  1. I'm looking for a cheap solution to 3D rendering. I currently run an R9 390 and an i5-4460. I use Blender for 3D stuff. On one hand, most gaming benchmarks show that Intel i5s are more worth it than i7s. I hear lots of people say that i7s are really only good for multi-threading. On the other hand, I hear blogs saying that they render with lower-end/outdated Intel Xeons, and get similar performance to a much more expensive i7. If this is true, why do i7s even exist? Why get a 6700K when you can get a Xeon E5-2670? Or, alternatively, when it comes to this kind of computing, is it better to have more cores and higher clock speeds, or multi-threading, higher optimization, and all that other stuff?
  2. i'm posting progress on my youtube channel (first video here). so far it's really boring (just regular speed, no audio), but i'm going to start uploading them as timelapses soon, as soon as i figure out a good way to do it.
  3. I'm making a detailed 3d model of a computer, but can't seem to find good images of the back of the i/o. if somebody happens to have pics to that area or can take pics, that'd be great. i'm probably going to post the final computer on this forum sometime in the future (~1/2 year - 1 year) Here's a render of the area I'm talking about: http://i.imgur.com/nUiUKLK.png i don't need pictures of the whole pcb, it's the dvi/hdmi/dp ports i'm looking for.

  5. My computer's been through a lot recently. Today, it is up and working, but with a few minor(-ish) problems. Let me start with a short history of my build (not sure if relevant, but nevertheless a good read, hopefully): A few months back, my copy of Windows died (probably fixable). Being a 13-year old with a pretty crappy rig that my dad got somebody else to build, I decided to use this as an opportunity to upgrade the computer. So here I am with my new computer. Everything working fine until, one day, it refuses to turn on. I then posted this post asking for help. People used it to rant on Corsair CX PSUs. Not very helpful. I did eventually get a new PSU (not CX). We brought the computer to a local repair shop, which told us that the motherboard had died. Went to NCIX to get another one (MSI Z97 Krait Edition), put it in my computer, to no avail. We went back to the shop to get it looked at, turns out the mobo had died again. This happened 2-3 times, until the people at NCIX got very angry that we were eating through their motherboards (understandable). They told us to get them to fix it. Cue the death of two more motherboards. In the end, it was the case's problem (I heard that the power button thingy that goes into the motherboard was shorting all of them). Got a new case; this is my current build: ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/brandoncomp2/saved/M4dG3C. Now to the problem(s). For some reason, games are running smoother now, even though I have the same GPU and CPU (maybe a fresh install, or OCing <-- probably not). Problem #1: When I turn off the computer, it just turns back on again. I have to turn off the power supply. Even then, it still attempts to turn on again: the light on the GPU turns on for a fraction of a second, and I hear a little sound (not beeping). Problem #2: The computer POSTs, but gets stuck at the BIOS screen. I have to turn off the power supply and turn it back on again to get it working. (Is this bad? Probably. not) Problem #3: Once I see the login screen, my keyboard and mouse don't work for ~5 seconds. Problem #4: Upon login, the brightness (gamma?) jumps up really high, and I can't turn it back down until I exit f.lux and re-calibrate my display thorough the control panel option. These problems are pretty minor as of now, but I have a feeling that something else will go wrong soon. Soon.

  7. Right click it, and create a new partition.
  8. I forced a shutdown on my computer a few minutes ago, and now it won't boot. (Shutdown probably doesn't have to do with the problem) When taking everything apart to troubleshoot, the motherboard beeped while unplugging the 24-pin connector (I didn't cut power to the system ). Power appears to be going through the USB ports, because my mouse is lit up and turns off when I unplug it. Is this a problem with the motherboard? CPU: Intel i5-4460 Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Anniversary RAM: 8GB A-Data DDR3-1600 GPU: GIGABYTE G1 Gaming Radeon R9 390 Power Supply: Corsair CX600M Edit: ok, i get that my psu is not the best. i'll get to upgrading it as soon as i get the chance. keep in mind that my computer still does not work, so it would be great if somebody could help me find a solution.

  10. I've been searching for something to get myself for my birthday, but havent been successful. Anybody have any ideas? Budget is around $60-100 CAD. Looking for small-ish gadgets or tech around $100

  12. I just installed Windows 8 on my primary drive and started it up, everything was working, but there was a missing icon in the notifications bar. Then, the computer started getting laggy, and the Start screen showed nothing. Then, the computer restarted on it's own. Fast forward a few days (and flawless reboots) later, I had to restart the computer. This usually takes 10 seconds, but the computer screen went black after the Windows loading screen, when, 20 seconds later, it turned grey. It won't boot now. I should let you know that I have three drives, one for a main OS, a second for secondary OSes, and a third for storage. The problem was on the primary one (and also applies to the secondary one), and I am currently running on the third drive, which temporarily has Windows on it as well. The secondary drive has Windows 10 Technical Preview on it, and for some reason, the first two OSes were acting as if they were dual-booting (the OS selection menu at boot). Also, the Tech Preview won't boot either.
  13. Since the 780 Ti beats the 970 by so much, I'm going to suggest that for ~$800, you get an EVGA Classified Kingpin 780 Ti.
