what year is it? when will we stop measuring data capacity in itunes songs? that alone show that who wrote or said that is totally out o the loop and makes me question their know-how.
this ridiculous i remeber when cd's were pretty new thing and labeled with how many minutes o music they could hold.
you know what actually that sound fun. from now on ill only refer to capacity by comparison to other things.

my ssd can hold 45,3 bluray movies and my phone can hold roughly 60000 whatsapp messages
also my car uses 1840 tea spoons of gas per 100 km and my bank account holds about 3,5 macbook pros

What I find more alarming is that people believe that if spend time and money you'll produce something better. That's the philosophical equivalent of thinking the human race is godlike.
In practice the GPU market is mature enough that it's not trivial to find something new which works well. Previously you'd tweak the same arch, put it on a smaller node, you'd get better clocks and more cores which led to better perf. But now everything is complex and there is no obvious solution. What Nvidia seems to do is going bigger on a smaller node, which is kinda the easiest way to squeeze a bit of perf. Everything else will take more than time or money, it'll take someone smart being lucky to find a good idea.

IG-88 reacted to GoodBytes in Converting win32 and .net into UWP
UWP is not a programming language. It is a framework. You can use C++, C#, Visual Basic or JavaScript (with HTML, CSS) to make a software with it.
You can say Win32 is also second-rate, as it lacks a lot of abilities itself, making implementing them a pain, and some things are impossible to provide a consistent experience between programs, as each dev will do its own thing which they think is better or can't do better due lack of resources or focus (example: multi-touch experience.. look how IE works differently than Chrome, which works differently than Skype desktop, and works differently than Firefox... look at page scroll and zooming (beside Skype for zooming, as there is no zoom). Notice how the experience is drastically different). My point is that both frameworks have their ups and downs. It is up to the developer to pick the right tool to do job.

That is like fighting between a nail and a screw. You can use either to build stuff. Both have their strength and weaknesses.

IG-88 reacted to LAwLz in Radeon RX 480 Benchmarks
Those are the exceptions rather than the norm though. Not what you should base the performance on. But not even in those games it manages to match the 970, which is cheaper (at least in Europe).

No... We got quite a few DX12 games right now, and the gap in Ashes is far bigger than in the other games. There have always been games that favors one manufacturer over the other, even in DX11. I am fairly sure some of the Batman games heavily favored Nvidia cards. Just because that Batman game used DX11 doesn't mean all DX11 games favors Nvidia. Do you understand? Can't believe I have to explain this...

It is not 150 dollars cheaper. You can get a GTX 970 for under 300 dollars, and the 8GB model (which was benchmarked here) will not cost 200 USD. It will cost more. So the difference might be ~40 dollars. The R9 390 can also be had for under 300 dollars. It does not perform at 970-390 levels either. It performs worse than those cards.

The problem is that we are getting the same or worse price:performance than we already had. AMD didn't price it at 200 dollars because they wanted to bring better price:performance to the market. They did it because even their own cards from the previous generation is outperforming it at a very similar price.

IG-88 reacted to White Rabbit in MSI and ASUS Send VGA Review Samples With Higher Clocks Than Retail Cards
    http://cdn.videocardz.com/1/2016/06/MSI-GTX-1080-review-vs-retail.jpg
As you can see, the retail card's boost clock is at 1823MHz, whereas the review sample's boost clock is at 1848MHz. At first, it looks obvious that MSI has given a "modified" card to the reviewer. However, if you look at MSI's website, the card is advertised to have a 1847MHz boost clock: https://us.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1080-GAMING-X-8G.html#hero-specification TechpowerUp's card is 1MHz within MSI's own specifications. The card's "OC mode", which enables the higher frequencies, is a feature present on ALL MSI cards, from the 1080 all the way back to the 780: https://us.msi.com/Graphics-card/N780-TF-3GD5OC#hero-specification

MSI and Asus aren't alone in this. As you can see, there is clearly a gaming and OC mode for Gigabyte's 980 Ti G1 and 1080 G1: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5472#sp http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5915#sp

There is nothing "questionable" about these features. The cards are guaranteed to run within the OC mode frequencies, and any one that doesn't is probably defective. If you have an MSI 1080 Gaming X but don't want to use MSI's OC software, feel free to overclock the card manually in order to reach the OC mode clock frequencies. Your card will still run within specifications.

IG-88 reacted to Commander Llama in [Updated] Sony officially confirms 4K ready Playstation - "PS4 Neo"
And people do complain about these things. Sometimes for legit reasons too. Whether your main gaming driver is console or PC, if you live in a rural area with shit Internet, mandatory day zero game updates have been a big problem for years. However, there is a "vast" (for the people in question) gulf of knowledge between researching parts and building a budget gaming PC geared for living room play out of those parts, versus going to most any big box store, buying one box, take it home, plug it in, and it works, irregardless of any setup woes that might exist (because those woes are the same, or more difficult, setting up a new PC).

