a_block_of_wood got a reaction from PlayStation 2 in is it worth to convert my video archive to h.265 mp4 from h.264 mkv?
Interesting. Makes a lot of sense if you are trying to compare h.264 and h.265 when you have the original lossless source?

Converting lossy to another lossy from experience, usually mean some quality lost. Again, I'm no expert, just someone who used to convert mpeg1-> h.264.

Passion and logic thinking is much more important than language. Programming language comes and go, if not, they get updated over the years.

You're learning now, 10 years later you'll still be learning. 30 years later you'd probably still be learning (hopefully teaching younger generations to code.. maybe?).

I started with C. It helps cover the basics and build a foundation. I'm now coding C# but I'm mostly doing data modeling and database optimization. Nothing to do with games though...

well im a software developer and people always tell me to step up and become project manager or one of those managing positions. and the money sounds really tempting but im happy with doing what i love and thats writing code and creating new pieces of software that hopefully work very well and make someones life easier. i dont want to jump around between meetings. maybe when im older and have a family the money will be more tempting but right now im good with where i am.

Aye. With an SSD everything is smoother and faster in Windows. Works best if you surf/work a lot.

Since I'm not rich enough to get a 1TB SSD, it means I have all my games on mechanical drives and once I'm in a game, I can't tell the difference between SSD and no SSD. If you spend more time gaming, a more powerful GPU would help a lot.

Hyperthreading does not replace full cores. It will work like a real one, and it's better than nothing, but it will never be same as a real one.

a_block_of_wood got a reaction from 1swine1 in Building a PC - Questions about parts that are not a GPU or a CPU
Because the i5 4460 is a Haswell-refresh CPU, and only H97 or Z97 motherboard works directly out of the box with no hassle.

H81, B85, Q87, H87, Z87 will work with i5 4460, but they most likely need a Bios upgrade on the motherboard for it to work.

If you are buying the stuff and the computer shop guy assembled it for you then no worries, they will help you update the Bios. But if you bought the parts and assemble it yourself, the CPU may or may not work, and if you do not have an older Haswell CPU lying around to use it, and the motherboard you bought does not support updating bios without a CPU, then you're out of luck.

    -edit-
I got myself an Asrock H97 mini itx board. I know people say Asrock board isn't great, which I agree, if you compare it to the likes of Asus or Gigabyte. But I couldn't resist the value, it's so cheap and it came with onboard wireless AC that has reception stronger than anything I've ever owned.

However it's not without faults. The bluetooth is wonky (hey! most board doesn't even come with bluetooth), and the thermal reading other than the cpu core is unreliable. But it's a H97 board, it's not for those hardcore overclocker that need to monitor everything on their motherboard all the time anyway.

Intel probably did it just as a proof of concept so others would continue its implementation using their hardware. Something like an expensive commercial for their CPU.

a_block_of_wood reacted to Hieb in Please help me pick an Apu
As long as you're aware that the APU isn't suited to anything above 720P-900P gaming, then your best bet is to get an FM2+ motherboard (not just FM2) and then get an A8-7650K. FM2+ is a bit more recent, and the 7650K, even though it's an A8, almost always edges out the A10-6800K. It also has an updated architecture that provides a healthy performance boost over Piledriver/Richland (found in the A10-6800K) in some cases.

Keep in mind, too, that APUs require high-speed RAM to provide optimal gaming performance. Ideally you should be pairing an APU with 8GB of 2133 or 2400MHz RAM.

But if it's an option, going for an Intel i3, H81/B85/H87/H97 motherboard and a dedicated GPU will be miles better than an APU setup (assuming you get a GPU with GDDR5 such as an R7 260 or GTX 750). Don't let the number of cores and clock speed fool you - an Intel i3 is a much stronger processor in the majority of tasks than any AMD quad core CPU/APU. They're about even in perfectly threaded workloads (best case scenario for AMD), while the Intel is substantially faster in lighter workloads or workloads that don't max out every core (e.g. gaming, web development, etc. are areas where Intel is way better).
