  1. Oh, so now Google is pausing it globally too? I had only read that it was only going to be paused in the EU. They're either telling a different story to different instances or they decided to do it worldwide after Apple's announcement that they would stop all "grading". I had already updated the original topics regarding the recordings, but perhaps it does indeed warrant a topic of its own.
  2. It is enough if you use the card for mining, but indeed not enough for gaming.
  3. Update : After Google's announcement that they will temporarily stop listening to recordings made in the EU, Apple has now done the same thing globally and will add an opt-out option via a software update. https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/2/20751270/apple-stops-contractors-siri-voice-recordings-privacy-opt-out
  4. UPDATE : The Data Protection Authority in Hamburg (Germany) launched a deep investigation into Google's practices and started a procedure to forbid them from listening to recordings. Google decided not to wait for a verdict and has announced that they will stop manually reviewing recordings made in the EU for the next 3 months. https://datenschutz-hamburg.de/assets/pdf/2019-08-01_press-release-Google_Assistant.pdf
  5. a) Nothing special, just a disgruntled employee making up accusations ... assuming that the poster is in fact an employee and any of this is true. b) I don't really care if any of it is true. I don't use PIA because I simply don't trust them, both because of the people involved and because of the jurisdiction they're in. Right now they may not store any data (assuming that this is still true), but as soon as the government gives them a gag order telling them to start storing data and/or forwarding it directly to the intelligence agencies, you're pretty much screwed. And the worst bit is that you'll only find out about it if someone decides to become the next Snowden. That's why anybody who cares about privacy should avoid any VPN in a 5 eyes country, or a 14 eyes one for that matter.
  6. The meshify works better with two 140mm fans in the front than with three 120mm ones. So I'd suggest two NF-A14 PWM as intakes and a NF-S12A PWM in the rear as exhaust. Even with the meshify's relatively open front, the front fans still need to suck air through the mesh and the filter so you're better off with neutral or pressure-optimized fans than you are with airflow-optimized ones.
  7. Aza Raskin, the guy who came up with infinite scrolling, deeply regrets doing so. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/i-m-so-sorry-says-inventor-of-endless-online-scrolling-9lrv59mdk BBC goes a bit more in-depth about how it is habit-forming. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-44640959 The thing about infinite scroll is this : When you reach the end of a page in a multi-page thread, you consciously make a decision whether you go to the next page or not. With infinite scroll you just keep on scrolling and your brain never gets that signal that triggers you to decide if you want to continue reading or do something else instead. So you just keep on reading far more than you normally would. Even those who claim they have no problem with it would waste far less time. So yeah, I'm all for banning it. As for those who don't like the government telling them what they can and cannot do, feel free to drive without a seatbelt, ride without a helmet, and be sure to use plenty of asbestos and lead-based paint in your houses.
  8. Ordered a 2019 Yamaha MT-03 in Midnight Black. I should have it in about 3-4 weeks. I actually wanted the grey with fluo yellow one but that color was only available last year. Oh well, with the black one at least I won't have to clean the rims every 2 days.
  9. A lot also depends on when you book your tickets, or from what device.
  10. Sounds like a PSU issue indeed. If you have access to another PC, try plugging your motherboard, drives and GPU into that one's power supply and see if it still crashes.
  11. Yeah, it's a simple workaround for an unfortunate problem. If you do decide to dremel them after all, by all means post pics so we can see if it's worth doing. Do keep in mind that you'll void the warranty though.
  12. I wouldn't recommend dremeling those corners, you never know how thin that plastic is. I run 2 Predators myself (main display in front of me, secondary one to the right at a 30-ish degree angle) so I'm familiar with the problem. What I did was take a roll of wide black tape (I used cloth tape but duct tape is also an option), cut a strip the height of my monitor and folded it lengthwise so that I had 2-3mm of sticky edge left. I then taped that to the side of my off-center monitor. This is enough to completely black out the area between the screens. It doesn't reduce the width between the displays, but at least everything between them is solid black now so the bezel isn't as distracting.
  13. Galaxy S9+ on Lineage OS. No plans to upgrade, I waited for the S10 to come out so the prices could drop. Fully intend to keep it for 4-5 years. Samsung NP900X4D-A01 on Linux Mint. Had this one since March 2013. Still plenty fast enough and the battery still has 87% of its design capacity. There's a bright spot on the screen though, and that does get on my nerves whenever I use it. Not going to pay $400 for a replacement top housing for a 6 year old laptop, so I've been looking for a new laptop for 2 years now. Only the Matebook Pro X tickles my fancy, but I don't use a laptop often enough anymore to justify its pricetag.