Basically, people are lazy, and convenience is highly valued. Also, while the gap is shrinking, console hardware is still cheaper than an equivalent PC. You cannot build an mITX/HTPC that will go toe to toe with a PS4 for ~5 years with the same performance, unless you somehow scored a dirt-cheap, recent series GPU and Windows for free. Of course, you can get way, way, way more and cheaper games on PC and you don't pay for network services (PSN), so I think PC wins out hard in the medium/long term. But... People are also short-sighted, on top of lazy. They don't think with that kind of foresight on average.

AKA Nvidia is the maker and founder of the GTX 1080. So, the card that comes straight from Nvidia is called the Founders Edition.
Actually makes a ton of sense.

How is it scummy for Nvidia to charge more for their Founders Edition so that their partners can charge less and make more sales then Nvidia?

IG-88 reacted to Technous285 in Jayztwocents clarifies what the Founders Edition actually is, you might be surprised.
As Jay said - the FE/"Reference" card is priced higher than the MSRP for cards made by ASUS and the like so Nvidia doesn't inadvertently piss said companies off by people buying the Nvidia card as a "cheaper" option unless they're either an early adopter or need the "reference" blower cooler for compact rigs and none of the other guys provide said cooler type. That and it keeps Nvidia from needing to do a lot of production runs of the FE card if it's a high-price/low-sales card through its lifespan.

Yes but the lightning and classified cards will have custom pcb's and coolers potentially allowing higher over clocks.  So even if they are the same price they will be a better card for the money.

Should we stop freedom of speech too? that means terrorists can no longer say what they want... but neither can you

Example, the government make encrypted messages illegal..... that means your messages are no longer secure

What stops the crinimals and terrorists sending encrypted messages through the dark web? nothing, they will break the law anyway

there are 7 billion people on the planet, and very few of them are terrorists, forcing 99% of the population to give up their rights, is something I cannot agree with

Twitter has really shown its "tumblr" idiocy lately. From removing Milo's verification for the sole purpose of punishing him, to using Feminist Frequency as part of their censorship team. It's insane.

What makes this worse are how people, even in here, are so happy to support this censorship. What are you thinking? Free speech is the right to criticize those in power, and to give your two cents about "politics". Political correctness is the exact opposite of free speech, as it taboos things, and tries to get you to self censor. If you don't they will do it for you after all, and bring eternal hell fire on your ass.

We have seen these sjw, or social marxists infest several sites for a while now. From gamer sites, that suddenly went blitz krieg on their own readers, to American universities growing into infantile care bear hug boxes, where ideas and different points of view that differs from the PC marxist approved opinions are unwelcome to the point of harassment and false reporting to the police.

Now a public platform like Twitter is now going Stasi on the people trying to criticize this insanity. Seriously what is going on in the US? And why are people even defending this?

I'm from Denmark, one of the only countries in the world who have actually had to defend free speech in the last decade, with embassy burnings and terror attack on a free speech talk not 5 minutes away from where I live last year.

It sickens me that are supporting this regression in society. Being offended doesn't give anyone special rights. It just means they are weak and bigoted to other peoples opinions and views. Grow up and stop acting like small children.

How about you stop trying to tell Intel how to make CPUs. Theres very good reasons why they don't allow every CPU to be OCed and despite what the tinfoil hat brigade thinks, its mostly about consumer protection. They don't want consumers overclocking products which are not suitable for overclocking and killing them off then taking to the internet to declare Intel CPUs to be bad and dying all the time.

IG-88 reacted to MarcoR in Error 53 bricks iPhone 6 after updating to iOS9 if it has been repaired by a 3rd Party
Noticed a lot of misinformation around this, here and elsewhere...

TouchID is a hardware element. Not software, your fingerprint reader and it's hardware are coupled with the phone during manufacturing. The minute you turn the iPhone on and it gets flashed the first time, the two are irreversibly ties together.

Its why Apple didn't repair their iPhones up until a year ago. You walked into a store with a broken home button? You got a new phone. Replacing the home button on your own would permanently violate the hardware security and render TouchID (and Apple Pay) null. It was always a security thing, nothing more.

It it seems that in the past year, Apple changes that policy and is capable of repairing your TouchID sensor to the hardware, like from factory, though how often they do this is unknown as for Apple it's really that much easier to just replace a customer device either under warranty OR for the core charge on a device swap.

Killing 3rd party repairs? Come on guys. Apple has several authorized repair centres, plenty of places that aren't from Apple themselves. They don't stop these guys. They simply provide a VALID way, using OEM parts.

Actual 3rd parties who aren't authorized are a mixed bag. Who knows what they're doing, in hardware or software. Apple isn't "bricking" phones out of spite. TouchID is a security feature first, and since a lot of iOS 9 features can work off TouchID it's not like they're being vindictive or unfair in wanting people to have valid hardware in place.
