It does not bring happiness to everyone. Or any. It is like food. Without it, life is difficult. With it, life is less difficult. But one's "life does not result from their possessions".

Money doesn't solve *all* problems. But it can make things easier. Although, I couldn't really chill, even if I had millions in the bank.

First you wanna find out how you keep a big chunk of what you have without paying too much taxes - Hello, we're your income taxes and we'll try to rip you off.
And I don't mean scamming taxes, I mean re-investing. And if you're gonna re-invest, you should do it in a manner that doesn't hurt anyone.

But I can agree on that having money makes things easier depending on what you want in life. Materialistic at least.

But there are downsides to being rich. Like I initially said, first of all you want to make sure that you keep what you... got from that post train robbery. And then you really want to find out why you suddenly got 500 friends who ask for favours when you had like only 5 last week?

Being rich comes with challenges as does everything in life. I wouldn't mind having the money to travel without having second thoughts on it. But what I couldn't do would be being rich and not do anything. Like, when you say 'chill', that's a word I like to use for Sundays. I enjoy working, I enjoy helping out. So I'd probably end up building my own helping-hand company. So no chill for me.^^

And also, all I really want is being able to stay healthy, meet with friends and enjoy my hellish black coffee every morning. As long as I can achieve that, I'm pretty happy. Tho, travelling would make it even better, I gotta give in to that.

Q: Is your budget maxed out at $200?

I can't really recommend buying such an old machine, although I was running a late 2011 MBP 13" up until last year. Fairly fast with an SSD and RAM upgrade and yes, I even edited videos on it and used it for Photoshop. The screen is not the best, the resolution is low and even if you can edit videos with it, expect it to be slow at times and the scrubbing through the timeline can be... slow as well. Especially if you're gonna edit 1080p.

If you really want to buy one and can one in good condition for cheap, here are some key points you should look out for:

    - i5 at least 2nd Generation minimum.
    - 8 GB RAM minimum.
    - Intel GPU only.
(The dedicated GPUs of that era are just junk and will cause more problems than anything else: see https://www.youtube.com/user/rossmanngroup)
    - make sure the battery is fairly new or you can get a replacement for cheap.

A better choice would be to save up to around $450-550 and get a 2013ish MBP to be honest. Sometimes you can get the 2013 MBPs cheaper.

    MacOS:

    - The trackpad. Honestly there is no Windows realm equivalent to the MacBook trackpads. And gestures. Once you become accustomed to the trackpad gestures, they're making your life and workflow so much easier.

    - We don't have to eat updates for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Apple doesn't shove updates down your throat like it's the next best hotdog.

    - Spotlight. CMD+spacebar. One of the best search function integrations I've ever used. No matter if I need to quickly open an app, find a file or go to a website right from the desktop or where ever in the system I am.

    - Terminal. I love terminal. And, most probably don't know that Nano comes with every Mac. Most people probably don't even know what Nano is.  I love Nano ?

    - Stability. MacOS is stable (if you don't jump on the next best iteration right away) and snappy, even on fairly older hardware. The optimisation is just amazing.

    - Seamless messaging and calling between devices. I can answer calls from my iPhone on my iMac or MacBook if I'm logged in with the same iCloud account. Same goes for text messages and FaceTime.

Given, there are some things MacOS is missing but Magnet for example brings the snapping feature for just 99 cents and it's totally worth it.

    Windows (Pro):

    - Hyper-V integration. No 3rd party software needed for virtualisation. HV isn't perfect but it works for the most part. And it's a free feature on the Pro (and up) versions.

    - GPEdit. Group Policy Editor. If you really need to stop these updates or just want to configure the system to your liking, this is the way to go.

That's actually a great idea. Steam at least will give you the IP of the last login. And with that information the cops don't really have 'much' work (depends on how many donuts they consume of course). IP + ISP = Adress and the cops just need to knock on the door.

For everyone who needs some sort of preventive measure (as far as it goes), try a combination of

    https://preyproject.com

    and

    https://www.pulseway.com

The free account at Prey gives you three devices to track. They also work via IP. You can set up one 'control zone', your home for example and when a device leaves the premises, you'll get notified via email. It works well.

Pulsway is not really thought for it but it can also help you to track the IP of your device. The free account gives you two devices to monitor. If the IP changes or if another user logs in, you'll get notified via email or even in the app (iOS, Android) on your smartphone.

