  1. All great points, sleep would be a great idea. One should not build pcs while half asleep.
  2. I was unaware how soon the new line was getting released, I'll ask him about waiting, seems that it's the best option. As for the DVD drive, yeah he requested one for some reason. I chose that Motherboard because it was the least expensive that allowed for SLI that I could find. Just in case he wanted to upgrade in the future.
  3. What price point will it be released at?
  4. EDIT: He also already has an SSD to put in it. A friend of mine has asked me to put together a build for his son for Graduation. The budget is $900 US, but I'd like to keep it a bit lower if possible. Also, he'd like as much on Amazon as possible as he has prime and that would save a ton on shipping, plus he can get his Amazon points for his rewards Visa. He already has a keyboard and mouse, and he will be using a TV as his monitor. Right now he plays mostly League of Legends, Overwatch and a few others, but he would like the capability to play other AAA titles when they release. I'm guessing since he's using a TV the refresh rate is somewhere around 60Hz, so pushing anything above 60fps isn't really needed. I came up with : PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.32 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($109.12 @ Amazon) Memory: Kingston FURY 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($43.43 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($52.95 @ Amazon) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card ($288.88 @ Amazon) Case: Corsair 450D ATX Mid Tower Case ($128.38 @ Amazon) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($80.23 @ Amazon) Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-14 DVD/CD Writer ($20.06 @ Amazon) Total: $942.37 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-06-21 07:44 EDT-0400
  5. Update, MSI RMAed the card for a second time. Hopefully 3rd card is a charm?
  6. My card in my computer has no issues whatsoever. His card in my computer produces the pixellation pictured above.
  7. That's kind of what I figured. 2 dead cards in a row from MSI. I'd say that's unusual. I hope they don't charge him AGAIN to send this 2nd one back.
  8. A friend of mine bought a brand new MSI GTX 970 4G card. He had some issues where the driver would crash occasionally and he RMAd it to Newegg. They told him the card was fine, but would send him a new one. At this point, he thought it must be some other issue with his PC, but I wasn't sure. So I put it into mine (I run a GTX 970 Strix) and I get all kinds of pixellation and I can't even see the windows desktop. I'm wondering if the 2nd card they sent him was also bad, since I put my card back in and had no issues whatsoever. I attached a couple of pics I snapped on my phone that show what the screen is doing.
  9. I built a system a little over a year ago, and now I found a great deal on a 2nd 970 and am wondering if my PSU is enough for that. 10. Portability isn't a huge issue, as it will only be carried while away on business and then set on a desk top.
  11. I'm looking to teach myself some basic programming skills. I have a very small amount of C experience, as I had to take a programming course for my Electrical Engineering major (I never finished it). I've been looking into it again lately and it's something I really want to try to learn. Any advice on which languages to start with/progress through?
  12. I'm looking into a gaming laptop and am wanting to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500, a bit over would be ok. I've looked at a few options and have come up with: DELL Alienware AW17R3-4175SLV MSI GE72 Apache Pro-070 Acer Predator G9-791-735A Open to other suggestions as well.
  13. Yeah, I really have no way of testing it. The monitor makes this GOD awful squealing sound while it's on as well. If I had some disks I'd test it and see if it works. I wonder how had finding a broken one/empty case/keyboard would be.
  14. @ChickenNugget It turns on, I don't have any games that I can test it with.
  15. Has anyone seen or heard of a modern PC being built into an old Apple IIe case? I have an old one I got from a school auction and thought it would be sweet to be able to do it. The case I have is the one I attached.
  16. So, that Seasonic 520, should have no issues pushing that 760?
  17. The Blu-Ray reader is a must for them. I think it doubles as a HTPC.
  18. A friend of mine was wanting the best bang for the buck build for under $500, they already have a video card which they should be able to use again (GTX 760). So I came up with this build. Will the Power supply be enough or should I go bigger? 19. Which GPU would be best for gaming if I had around $350 US to spend on it? I'm thinking the R9 390 or the GTX 970.
  20. I think this is the build minus the GPU, Hard Drive and SSD. (He has a brand new SSD he'll be using and will be re using a 1TB HDD. I'm torn between the GTX 970 or the R9 390. I've watched a few videos here and there and I can't decide which one to get. Which card would fit best here and keep it under $800? 21. Crap, I forgot to mention he already has a 480GB SSD he bought on sale a few months ago.
  22. As the title says I have a friend who is looking for a computer for 1080p gaming. Mainly games like World of Warcraft, Ark, Heroes of the Storm and he's really gotten into a game called Mordheim: City of the Damned. He did give me a pretty broad range for budget which was $500 - $800. I was trying to stay in the middle if I could but wouldn't mind presenting maybe 2-3 options to him throughout the budget range. This is the first build I came up with so far. I hear the 380 is a good bang for the buck card...I've not done a ton of research on it personally though. Also I left the case out because I'll just let him choose it. 23. Just did a quick search for blu ray on VLCs site and it seems it has issues playing them. https://forum.videolan.org/search.php?keywords=blu+ray&sid=ffd50b43ccd7b5773b936c59d2f1d489
  24. A friend of mine is looking to buy a blu ray drive for his PC and was looking at http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-optical-drive-bw12b1stblkgas I'm under the impression that this doesn't come with software to play back blu ray discs though. What inexpensive or free options are there out there that will play blu rays for him?