  14. Recently gave the game another go after a character reset last year (some a-hole dropped money on me and somehow I got banned for that). The Dominator can apparently be fully tuned no matter what level you have or how many races you've won (probably a result of the Arena Death Race update thingy). It also wheelies when you rev it up before releasing the handbrake. If you don't use the handbrake it'll spin the wheels like it should though. Dominator test 2.mp4 (fully tuned, street suspension) Back in the GTA:SA days I was involved in the modding community as a handling line writer, so I have a pretty good idea what's going on there. In fact I purposedly used this exact behavior for hovercars, flying bathtubs and whatever other silly idea the 3D modelers came up with whenever they got bored of doing proper vehicles. The way Rockstar lets the cars lean more or less is by changing a single number in the handling line that determines the height of the center of gravity. The higher they put it, the more the car will lean over and the more likely it will be to roll over if you push it too far. The suspension also has some influence on the amount of lean, but that's irrelevant for this conversation. If Rockstar made a typo (or changed something about how the game interprets that number and forgot to adjust it on those cars), the game can think that the center of gravity is below the axles or even below the ground, in which case the car starts leaning over the wrong way (the CG is still pushed to the outside in the corner, but because it's below the axle/ground and the axle acts as a pivot point the body now leans to the inside). Pretty sure that's what's happening here. Nothing you can realistically do about it. With the correct tools and knowledge you can fix this yourself, but as soon as you try to go online the game will notice that your handling line file doesn't match the official one and you'll be labeled a cheater (or "hacker", as the kids call it nowadays). No prizes for guessing what happens then.
  15. Tell her you'll have the place (and specifically the boxes) checked for fingerprints. If she then admits she took it, break up with her, call the cops and press charges. You don't want to be with someone who steals from you whenever it suits her. If she doesn't say anything, have the boxes checked for fingerprints and press charges against the thief no matter who it is. If it is her ... I guess you know what to do about the relationship.
  16. If RAM clearance is an issue, you can always move the fan upwards a bit. Not the prettiest of sights, but then again neither is a 120mm wide fan on a 150mm wide cooler.
  17. If you're going for air cooling in the Meshify C (and the Define C as well) I can only recommend two 140mm intake fans at the front and a single 120mm exhaust at the rear. Going for three or four 120mm intakes is only going to add noise and turbulence, so it's pretty pointless. Only in extreme cases (dual open-air GPUs, a heavily overclocked CPU or if the owner wants to use a bad CPU cooler) I'd remove the top panel and add another 120mm exhaust in the top rear slot. What you have in mind shouldn't need that 4th fan, although personally I'd try removing the top panel (there's a magnetic dust filter in the box to replace it with) and seeing if passive venting makes enough of a difference to justify the reduced sound dampening.
  18. Humans have a very low tolerance for heat. 35°C only feels lukewarm but anything above 40°C is already too painful to hold for more than a couple of seconds. So properly measuring the temperature is the only way to know if it indeed runs hot. As @SupaKomputa says, test the RAM one stick at a time to find the bad one. Also check if the manufacturer gives a lifetime warranty (many do) and get in touch with them if they do.
  19. The Meshify comes with a pair of Fractal's own 120mm fans. You can keep the rear one if you want, but for the front I'd advise a pair of 140m fans. 2x 140mm intake at the front and a 120mm exhaust at the rear is pretty much the most common setup for the Define/Meshify C systems. The top mounts only really get used if people need a serious liquid cooling setup, but you are clearly going for air cooling. Which fans to get? the BeQuiet and Noctua fans are universally praised for their build quality and silent operation, but they are among the most expensive. Seeing as you already have a BeQuiet cooler in your list, I'd go that route. Perhaps get a 120mm BeQuiet fan for the rear as well so it all fits together aesthetically.
  20. We already discussed Alexa and Google Home, so ... Apple also has subcontractor employees listen to Siri recordings. Pretty much the same story as the others. Recordings are being listened to by transcribers to improve the speech recognition and understand dialects etc. Nice to hear that the recordings are not linked to actual users, although the Google leak clearly showed that such recordings can contain personal information which allows users to be identified. And pretty much like Amazon and Google, they pick up stuff that wasn't intended for the device too. I'll try to add English sources later on. This was to be expected really. I figured I'd post it anyway just to show that everyone does it and all of these voice assistants can't be trusted to keep your private conversations actually private. Update : After Google's announcement that they will temporarily stop listening to recordings made in the EU, Apple has now done the same thing globally and will add an opt-out option via a software update. https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/2/20751270/apple-stops-contractors-siri-voice-recordings-privacy-opt-out
  21. Booby trap it. All you need is some wires, an ignitor and a stick of dynamite. The second someone tries to open the side panel or lift up the PC, it goes kaboom. You'll find that the remains of the PC and those of the thief will still be at the office the next morning. The police will identify him/her eventually.
  22. Could be worse, a couple of years ago the airport at Orly (France) had to shut down due to a bug in Windows 3.1 https://news.vice.com/article/windows-31-is-still-alive-and-it-just-killed-a-french-airport?utm_source=vicenewstwitter
