Pofi got a reaction from leadeater in could you hypothetically install your OS into your RAM?
Yes, but if you're doing this just for performance I'd recommend looking into PCIe SSDs instead. Far more reliable and not too much slower, also - much much much less trouble. I'd pick that over RAM any time.

Pofi reacted to Lorunification in switching motherboards results in losing data? y/n?
    Hi,

It certainly depends, if chipset drivers and the lot are the same it MIGHT work out of the box.

This is however NOT the case in most situations. It is far more likely that windows just plainly refuses to boot properly as this is quite a significant change in hardware specs.
The least thing that is going to happen is that you need to reactivate your version of Windows.

You should almost certainly plan in half a day of fixing issues even if Windows boots after the change. The better solution is clearly to just reinstall Windows after the hardware change.

As always I strongly recommend a proper backup of all your data before trying anything.

However, the data on your harddrive is unaffected by this change. Even if Windows refuses to boot you can always just boot from anything else and access your data as usual.

    Regards

i'm gonna push for giving debian another try, but dont bother with a graphical interface, do everything trough SSH and (s)FTP.

ubuntu server is worth a look as well, especially if you're new, because of the massive amount of information avaliable from the ubuntu community.

you *could* also dive head-first into arch, and potentially hit a brick wall on the way down, but you might get a nack for it, and then its very easy to start liking the amount of control you get.

generally when working with large amounts of data and/or extensive use of scripts its very nice to have the OS have as little overhead as possible, to have more resources available for the actual work.

if getting rid of the GUI saves you a gigabyte of ram, its very much recommended to do so, because thats a whole extra gig for your scripts to nibble on.

Pofi reacted to nicklmg in Mineral Oil PC Kit Giveaway
A few weeks ago we received some VERY sad news - due to a patent troll, our friends at Puget Systems have been forced to cease production and sales on their awesome series of mineral oil PC starter kits (you can read more about what happened here). This hits pretty close to home for our company, as Puget's mineral oil systems piqued Luke's interest a few years ago, which eventually led to him building his own mineral oil system.

First off, we would like to thank Puget Systems for providing this awesome service to the community. As they have mentioned quite a few times in the past, this was a passion project for them more than anything else, and we are sad to see it end this way.

But now that we have the sad news out of the way, there is a pretty sweet silver lining for the Linus Tech Tips community...

Since they cannot sell the kits that they currently have in stock, Puget Systems is GIVING AWAY four of their remaining mineral oil PC kits to four lucky members of this community. There are three Mini ITX kits and one MATX kit available.

Unfortunately, this giveaway is only open to residents of the Continental United States and Canada. We wish we could give everyone in the world the mineral oil PC hook-ups, but it isn't feasible to ship these kits internationally

    How do I enter?
Leave a comment below to enter in the draw. One comment (entry) per user. I have a feeling that Puget will be checking this thread periodically, so feel free to leave some positive words for them - were you inspired by their awesome kits? Did they get you interested in mineral oil PCs? Are there any cool projects you would like to see them take on in the future?

Also, please mention (in your comment) which variation of kit you would prefer if you are chosen as one of the lucky winners. This will NOT have an impact on winner selection, but it will make it easier to assign a kit to each winner.

Entries close December 18 at 4pm PT, so be sure to leave you comment here before that time. The winner will be selected on December 19.

    IMPORTANT NOTE
If you are lucky enough to win one of these kits, you MUST provide us with proof of purchase for mineral oil BEFORE the kit will be shipped to you. These are four of the last kits available from Puget, and they are only going to be given away to community members who are serious about building a mineral oil PC.

    Thanks everyone, and good luck!

EDIT: I've seen some concerns in the thread about getting the mineral oil by December 19. There will be a grace period of one week for winners to provide us with proof of purchase. Just reply and let us know that you will be purchasing the oil when you can, and forward the proper paperwork when it is available.

a 970 costs roughly the same amount as 770 (at least in north america) and is ~15-20% faster... Also uses less electricity. Not sure why you'd consider a 770

P.S. I have a 770 myself. - bought it before 970 came out, was expecting it to be far more expensive...

    possible, but not ideal.
A 550W would be nearly maxed out all the time.
You don't want to do that.  That is why it is always good to have a more powerful PSU than you need.

I don't think u guys realize this but yes, as most people said the load would normally be around 450 or 500W and most likely less than that, BUUUUUT as I have stated before - you want your PSU to be way above what your system is using just in case..... So stop commenting how you can do this on 550W and nobody needs over 600W, cuz yes, u can, and I realize that, but no, it's not good for ur computer....

Yes, but I would recommend ~750W just to be on the safe side. Being close to the limit of your PSU is not really the best thing you can do.

I would not recommend a cpu cooler. Stock cooler will work just fine, no problem... unless you're doing ultra extreme overclocking which i assume you're not.

"power on to full power" does NOT mean 100% CPU usage!!!!!
    SERIOUSLY!
It means they ramp up the CPU clock speed to turbo which gives better performance than having it idle at 1.2GHz.
    Really guys? Learn to read.

Interesting... Maybe they could have that as an option in the bios or something for those who want to turn it off. I for one would prefer a slightly choppy scroll instead of loud fans.
Also, people actually use 2 finger scroll? I always looked at it as a gimmick.

No. Do not. It's highly unlikely to work. If you do decide to experiment though - use the exact same amount of ram and same clock speed, also do check CAS. if it's not the same - chances are it won't work. I honestly extremely don't recommend doing this. There is a chance it will work, even with different specs, but just don't.... and please get exact same specs if you do.

Compatible - yes... but stock fan for cpu should be fine if you're not going to do extreme overclocking, i wouldn't waste the money on separate cooler. Also a gtx 770 is barely a few dolars more expensive, but has roughly 10% increased performance.... check it out.

How much GPU memory do you have? and there is a default amount of memory that a program is allowed to use up, no single program can access all 100% of your RAM - you should note that. Quite sure the limit might be around 2gb - google about that, I forget how it works right now, don't want to give any misleading info.

Max, always max. it doesn't matter if your min or average is 60 or 70C, if your max melts your cpu or gpu - averages won't matter (ofc it won't melt because they have safety to shut themselves off, but that's not a good thing to force your computer to do). Keep everything under 80C as a rule of thumb, better under 75C. It will work above these temperatures, but will certainly reduce the hardware's lifespan.

And the other is found at %public%\desktop (Items in this folder are shown for all users on the computer)
