Alright I'll get it then. Looks like the 650W PSU won't be an issue either. Thanks for the help! 😄

Can you share a screenshot of your PCs CPU-Z results? You can get CPU-Z from: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

    Mine looks like this.

You can see that the DRAM frequency is about 1600 Mhz. This means that my RAM is running at 3200 Mhz. Also note the CAS# Latency - Mine is 16.0. If we can speedup your RAM you might be on your way to popping heads with more FPS.

200 FPS isn't the stopping point for the Valorant engine. I get about 320 FPS with a very old GPU (R9 280x 3GB).

PS. Valorant loves fast and tight RAM.

Oh alright..in that case i suggest you go for the Ryzen 5 2600 ( Around 12500 inr ) and the MSI b450 Tomahawk MAX, a very reputable budget motherboard ( Currently on sale for inr 11500 ), if you can push your budget up a bit, you can try the Ryzen 7 2700 ( 2 more cores and 4 more threads, comes around 16500 inr)

Also, if you want to go for more gaming performance specifically, then around the same price as the 2600, you can get the Ryzen 3 3300x, which has better GAMING performance than the r5 2600, but 2 lesser cores and 4 lesser threads

I wouldn't if it costs that much. Just get a 3300x, or if you're in India the 3500 might even be an option, though I don't know how much they cost.
I mean, while true, 4 cores is still fine for pretty much every title. If you're targeting 60fps they're still perfectly fine.

An i5-6600 is a true quad. Four cores, four threads. Games are using eight threads these days. I don't know what your market prices are, but I would definitely hold out until I could afford a Skylake or Kaby Lake i7.

back when SkyOC is a thing, yes (and still is if you stick to outdated OS and BIOS). A board that supports SkyOC is necessary though which are all Z170 boards.

Thank you everybody for the awesome replies. Here's what I gather.

The CPU is more than likely holding back any sort of decent GPU. Stated by everybody. No overclocking for me; I don't have a Z series motherboard. Thanks @TofuHaroto Possible CPU upgrade: 6700 or a 7700. Thanks @asile9 A CPU upgrade can help towards 144hz upgrade. Thanks @Moonzy Yes, the SSD is DRAM-less (most probably). Getting a nicer, high capacity one will be great. Thanks @dizmo I don't have much of a budget. I'll sell my i3 and buy a second-hand Skylake i7 for now. And then maybe 1.5 years later, I can get a completely new PC at which point I'll be back to bother you all. 😛

    Thanks once again!

afaik people sell skylake i7 way overpriced, i would recommend comparing price of the combo with recent releases (like ryzen 3 3300x) and see which one is better worth it

CPU upgrade first for sure, 290X is not that bad (aside from horrid power draw). I dont think you can find quad core upgrades on this platform for cheap so might as well spend extra and get new platform instead.

which is frankly rubbish, so flawed it's more of a sieve than a colander (if this makes sense).

    1. Multipler lock is software. Specifically, a combination of microcode and Intel ME (management engine). Microcode can be changed (of course also have some level of encryption to it) to say sth's "unlocked", but Intel ME would stop you and since ME is also responsible for security stuff, it's really difficult to crack and I dont think anyone has done it so far. LTT is wrong with how it's locked by hardware, but it's correct that you can forget about unlocking CPUs yourself. The "loophole" they mentioned here is in Intel ME.

    2. They are effectively marketing Asrock BFB/APE rather than talking about truths in tech. Realistically this is no different than raising the power limit on GPUs, which means the multipliers are still in place and locked as usual. In other words, this only helps with CPUs that hit the power limit all the time and don't reach their max multipliers (for example, the locked i7 and i9 models). Against low core count CPUs? Useless. Against people comfortable with tuning power limits themselves? Also useless. Of course not all boards let you do this to the point that the CPU no longer power throttles, but even MSI offers a bigger power tuning range without actively advertising this

Assuming OP is going to save up more/ has the budget to.
Mid range is still an option. Heck we don't even know his budget lol.
And, if OP couldn't go with zen 3. Zen 2 will be cheaper.
    But as I said.
^. 6700/7700 is still an option.

ContraHacker reacted to dizmo in What's the most sensible upgrade path? (Mid-Tier PC)
I'd go with the 6700...however, it might also be worth grabbing the AMD 3300x and a motherboard depending on how long you're willing to wait; IIRC they're still out of stock. You can then sell the i3 and your current motherboard and you'll probably come out spending a little less.

When asking about upgrades it really helps to have some kind of a budget. Otherwise it's really hard to offer any kind of useful recommendation.

Don't worry as much about the DRAM on your SSDs, they're fine, however if you were to upgrade them I'd definitely grab a 1TB of something NVME based.

Waiting for Ampere/Big Navi doesn't make sense for him. The low end cards won't be out for a considerable amount of time.
Same with Zen 3. It took them forever to come out with the lower end CPUs.

ContraHacker reacted to Moonzy in What's the most sensible upgrade path? (Mid-Tier PC)
if you're after mid-low range cards, then they wont be released anytime soon based on their previous launches (likely half a year away still)
but nonetheless when new cards launches, the high end will get pushed down a tier in term of pricing, so even lower tier cards price will drop slightly.
it depends if you think waiting is worth it or not.
    yes
in most games i would expect that to not be the case, in fact, the i3 is holding back the GPU
    CSGO definitely cpu limited
    not sure about valorant
SOTR is very heavy on the cpu, probably CPU limited in most cases

if you're looking to push 144hz, i would probably advice upgrading your CPU as u can lessen the load of GPU with lower quality, but CPU loads normally dont reduce too much even on lowest settings

    my recommendation:
upgrade your CPU first, then look for a GPU upgrade
your SSD is not optimal but it should be fine, larger capacity might be nice though.

you could wait for next gen stuff to drop if it's not urgent

Honestly? i7-6700 or 7700 and a 1660 Super or 5600 XT. Don't buy the 1660 Ti--bad value and older VRAM.

You're heavily limited by the cpu.
It's a 2c/4t chip. And will Bottleneck you with almost every decent GPU.
You can change the BCLK if you have a z series board.
    Yes afaik.
    Get a 6700/7700 or  move to a 3300x and a decent b450/550 board.

Wait for zen 3 and the decide which platform you want to move to.
As for ampere and big Navi. Wait for that to.
As the 290x is still Decent.
Haven't watched the video. But I assume they're talking about BCLK.

ContraHacker reacted to Mateyyy in What's the most sensible upgrade path? (Mid-Tier PC)
Imo upgrading your CPU would be a lot more beneficial than a GPU upgrade. The 290X is not far off an RX 480, which is still a perfectly capable 1080p card, but that i3 is holding you back in CS:GO, probably Valorant, definitely video editing, and maybe even in SOTR.
So yeah that's regarding your first question.

    2. Try checking whether you can change your BCLK in the BIOS. If you can, then yes you can do some sudo overclocking, but probably not much.
    3. Yes, the WD Green SSD is really quite poor, particularly as an OS drive.
    4. No, more like the other way around rather.
