try rending with an i5 then an i7 and you will see a difference in speeds. rendering and video editing takes advantage of more threads or cores. since rending is very multi threaded.  but while the xeon has powerful multicore performance it also has strong single core to back it up and at the price of an i5 that is a no brainer if your in need of a budget CPU that can do multi threaded apps and gaming as well. plus the motherboards for the Xeon CPU are the consumer b85 chipset boards so they are $50 minimum

get the i5, any amount of overclocking (even if you get a chip forged in the kitchen of lord GabeN himself) from the i3 will not compete with the i5 on a stock cooler.

Does not matter, pick any one and learn it.  My first 6300 champ was Singed, I think.  Man, I had a lot of fun top lane with him.

You can OC on a Z97 Fatal1ty Killer board with your 4790k, whether you reach 4.5 is dependent on your voltage, chip and cooling. I would never go above 4.2Ghz with the stock cooler. Even a $25 air cooling solution will give you a decent kick up to 4.5Ghz without too much excess heat.

i've checked all of those already according to ssl's guide above. and i don't have the time to mess with the more advanced stuff. since i've been eyeing the schiit magni/modi for i while, might as well pull the trigger now

i also have a gigabyte z97 (gaming 5) unfortunately, gigabyte mobos dont have adaptive voltages (dammit) so the only option you have is setting up adaptive voltages (annoying af and im too lazy to do) like prokon has said.

hmm, my cpu just failed p95 at 102 bclk x45. i lowered it down to 101.5 and il see how that goes

Why? Because people that only follow hype said so? The 4690k is a monster for a i5, more than enough for most games and the games it's not enough for the 6600k isn't ether. The 970 is a fucking beast, and while the 390 might edge out a few more fps it's not as stable as the 970. The 970 also murders the 390 in Gameworks games.
Don't fall for it, you done good and will be very happy once it's built.
