  1. I couldn't tell you how or why but the citywide dump is going on here and I managed to find a damn virtual boy in the trash. WHAT

And yes, it works. I need to replace the dying ribbons though

  2. Nooooooo I was doing so good getting really good luck in the game and then I hit really bad luck and got a read error and the game froze

Probably my favourite shot of today. I really need to get a real camera.

  4. Headed to wappapello for eclipse viewing. Skys look... promising. Fingers crossed!

  5. Anyone else traveling to see the eclipse? I've traveled over 600 miles to a friend's family's place where I'm staying for the nights, then hopefully we'll be able to find a place on monday without much clouds...

I'd love to go, but I can't afford to.
So pictures and videos will have to do.

But I will tell you pictures and video does not convey the same wonder as seeing it in person.

Partial eclipses are cool, but even at 90% it just feels colder and the sun looks cool through eclipse glasses. A total eclipse is (supposed to be) something else.

I will unfortunately not be experiencing it though.

Someday I will get to experience a total ecplise, this will be my second time seeing a partial. First time was I was about 14.

But I agree a total is somethjng else, almost erie, this from some friends have told me.

@manikyath @Bananasplit_00 Here's the selection of parts and case I'll be using: Given both the 12V bus and backup 12v bus will both be energized when the mosfets connect the two together, I'm hoping there will be little to no current surges. I'll be sure to measure everything on my scope with a dummy load and whatnot before it powers the actual machines

I mean you know the saying... Anyone can build a bridge but only an engineer can barely build a bridge Having a cargo ship crashing into your bridge isn't part of the normal wear a tear a bridge would be expected to sustain, so it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to overbuild in that area The whole thing collapsing like it did doesn't really surprise me, with a critical member removed it's gonna strain everything else, causing a chain reaction of parts breaking

Turns out this ship was made by Hyundai Heavy Industries and this hasn't been the first time it crashed into something.

On 11 July 2016, Dali collided with the berth at the container terminal in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium, causing significant damage to the vessel's stern and transom.[14] The berth was also damaged and closed for cargo handling operations. There were no injuries or water pollution reported.[15] At the time of the incident the ship was owned by Oceanbulk Maritime (a Greek company) and chartered by Maersk.[15]

I guess Hyundai has some explaining to do in case this was a mechanical or electrical failure.

I more think the comapny running it needs to explain why it was put back into service and what checks were missed during inspection

Coming in here to say the main span of the bridge did have protection (see image) from a handful of dolphins, but that's not a whole lot. You'd see the same amount of protection for a *much* smaller bridge, like the FDR bridge in Chicago (see image 2). Massive tragedy, all we can really hope for at this point is DOTs use this as a lesson to install more dolphins around their bridges (who knows if they will tbh).

It is impressed how quick and smooth the communication was. The ship pilot being able to get through to the bridge authority and them closing the road within minutes.

I'm going to be designing and building a high e…

The lead acids will go into an 18-36v to 12v step down converter, and each machine will be equipped with a picoPSU and short thick ass cables The power distribution box will have the electronics inside and have plugs on the back to loop to each machine's 12v input The voltage drop should be minimal, and during normal operation the whole thing will be running from a server PSU with really good efficiency The PWRGOOD and ACOK signals from the server PSU will be logic ANDed together and control the mosfets betwen the 12v output of the DC-DC and the main 12v bus, which the server PSU normally powers (it has no issues being backfed in backup mode) The DC-DC has a small idle current but it's not bad (60mA), the lead acid charger I bought will keep it running and the batteries charged, and once mains drops out, its 12v output will immediately be connected to the 12v bus (hopefully) before the output of the server PSU starts to drop out. Its bulk filter caps should hold on long enough for the backup mosfets to connect to the 12V bus

I'm going to be designing and building a high e…

I'm using free deep cycle lead acids. The current power draw from my entire server rack and accessories is a whole 150w, including inefficiencies in the existing UPS. A couple 40Ah batteries will last ages.
  17. I'm going to be designing and building a high efficency DC backup system for my servers and whatnot. Is this something yall would be interested in seeing? Every device would be running from 12V DC instead of 120V AC, and as a result the efficiency when running on batteries will be way higher. I've got a 96% efficient DC-DC for running the machines on battery, and on mains power it'll run from a single 94% efficient mains power supply instead of having a bunch of different switching power supplies running each device.

As an embedded electronics masters student, 60mA standby current is an offensive amount 😂

I'd be a bit worried about cable lengths and loops because if you end up with a significant inductive component you will get voltage overshoot when switching to battery. Probably nothing to obsess over though, would just be a shame if at the first power outage your severs explode 😅

  19. If yall haven't heard, there's an emulator for the virtual boy on the 3DS called Red Viper. It has working 3D and lets you change what colour it displays in. I like amber.

    PXL_20240310_115549272.thumb.jpg.64c61feb1dfb605f0bb0a37b43266dcf.jpg

Would absolutely suggest trying it. The virtual boy's "screen" is a near identical resolution to the 3DS, so there's no gross scaling artifacts.

As far as I can tell, they've made the depth slider adjust the depth offset rather than the depth intensity, since the virtual boy wasn't designed with a depth intensity slider.

    Give it a try!

i tried it until my eyes hurt, from what i've heard that's very accurate to the virtualboy experience.

great addition to the library on my 3DS though.
