rattacko123 reacted to BachChain in The end of a 30-year war - Microsoft claims to have finally solved Windows printer drivers
    Summary
Microsoft has announced plans to end support for third-party printer drivers in Windows by 2027. Replacing them will be a single "IPP Class Driver" which utilizes the "Mopria" standard for providing a universal interface for compatible printers and scanners.

About damn time. Although, there's always going to be that one printer that still needs manual drivers for some reason.

    so long thread short:
    - the thunderbolt ports run at 10Gb/s with the correct hardware and when the handshake happens
    - USB naming conventions are absolute garbage
    - if you want USB 3.2 gen2 (or USB 3.1 gen2 or TB or USB 3 10G, USB4 etc) you have to use the correct hardware within the spec

rattacko123 reacted to Neoxon in EU Parliament agrees on proposal to force Apple to use USB-C on all devices (including iPhones), only allows small devices like watches to go portless
The EU takes the next steps towards solidifying the USB-C mandate, with a specification that the wireless-only exception only applies to devices too small for a USB-C port (citing smart watches, health trackers, & some sports equipment as examples of this). And going by other sources, members of the EU are hoping to enact the mandate 6 months after ratification. So since Parliament is planning to approve this draft negotiating position at the May plenary session, the mandate will likely force Apple to switch to USB-C by the iPhone 15 (or earlier, such as the rumored iPhone SE redesign). AirPods will likely also have to make the switch, as they are big enough to fit a USB-C port in place of their existing Lightning ports. Likewise, the EU also expresses a desire to enforce a similar mandate for wireless charging by 2026, which may impact Apple's emerging MagSafe standard.
I'm glad that the EU is taking standardization seriously, while also leaving Apple with little choice but to go USB-C for future iPhones & AirPods. The original theory was that Apple would go portless to side-step the EU mandate. But not only does the supposed 6-month timeframe for enforcement after ratification not leave Apple with enough time to make the transition to going fully wireless with charging & data transfer (rumors indicate that Apple should've gone fully wireless by now, with no major signs of that happening with the iPhone 14), the specification that only small devices like smart watches & health trackers can go wireless-only effectively takes away Apple's loophole. So at this point, Apple has no choice but to go USB-C for iPhone & AirPods unless they want to face punishment from the EU.

Not sure where you got the "scaleable" from.
It's just called "Compression Attached Memory Module" or CAMM for short.

Anyway, I feel like people are very quick to brag their pitch forks over this. The TL;DR is that Dell has created their own DDR5 module that are basically two sticks combined into one. This means that regular sticks won't fit, you have to get these "dual stick in one stick" modules. We don't know how many or how few manufacturers will create these, nor do we know how much they will cost.
It does not mean Dell don't want you to upgrade your memory.
It does not mean Dell are locking out users from upgrading their memory.

Also, from what I know a lot of laptops don't even let you replace the RAM in them anymore (I know some ThinkPads don't let you, and I am pretty sure the Dell XPS 13 don't let you either, and Asus has a few as well). So while this might be seen as bad, it is not really that horrible compared to what some others are doing.
The reason for those laptops not letting you replace the RAM modules was because they used LPDDR4, and there is no SO-DIMM standard for LPDDR4 as far as I know.

    Summary
It has been in the works for quite awhile, but Intel is finally introducing a new ATX PSU spec. It sounds like ALL new >450w power supplies are going to have to abide by this spec or face higher component prices. This new spec will allow PSU's to provide 600w on one rail for next generation PCIE Gen 5 GPUS. These new PSUs will also be more durable as well as more power efficient.

As much as I look forward to getting rid of ugly 24pin ATX Cables/ 2/3x 8 pin PCIE cables, I can see this being a big issue. I can see a situation where 80% of Zen 4 (X670?) and Raptor Lake (Z790?) motherboards use the old spec with the 24 pin power connector, and the other 20% adopt the new standard. This is going to cause a really awkward transition phase where it is hard to recommend the route for builders to take. I can see there being a shortage of these new power supplies for sure. The 4090? is going to pull at a minimum 350 <  watts, so A LOT of people are going to be looking at new PSU's anyways, why not get the new spec? There is also a rumor that some of the AIB 3090tis are going to use the new 12+4 pin connector, while some will use 3x8 pin. What a mess.

    Summary
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang held a question and answer session with the press today, and the topic quickly turned to Intel's Foundry Services (IFS) initiative that will see Intel making chips for other companies as part of its IDM 2.0 initiative. Surprisingly, Huang confirmed that his company is considering using Intel's foundry to possibly make some of its chips.
Intel is now a direct competitor with Nvidia on both the CPU and GPU fronts, but Huang also explained that Intel and AMD have known Nvidia's secret roadmaps for years so he isn't paranoid about sharing more information.

Well, that was admittedly two revealing statements. One is that Nvidia is considering working with Intel's Foundry services which makes it seem that Intel's plan for IDM 2.0 might actually be working? That's rather interesting. It was also stated that Intel and AMD knew at least small bits and pieces of what Nvidia has been (and will) working on. That's sort of "what?" moment (for me at least, I was expecting corporate espionage to be the way to get such info). Now, whether will indeed make use of Intel's fabs and what they will utilise them for, we'll have to wait and see.

If @J-from-Nucleon actually would've liked to contribute sth, he could've compared this solution against features and pricing of competing optical solutions. As others have already said, TB cables, carrying general-purpose data lanes worth dozens of Gbit/s (essentially PCIe on a cable), are one of the hardest cable types to manufacture. If I remember correctly, they also require to be active (having a chipset in each ends connector).

    Oh fuck yes.
I was kind of tempted to get an OLED TV during this year's holiday sale, but decided to wait another year or two. If micro LED TVs (that don't cost millions of dollars) are finally starting to appear on the market then I might as well wait for that.

Not sure why you'd want 144Hz on your TV though. 120Hz is the perfect refresh rate for TV content. Once you go to 144Hz you need to do stuff like three-two pull down.

    Edit:
Another neat thing I read about Samsung's new TV's is that they also introduced a remote can be charged through Wi-Fi radio waves.
    https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/2/22860390/samsung-eco-remote-2022-solar-rf-harvesting-charging
I don't think changing or recharging batteries in a remote is a big issue we need to solve, but I think it's a fun concept. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that the energy it is able to collect from radio waves is extremely small, but hopefully it's enough for a couple of button presses.

We are really getting near the end game of monitors. The only thing better than this would be a monitor had with microLEDs. Once we have microLED 4k 120hz or 240hz displays, there really isn't much more for a monitor under 30 inches to achieve. Higher resolution or refresh rate wouldn't hardly be noticeable.

It just goes to show the security for all devices is important. We've seen this before during Pewdiepie vs T-Series in which Chromecasts and once again printers were easily exploited. A common issue is people having UPNP enabled on their routers, usually by default that causes the printers to be exposed to the internet. In a work environment, it's even more important as insecure printers can be used as a launching point for more advanced and serious attacks as seen with the Stuxnet attack and talked about in detail at Blackhat conventions
