  1. CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check. Basically it detects errors in files. This could be caused by the file itself being corrupt, a bad sector on the HDD/SSD, a bad SATA data cable etc. When writing the file, a small checksum is added to it. When the PC later reads that file, that checksum is re-calculated and compared with the first one. If those 2 checksums don't match, the PC/program/installer knows that the file is no good and you get this error. If downloading the driver again doesn't help, the corruption is most likely on the server that hosts the file. In that case you can download it as often as you like, it won't help. Look for another version, perhaps a slightly older driver will work just fine.
  2. Probably some royalty-free generic song. The melody does remind me of "Dreams" by Fleetwood mac.
  3. China eh? Don't bring a phone. Just don't. Leave it at home. https://www.pcmag.com/news/369368/china-is-installing-spyware-on-tourists-phones http://www.iphonehacks.com/2019/07/china-border-surveillance-install-spyware.html https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-03/china-forcing-tourists-install-spy-app-steals-personal-data ... and a couple thousand more links if you want You don't want the filthy stuff they install on tourists' phones. Such nation states usually embed their spyware in the device's firmware, which means it will persist through reinstalls, formats, resets etc. If they take your phone from your line of sight, plug anything into it or mess around with it for more than 3 seconds, you should factory reset it and then throw it in the nearest garbage can. They'll already have your entire history, but at least they can't just keep tracking you for the rest of your phone's life. Don't get one locally either, they can seize it at any moment, install their spyware and download all your data. If you do insist on being stupid and buying one, don't link it to any existing account and don't use it to contact anyone you know. At that point you may as well not have a phone. So don't bring one. EDIT : Same with laptops. Or visits to the US or Russia. You just can't trust those countries' governments and security agencies, so don't take electronics across the border unless you plan on throwing them away.
  4. I just got back from work, turned on the TV about a minute before the 2nd plane hit. My dad can still point out the tile on which he was standing when he heard that JFK was shot. Same here, I can point to the exact place where I was standing when I first looked at that TV screen on 9/11. When the 2nd plane hit, I still vividly remember thinking "oh shit, this is an attack and it's going to change the world". Looking back on it, I've been lucky. My teenage years started when the cold war ended, and I was in my early 20s when 9/11 happened. The 90s really were a good time to grow up, none of the worries that the previous or next generation had/have to deal with.
  5. As technology advances, so do the neat tricks of the kids that use it. This one is really nice though. Congrats on 1337 posts, by the way.
  6. Joking aside, my main PC is still on Windows 7 and I have no intention of going to Windows 10. I'm slowly getting ready to move it over to Linux by January. Probably Mint, although I might go with Debian. The secondary PC has been on Linux Mint since last winter, the laptop has been on Mint for about 5 years now. I do have a full Windows 8.1 license. Might put that in dualboot on the secondary rig if I am having too much trouble finding replacements for some of the programs/tools I currently use. That should still get updates until January 2023.
  7. Yeah, this is a known problem. Looks like WindowsCentral has a guide for fixing this, either by uninstalling the update or by doing a registry edit. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-fix-high-cpu-usage-after-installing-update-kb4512941-windows-10
  8. My phone supports wireless charging and came with a charging pad, but I prefer to charge it over USB 2.0 instead. Slower charging is more healthy for the battery in the long run and I fully intend to keep this phone for at least 5 years.
  9. Nope, the area you circled is nearly black. Do you have a smartphone or tablet nearby? Open this page on that, see how different the pictures look compared to your PC screen.
  10. Yup, those grey areas on the right are very obvious. RGB codes for those are in the high 20s to low 30s, so 2.5-3 times as obvious as in the first pic.,
  11. Ooh, that is so tempting ... ? You're right, they aren't black but rather a very very dark grey. having large dark areas with the exact same color is normal in videos, very similar colors are encoded like that to save space/bandwidth. Normally you won't notice it, but if the colors (or in this case greys) aren't displayed correctly you will. My guess is that the OP's display is simply struggling with the very dark shades of grey, causing them to show up a lot brighter than they should be.
  12. The screenshot you provided in post 1 is what the GPU is sending to the display. If we are seeing nothing wrong with that, it means your GPU is putting out the correct colors. In that case it's probably the display (or the display cable) that is to blame rather than the GPU. But if you happen to have another GPU on hand, it never hurts to try that.
  13. Actually most of the space is taken up by James' My Little Pony collection.
  14. Yeah, that might have been my problem. We were primarily a leveling guild who just happened to have enough level 60 (and later 70) players to do raids. That does attract another kind of people than hardcore raiding guilds do.
  15. As a DRP3 owner I am familiar with that problem. It's nothing that a flashlight (to see what you're doing) and a flathead screwdriver can't deal with. You just have to be careful not to slip off the little tab, or put some electrical tape around the tip to somewhat protect the motherboard if you do.
  16. I check Ebay for recently sold examples of said item. That gives me a pretty good indication of what people are actually willing to pay for it.
  17. True. Then again I can verify that running an 80+ player guild is on a whole other level than being a mere Raid Leader. Every argument between members is a potential minefield. You need to be on top of your managing skills if you don't want to see the whole thing implode.
  18. No, that problem persists in the US because politicians were more than happy to look the other way when pharmaceutical companies got tons of people addicted to opioids in the form of legal prescription drugs. And the dealers are just using the high demand to make an easy buck. It's nowhere near as bad in most other developed countries, just like we have no real gun problems here either. Anyway : As was already pointed out, the amount of data they are asking is just insanely out of proportion to whatever crime they might be trying to investigate. Hopefully both Apple and Google tell them to get lost.
  19. Sure, a lot of horrible things can happen. However when it comes to data loss there is an easy way to either prevent it from happening or to minimize the impact. Yeah, I probably could rebuild and recreate almost everything if I ever were to lose my most important data. However it would take at least a year (of 40-hour work weeks) to do so, and it still wouldn't bring back the photos and videos of all the people and pets I've lost over the years. Those can't be replaced, so I'd rather not lose them to begin with. As I said before, a lot of people here found out about the importance of backups the hard way. If you want to join that club someday, be my guest.
  20. No, but you can put lengthy jail sentences on illegal possession. Give it a decade or two and the amount of gun-related crimes will drop dramatically.
  21. Needs a lot more suspension travel. Knowing apple, they'll want to keep the Apple Car owners in the Apple ecosystem, which means they'll be driving ...
  22. Doesn't work. When I sent my resumé to the ESA (European Space Agency) I mentioned my 2400 hours of KSP and attached links to footage of all 5 successful flights, including the one where I got into a full orbit. I didn't even get a reply.
  23. What? Windows 10? Nah, you're not alone. ?
