that way we can help you a bit better
  3. i agree. two laptops for college isnt a good idea. you should make some compromises and settle for a mid-tier laptop that has good performance while also being portable with good battery life keep in mind most lecture arent more than 3 hours anyways so you can run it on power saver for most situations and get through class. A good balance for specs Corei5, and a geforce gt 730 ish setup My friend has that lenovo laptop you posted, its a great performer but battery life does not go to 3 hours. its a very strong performer but not really portable. he places it on his desk with a notebook cooler with an external monitor and keyboard setup because it gets very hot on the palms
  4. yes. i watch full hd content on this resolution myself and its fine (720p and 1080p) no black bars on netflix because it is still 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio http://25.media.tumblr.com/2ee6922790a96f884510af6e8b2219d5/tumblr_mpyu5mLUTF1qztwe4o1_1280.jpg i have used this resolution on my laptop for 3 years of college working on huge excel spreadsheets. its the "norm" these days Going forward you shouldnt worry too much about the screen. instead look for things like build quality and battery life
  5. i changed my mind this is actually a pretty legit setup the only thing i will add to this is a good laptop cooler for when hes gaming because HP's thermals are very generic and tend to get hot under load as long as your brother doesnt thrash around the laptop it will be fine for at least 2-3 years expect to spend 40 bucks on a new battery after about a year or two
  6. NOTE: a higher resolution is great but it means it will require a better GPU to power it
  7. That is actually very good. those specs and upgrades make it a very solid performer. My only gripe is that its HP. that their build quality is pretty bad imo...(owned 4 HP laptops in the last 10 years) Here is my suggestion: $640 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152426 (corei5, 6gb ram, geforce gt710, 500gb ) For some reference i have a 4 year old gateway laptop (Core2Duo T6600, 4gb ram, geforce G210m) and with those specs at 1366x768 i can easily run l4d2 and TF2 at 60ish FPS
  8. Also. It sounds like "3.7 ghz and over" is a subcategory that would be placed right after the 3.6 ghz speed because several AMD chips are available at that stock speed
  9. I agree. I feel like whatever tool they are using to measure hardware specs is only looking at part numbers, for example: intel 3570k = 3.4ghz
  10. 450w is more than enough for your 650ti boost. You have nothing to worry about
  11. its meant to be durable for little bumps and drops and spills dont know why they took it so far considering HP never marketed the laptop to withstand a beating like that
  12. NCIX is having a warehouse sale in BC.....so its a no-brainer that you should go and pick up parts
  13. I am not really looking for hardcore performance but looking forward to a reliable long-lasting drive I thought green drives change speeds 5400 - 7200 under load?
  14. - 760 may be too much, but then again i dont know what kind of games youre running - Also take a look at 670 or 680 as they have GPU acceleration that Photoshop can really benefit from - Another SSD brand would be cheaper - I would suggest either the Define Mini case or getting a ATX mobo (future proof) - PSU is great but you can possibly get a lower capacity one to save a few more bucks. (your system will maybe use 400watts MAX under a full load)
  15. I need a new internal HDD to store all my photography work I am on a budget so i narrowed down my options to these 3: WD Green 1tb http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=78350&vpn=WD10EZRX&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD WD Blue 1tb http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=74462&vpn=WD10EZEX&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD&promoid=1213 Seagate Barracuda http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=58746&vpn=ST31000524AS&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1213 They are all relatively the same price ($70ish) and all have great reviews Anything i should know or can i just pick either? leaning towards the green drive *** *UPDATE* looking for a reliable long-lasting drive ***
  16. 1. it sounds like overtime the heat may have dislodged the thermal paste/heatsink and/or the gpu fan may not be spinning properly. 2. It is a very old gpu. i can imagine it runs very hot and it is very outdated for modern games. I suggest buying a new video card.
  17. it took a lot of brute force and tweezers and pliers and i managed to salvage it. thanks
  18. i was cleaning out my brothers pc when i noticed his stock intel heatsink was loose! (LGA 775 stock heatsink) He had an old case so i had to remove the whole motherboard and noticed that the heatsink was only making contact with 2 / 4 pins.... Two of the pins i simply rotated 90' clockwise to reset but the other two are stuck in the lock position with the black metal min poking through the white clips. i've tried using a screwdriver and applied force to turn the other two to reset them. but they wont budge. Photo should be attached in this post
