I've done a lot of research lately and I've seen that the HD598/558 seems pretty good for gaming. I also watch hundreds of movies and listen to music too. So I might just be getting the headphones and a clipon mic.

No need for silly 5.1 or 7.1 in headsets. As long as the game has the audio set to "headphone" or "headset", you should be able to get very good positional audio. I've tried using the virtual surround on my sound card, but it only sounded worse, and made no difference in "surround".

and yes, the PC360's are basically the only good headset if you're looking for good audio. They're basically the same as Sennheiser HD558, just with a sort of expensive mic on it. I've been using my pair for 6 months or something, very nice.

Well in that case, if OP's in the situation of having bad onboard audio, is on a tight budget, and can't find the fiio at a reasonable price, it'd be worth looking into getting a DX from a store with a good return policy.
+1 pro point to you for thinking about prices.

Quick piece of info: The Fiio E10 is literally over double the price in Norway compared to Newegg US. if it weren't for me not wanting external things (no external harddrives for example) and me already having the D2X, I would've gotten the E10, but hey, the cheapest here is 948 NOK, whereas the D2X is 1052 NOK or something. as for the E10, when I just googled however many USD it was, in NOK it was 430.

There's literally no other good headset - audio-technica and Beyerdynamic's implementations are too expensive, and other gaming headsets are cheap trash at marked up prices.

    Yeah, I do

me too. Screens are in signature. I use my main, the IPS monitor (asus) for games and movies, also most used for web browsing and the TN one (BenQ) for.. other things. Usually just some Youtube video while browsing on the main monitor. sometimes movies on the side of the game, sometimes my music player, it depends really. Sometimes I have a movie on my main monitor and some chatting or browsing on the other.

anyway: if you're alright with "slower" IPS panels, I'd just get another IPS panel. I get sort of annoyed some times, when I see difference in colors when moving windows from one to the other.

well, I have an old Fisher EQ lying around, which I use for my crappy speakers, so I can just adjust the small things I want extra. For my headset, I use a tiny bit of software EQ (TINY as in usually only 1 dB on two lower bands, just for a little more bass)

EDIT: it's a Fisher EQ 273, just so you know

NIce, I have a very similar Sansui model I use for my monitors at home.  Outside that usually I use 1/3rd octave rack mounted pro gear for calibrating P.A's or even just the built in eq's in mixer amps.

    This.

The rule of thumb is to avoid any brand that specializes in gaming which rules out both Astro and Steelseries (the Siberia V2 sounded horrible to my ears tbh).

For the price of the a40/Siberia elite you can get the WAY better sounding Sennheiser PC360. The soundstage on the PC360's (and the HD500-series) have excellent wide soundstage which greatly benefits depth and accuracy in positioning. No kidding, just regular "2.0" audio without any software of modifications on my HD 598's gives BETTER positional audio than every single headset I've tested that has 7.1 and all that marketing junk.

So then since have not tested something in the range/quality of the HD558's you are fairly biased because it seems the Astro's are the highest quality headphones you've been using. Sure they might be great and "top dog for gaming" but honestly that says very little to me.

Who said you have to be an audio enthusiast to hear the difference? I've already explained above how a pair of headphones/headsets made to have good actual sound quality as opposed to just milking gamers for money sound much clearer with more detail and have better positional audio. Where I live the HD558's are cheaper than the a40's, so the argument is imo rather that gaming- branded products are overpriced due to, well, that they are branded for being good for gaming and not actual sound quality.

If you want a microphone, just get any cheap and simple clip-on mic or get the PC360. The PC360's are essentially HD558's with build in mic, although they are somewhat less comfortable in my experience.

Wireless? Okay, they win on that but, honestly,  I don't like wireless too much as it's prone to interference and can cause some unlikeable distortions. The way I have my desk set up, cables are a non-issue and the 558's come with a detachable cable that is kinda ridiculously long (not a problem though if you know how to do basic cable management). I can easily carry my headphones from edge to edge in my room without having problem with the cable being too short (or getting in the way)

Lower case is held in using rivets. You can remove them, but haven't tried it myself (built four computers with that case, great for the price).

EDIT: yes, you need to use something like a drill to remove them. I don't know much about that though.

Lauen got a reaction from hiyayhi in Progression of my build, from HP crap to Define R4
I figured I could share my PC now that I'm starting to get satisfied. [TL;DR: scroll down if you don't want to hear about the progress]

To start off: I got an HP desktop from my dad, about two years ago. It was an HP *something I forgot* B, which contained the following components: some bad HP OEM board, socket AM3, with an AMD Athlon II x4, 4 GB 1333 Mhz, which actually ran at 7-7-7-20, was kinda cool, an AMD 5450 card, with an entire 1 GB of GDDR3 memory! it also had a BAD 350w psu, wasn't even 80+ sertified.. and a WD Blue 640GB drive, inside some mATX HP case.

three weeks later, I got a new motherboard, an ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3, and I got an XFX Radeon HD 6870, with the horrible single fan cooler. That thing was so loud, and so bad at cooling... I also got a new PSU then, a Cooler Master GX650W, it's an alright PSU.

Then a couple of months passed, and I needed a new cooler for my cpu. so I bought a Cooler Master Hyper TX3, and it barely fit in my case. that HP case was SO small! A few weeks later, I bought a sound card, an ASUS Xonar DX, as the integrated VIA HD audio was absolutely dreadful. Then a couple of months passed again, and I bought myself a new case, the Fractal Design Define R4. it was just a few months after it had launched. When I moved my system over into the R4, I was so amazed at the quality of the case, seeing as I had used a cheap HP case for quite some time. Then a couple of weeks passed, and I bought a new soundcard, as the DX had some issues with the mic when I was in games, the mic would have some weird interference. I have a post on that, so if you wanna know, just ask. Then I bought myself some new harddrives,2 Seagate Barracuda 2TB drives, really nice drives.

So then a month or so passed, and I bought a new motherboard, the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, and SSD, the Samsung 830 256GB, and some new RAM, a kit of 8 GB, Crucial BallistiX Elite, 1600 MHz. The Sabertooth boards are definately my favorite line of boards.

A month or so later, I bought an ASUS GTX660Ti DCU2 and two new fans, to complete the setup of two fans in front, and one fan in the back. A couple of months passed, and I replaced my Logitech G105 with a Steelseries 7G, love me some MX Black switches! Eventually I replaced my MX518 The Dark Knight Edition with a Steelseries Sensei Pro, and replaced my Steelseries Siberia v2 with a Sennheiser PC360. After a while, I got another screen, as my BenQ G2420HD was getting a bit old, and had a giant scratch in the panel. So I got me an ASUS VN248H, a cheap IPS screen, looks alright, but I wish I’d spent a little more.

And yesterday, I replaced my Athlon II x4 with an FX-8320, replaced the Hyper TX3 with a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2, and replaced the Crucial BallistiX Elite with Corsair Vengeance LP, white 8 GB kit

Pics are here, in my Skydrive: http://sdrv.ms/H365pD nevermind the old screen next to the computer, my little brother uses it when he's here.

EDIT: btw, gonna be replacing PSU next month, I think. Going for Cooler Master V850
