In case you still do want a DAC/AMP combo, I would recommend the Audinst HUD-MX1 or now MX2. I've been using one (MX1)  for about a year now, after having a Fiio E10 for a while, and am pretty happy with it. I have both my stereo and an assortment of headphones hooked up to it (including HD800, DT990, DT1350) and it is a definite upgrade over my onboard Sound. The difference to the Fiio E10 is far less noticable and if you don't need the 6.3mm jack and just want something solid, I'd recommend the E10.

I believe these have a switch or interchangeable cups with or with out vents and open or closed sounding or in between setting on the switch of the custom one pro headphones from beyerdynamic.

E10 is a solid choice for anyone not using their equipment on the go.

EDIT: for anyone not using their gear on portable devices. ;) newkid.

The E17 will still sound better than the E10 regardless of bitrate. It has a much better quality Wolfson DAC in it which is superior to the one in the E10. There would be other factors that make it better as well, in saying this though it wouldn't be worth it unless your cans are good enough to take advantage of a better dac. Any headphones will sound better with an amp and a dac even low ohm high sensitivity ones, with cans that are easily powered a dac is probably a better choice over an amp but of course both is better than just one.

My vote is for Beyerdynamic DT770 80 Ohms or DT990pro.  Open or closed, your choice.  My DT990pro drives fine off my Galaxy Nexus.  An amp is much louder, though.

Amazon is your friend.  NCIX is selling a few of them too.