I know that no software is perfect and people, like if they know their way around tech, would wipe the hard drive anyways.

But you can bait them. Have your main account always password secured and set up a second account that doesn't ask for a password (kind of like the Guest Account on a Mac). If they're dumb enough to try to log in into that account (which oh wonder works because it doesn't ask for a password) and are even dumber and connect your computer / laptop to a wifi network, bang, IP in your inbox.

Just make sure the bait account doesn't have admin rights.

Edit: Always keep a record of serial numbers of your parts and if possible MAC addresses somewhere safe. That also helps to get stolen parts back. It's a small chance but it's one.

True. But for the same reason you can't really recommend any product running Windows 10 for Microsoft's update policy alone. Actually the realm is pretty messy overall. Apple has to fight with its hardware problems atm and Microsoft has trouble software wise. I don't know which is worse tbh.

And yes, it's always said that just a small portion of customers are affected but if you're one of the lucky 1%, it doesn't matter how many are affected or not.

Many of us here are stubbornly resistant to change when it comes to operating systems. I want this thread to highlight the features of someone's chosen OS that someone who doesn't regularly use the OS may not know.

    I'll start.

Windows: The windows "Snap" feature (dragging a window to the top or sides of the monitor) is freaking wonderful. I have NO idea why Mac OS hasn't implemented this yet. Yes, you can download a multitude of programs to make it work, but it should be standard.

Mac: Mac has "hot corners" that you can use to perform actions. Not to mention it's "expose" is much better than windows. (Move your mouse to a corner to instantly display all windows currently open, in a nice organized fashion.) You can also use the corners to do things like lock the computer or make the computer fall asleep/turn the screen off. I personally use the last one every night. Also mac did "multiple desktops" right (mainly because it stole it from linux), where as windows.... did not. I honestly had to google if windows HAD multiple desktops (it does.) Anyway, hot corners changes a workflow wonderfully and allows you to do sometimes complex things with just a flick of the mouse.

Also... Time Machine on Mac. Time machine is honestly the best backup program I have EVER used. It is so seemless. I've tried multiple free backup programs on windows and they all don't work... well. I mean they work, but none work as seemless as time machine. Maybe the non-free ones work better. Time machine really is wonderful. It's so easy your mother could use it. Can you say that about any windows backup solutions?

That's a sad truth. But I'd rather go with a used "Pro" laptop (which kinda excludes the actual Apple lineup  ) than a brand new consumer product. But dude's budget of 2.5k isn't that bad of a start.

    Bluetooth to the max.
Like if they let me us a bluetooth headset without a cable and on top let me stream music and videos from my phone to the console and to the TV / Amp from there, I'd even switch consoles.

And if they let me use my Xbox controller on the PS5 I'd definitely switch because to be honest, Playstation has had the better exclusive games for years now. But that alone wouldn't be a reason to switch for me. But full bluetooth compatibility? That would be a blast.

I switched from a gaming rig to an Xbox One S about two years ago.
I was fed up with nVidia driver issues, the constant upgrading of components and this atrocity called Windows 10.

I'm still not sure if I made the right decision though.
Getting used to a controller was pretty hard at first but I managed, especially thanks to single player FPS/3rd person shooters.

Games are usually higher priced on Xbox (even PS4 games seem to have better offers sometimes).

Frame rates are lower as is resolution. If you're far enough away from your TV it shouldn't matter much, resolution at least. If you're accustomed to 60fps, you will see the difference.

Hardware wise it's cheaper tho. Software wise limited and mostly more expensive (no more steam offers^^).

What you won't have problems with (usually) is OS updates. Even games can update while the console is sleeping which is a plus.

Overall: I sold my gaming rig for about 1,500, got the Xbox on sale for about 250 (1tb version) and so far only had to replace a controller. Died hitting a wall lol

Oh, sound might be a thing you wanna consider. Most headsets are cable and are connected to the controller. Xbox one S for example only has an optical output so if you want to connect a wireless headset or an amp / sound system, it needs to support that. USB headsets don't work on XBOS. - Don't know about PS4 or XBOne X.

As toxicity, I usually have voice chat off.

The good reason is that they know Apple fanboys won't complain, they would just buy a new one.
And it gives a more reason for fanboys to buy the new ones instead of complaining or buying from another reasonable company.
