  1. I've been thinking about taking over the Marantz. I'll just need to talk him into it and of course make sure that the needle is the only thing that needs changing. Though I saw that you can still buy replacement part on Ebay for that particular model if anything else needs some love, pretty cool. And thanks for recommending a cartridge too! If I decide to go that route (and manages to talk dad into it), I'll need to buy an phono preamp since my current setup doesn't include one. Do you happen to have any recommendations here too?
  2. 100mbit up, 30mbit down ~70 TV-channels IP-telephony Support with technicians coming to our house within an hour of calling Local ISP with about 500 households connected, which results in stability and consistency throughout the day My neighbourhood signed a deal with the company so they laid down all the fibre for free (all the way into the house) as long as we promised to be connected for a minimum three year period We've had them for six years, only thing changed was a price drop... We pay about $35 a month, including everything above. Not really a feature, but feels good man.
  3. I would also like to know how WiDi actually performs. I'd love to have like a 32"-46" TV as an auxiliary monitor for my laptop (LG has non-smart ones with built in WiDi and IPS-panels for a reasonable price). Since I move around in the room I don't want to be connected through HDMI; WiDi seems (at least on paper) to be the perfect solution.
  4. The Essential II Phono USB looks to be pretty solid, gonna look into it more. Thanks! Do you have any idea how well the USB-thing sounds? As far as I understand the recording quality usually is very poor. Yeah, the dream would be to have a Technics 1200s or 1210s because of the high build- and audio quality. A bonus is the availability to DJ on them... I understand that far, direct-driven is (at least according to most people) the way to go. Reliability is kind of a big deal because I want to be able to use it for at least a couple of years before the need to upgrade. Needles come in such a variety, it's kind of hard for a newbie like myself to actually understand what the difference is since, well, I've only ever heard one needle on one record player. But a needle upgrade is really only a concern if I find the stock one on whatever turntable I decide to buy doesn't sound as I'd like. I'm just a bit confused since I've read around a bit about needles and some say certain needles are way better for certain genres, hence why I brought it up. Audio Technica does have a model that seems good on paper, the LP120USB. But I have no idea what to make of it since some reviewers directly compares it to the 1200s, which are at least twice as expensive... That makes it kind of hard to make out how well it actually performs on a day-to-day basis for someone like me, a newbie looking for a player that delivers quality sound and at least to some degree high build quality.
  5. I haven't really looked around too much simply because I don't really know which models are good respectively bad. Reading reviews is one thing, hearing what other actual users say is another. Any special model Technics you would recommend looking out for? I've heard mixed things about Pro-Jects, but some models sure look good on paper. Any particular model you would recommend?
  6. I would love to have one as the build quality is excellent, but it's way above my current budget.
  7. Do you know what speed your internet service provider is supposed to deliver?
  8. Hey everyone, what's up? First time posting a thread so bare with me if it's in the wrong section. So, I've finally decided to take the step into the vinyl world, but there's one problem: I'm not really sure what to buy! Dad have a Marantz 6100 (from 1984?) but the quality of the rest of his gear is kinda weak, and his needle is long due to replace, so I really don't have anything to compare with. I'd like to get some recommendation from you guys on what to buy. Here's what I'm searching for: Turntable As high audio quality as possible within the budget Build quality, I want it to last Preferably with a built in preamp Detachable cables, for obvious reasons 33, 45 & 78 is a must! Needle EITHER something that can play electronic music (dnb, trance, house) without losing too much detail OR something that is as uncoloured as possible within the budget. Bonus (things that aren't essential). I'd like to be able to digitalize my records. Is a turntable with built in USB actually a good idea or will I lose too much quality/will it introduce any defects? What's the options here? Any dollar saved on the turntable/needle is a dollar towards more music! Budget I'd like to keep it under $500 for the turntable, and maybe an additional $250 for a needle. Please note, I don't want this thread to derail into a vinyl versus digital thread. I know why I like vinyl, no need to discuss it here.
  9. Hey Linus & the community, first post on the forum. I found you on the NCIX channel back in 2010 while looking up unboxings. You had a different style, laid back but still serious with the actual content. Today I'm a subscriber to both NCIX and LinusTechTips on Youtube and I've watched every WAN-show episode live (even though you air in the middle of the night for me, local time...). I've learned so much about hardware through your videos and I guess I just want to say thanks. Furthermore, I'd love to win me that desktop. I'm into graphical design and CAD-work, but my main computer is a 13" ultrabook... Thanks Linus and the team, keep it up!
